Trinidad and Tobago versus USA

November 24th, 1996


Trinidad and Tobago are out of contention for the final round of Concacaf Qualifying. This was made possible when the Calypso boys dropped there third game 0-1 at home. Playing before 8,000 fans at Hasley Crawford Stadium, the home team came out and played with all heart. They played with more determination this time than there last game. The technical staff made several changes due to only four foriegh based professionals that were available for the game. Missing from the squad was captain Russell Latapy who was unable to play because of club commitments. From all accounts the game with local players was played much better. Ball control and passing was much better than the last game. The first scoring chance fell to Hutson Charles in the 26th minute when stand in Captain sent him a through ball. However, Kelly Kesler smothered the ball at his feet. In the 34th minute, Ancil Elcock fouled Ernie Stewart outside the penalty box. While the T&T players were protesting, Joe Marx-Moore chipped the ball over Micheal Maurice to put the Americans up for good. In the second half the home team came out with more purpose. In the 61th minute Under 23 Striker Stern John, recieved a ball from Yorke, whose shot rebounded off a defender with the goal keeper well beaten. In the 63rd, a 25 yard strike from Yorke was pused away by the goalee.In the 65th minute American defender Eddie Pope cleared away a dangerous ball from David Nahkid. In the 73rd minute Dwight Yorke's strike from a free kick hit Cobi Jones in the face. With the lost T&T drops to last place with one point. The team faces Guatemala next on December 8th in Los Angeles.
