Tack on an extra £ 1million for Latas
Latapy...moving up in price.
(Photo: Trinidad Express)
Talk about moving up in value. Former national captain Russell Latapy
has moved up in value according to the Trinidad Guardian. In
order for any club to have him on there team they must shell out £7,000.000
for a transfer from his current club Boavista. Several European clubs have
come knocking on the door of Russell. According to the report, Arsenal
and Leeds United in England have shown interest in him. Last month Russell
Latapy was in England to discuss a possible move to Leeds. In addition
to English clubs, Nantes and Monoco in France and Benfica in Portugal have
expressed interest. Two Brazilian clubs have also shown interest in him
as well. Palmeiras is rumoured to be one of the clubs. Last season Aston
Villa tried to acquire Russell for £6,000,000. However, Boavista
turned down the deal and decided to keep him for one more year. Despite
the price for Latapy he is still number two in value behind Dwight Yorke.
Yorke's value is rated at £10,000,000.
The goals come flying in...
With the USISL season in it's third week the goals have started to pour
in. The Jackson Chargers, which is in the Premeir League in the US, is
populated mainly with Trinidad and Tobago players. The Premeir league's
vision is to allow college players a chance to play semi-pro football while
still keeping there status as students and thus being eligiable for the
MLS and A-League draft. The Charger's have under 23 goalie David Austin,
Jerremy Shortt, Rigobelto Cedeno, Cecil Hinds and Carlos McGregor at there
disposal. Despite a 3-1 opening lost they bounced back to 8-0 and 5-0 wins.
In the 8-0 thrashing of Shereport, Jeremy Shortt scored the first hat-trick
of the league this season prompting the league to name him player of the
week. Sheldon Bennet scored two goals. The game most was a one sided
affair, prompting the owner to ask: "I really pay these guys to play?"
(Special thanks to David Austin)
In the strating lineup...
Stern John and Ansil Elcock and the Columbus Crew go into action tonight
versus Tampa Bay. You can hear all the action by going to The
MLS Brodcast Network at 7:30pm. David Nahkid is probable for New
England's game in San Jose, Evans Wise is expected to start.
Over in England, Dwight Yorke and Aston Villa will be looking to get
there UEFA cup hopes back on track when they play Sheffield Wednesday.
Clint Marcelle and Barnsley are just playing out there season and this
may be the weekend when they get officially relegated. They face Leicester
City on the road.
Over in Scotland, Anthony Rougier and Hibernian face Dundee United.
Marvin Andrews is probable with an abdominal strain. Raith take on Airdire.
In Portugal, Russell Latapy and Boavista face E.Amadora in a attempt to
gain a UEFA cup place next year. Leonson Lewis and Chaves face Campomaiorense
at home.

Nahkid angery at TTFA
Nahkid...angery
David Nahkid is angry at not being called up for T&T's game with
Saudi Arabia. Speaking to the Independent last week Nahkid said:
"Nobody ever told me about this match, they did not even have the courtesy
to ask me if I was available or not." Nahkid has been captain of Trinidad
and Tobago since he took over from Russell Latapy 18 months ago. T&T
is due to play Saudi Arabia on May 9th in Nice, France. Also not in the
squad is Russell Latapy.
John scores again
John...scores again
After coming off a great performance last week you would have to excuse
Stern John this week. Once again he found the back of the net. John scored
his fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute. He ripped a low shot
past the DC United goalkeeper to put Columbus up until an 89th minute goal
by Ethervery level the game. The two teams preceded to shot outs in which
DC emerged victorious. It was only the second lost for the Crew this season.
They still remain in first place in the MLS East division.
Other MLS news...
David Nahkid was out of New England's game with Miami with a ankle injury.
Evans Wise came on in the 68th minute. New England won the game 3-0 for
there second win of the season. Over in Dallas, Brian Haynes came on in
the 61st minute in the Burn's game with Kansas City. The Burn on the game
3-1 on the strenght of three second half goals.
Yorke and Villa loose ground on UEFA race
Yorke...loosing ground.
Dwight Yorke's ability to play in the UEFA cup next year suffered a
big setback on Saturday. They lost to relegation favorites Bolton Wanderers
3-1. That lost droped Villa to eighth place and practically out of UEFA
cup contention. They need to get into the top five positions for a chance.
Marcelle gets the offers.
Marcelle...shifting through offers.
In other English action, it is one more and counting for Clint Marcelle.
Barnsley lost to Arsenal 2-0 to push them closer to relegation. However,
that is not really a concern for Marcelle. The Trinidad Express
report last week that several clubs from Europe have come knocking on Clint's
door including two Dutch clubs. In February Marcelle told TTFOL that
he had recieved offers from French clubs. However, he expressed a disire
to remain in England for family reasons. He would like to stay in the English
Premeirship. Marcelle's current contract is up at season's end.
In the shooting range...
Anthony Rougier and Hibernian still continue to hang on for their Scottish
Premiership lives on Saturday. They tied league leaders Celtic 0-0. Over
in Portugal, Leonson Lewis and Chaves continue to fight for there first
division lives. They won there game versus Leca 1-0. The win gave them
28 points from 31 games. They are currently just three points away from
remaining in the first division.

T&T crack top fifty.
T&T into the top fifty.
Trinidad and Tobago has broken into the top fifty in the latest Fifa
rankings. They are currently ranked 49th in the World between Cameroon
(48th) and Costa Rica (50th). They moved up two places since the ranking
last month. T&T are still benefiting from the Gold Cup and some shaking
up in the higher teams. Trinidad and Tobago is ranked fourth in Concacaf
behind Mexico (4th), the United States (15th) and Jamaica (31st)
all World Cup qualifiers.
T&T to play Saudi Arabia
Trinidad and Tobago will be play World Cup qualifier's Saudi Arabia in
a international friendly. That was the announcement made by the TTFA earlier
this week. They will play the Middle East's top team on May 8th in Nice.
Several European professionals have been called up to the national squad.
They include, Dwight Yorke (Aston Villa), Clint Marcelle (Barnsley), Tony
Rougier (Hibernian), Marvin Andrews (Raith Rovers), Jerren Nixon (FC Zurich)
and Clayton Ince (Wrexham). Two US based players will be included. Stern
John and Ansil Elcock from the Columbus Crew will be in the lineup. The
rest of the players will be from the SPFL.
After the friendly, the team will go to St. Kitts and Nevis for the
Bolton Wanderers tournament. None of the European players will not be included
in the squad and will be replaced with a local contingent. Only Gary Glasgow
from the New Orleans Storm will be in the lineup during the tournament.
The friendly with Saudi Arabia will give a good look at the future T&T
team. Bertile St. Clair wants to give as much international exposure to
young players and incorporate them with the European players.
In the starting lineup...
Dwight Yorke and Aston Villa continue there quest for a UEFA cup place
this weekend when they face relegation bound Bolton Wanderers. Clint Marcelle
and Barnsley will try to revive any hopes of playing in the Premier league
next season when they face league leaders Arsenal. If Barnsley looses they
will be done for good. You can hear all the English action by going to
the Stadium
at 9:30am on Saturday morning. Over in Scotland, Tony Rougier and Hibernian
face Celtic in there "do or die" weekend to stay up in the Scottish top
flight. Marvin Andrews and Raith Rovers face Stirling Albion. Over in Portugal,
Leonson Lewis is looking to add to his goal scoring total when Chaves faces
Leca. Russell Latapy faces his old team in FC Porto.
Across the Atlantic, Stern John is coming off his three goal performance
last weekend. John and his cousin Elcock travel to Washington, D.C to take
on MLS champs DC United in MLS action. Viewers in the US can see the game
on any Univision station in your local area at 3pm EST. You can see
the game live here on the internet. This is a first for
TTFOL. KMEX in Los Angeles will be carrying the game on their network
and streaming it live over the internet. The game will be in Spanish, so
it may be difficult for those of you like me who flunked out of Form Three
Spanish to follow along. However, as my friend Gary says, football is football
in any language. Also it may be choppy and prone to breakdowns, it depends
on your system and how busy the net is at that time. After all that you
can go to Stadium
at 3pm EST on Sunday. I have also included the Telemundo television
station for more coverage later on in the year.
In other MLS action, David Nahkid and Evans Wise will be looking for
more points when they face Miami. Finally, Brian Haynes and Mickey Trotman
will be looking for more playing time when Dallas face Kansas City.

I am back!! Thank you to all that have sent there e-mails wishing me
back to health. I have found myself more doped up than Dole Chadee and
Ike Turner put together trying to get over this cold. This weekend we start
on this side of the Atlantic.
T&T loose to Mexican club
Captain Sherwyn Jullien in action versus Guadalajara.
(Photo: Trinidad Express)
A youthful Trinidad and Tobago fell to Mexican club champions Guadalajara
on Friday night 0-1. Bertile St. Clair called up 19 players of which 14
had no international experience. Trinidad and Tobago dominated the game
but fell to a 81st minute goal keeper blunder.
After throwing away two good chances, the Mexicans swooped down via
a counter attack. Ignacio Vázquez received a long past from another
team mate and headed straight towards the goal. However, Micheal McComie
immediately came off his line to challenge the striker who chipped the
ball over his head into an open net.
T&T for there part should have won the game by a healthy margin.
In the 77th minute Anton Brown fired a shot just inches over the crossbar
after some bad defensive work by the Mexican defenders. Irasta Knights
fired a left footed shot that was wide of the mark in the 73rd minute.
St. Clair's inclusion of 14 uncapped players including several under
23 players is in keeping with his philosophy of rebuilding. This year is
going to be a very good year for St. Clair in evaluating young talent.
He has the CAC Under 21 tournament in a couple of months. He also has the
Under 20 qualifying tournament later this year. It is St. Clair's wish
to merge the existing professionals together with the skillful young players
into a force to reckon with.
Buck Eye State scoring
Someone is planing to call the Ohio State troopers on five T&T citizens
after this weekend. The performance of Stern John and Ansil Elcock in Columbus
and Gary Glasgow, Lester Felician and Glenn Benjamin in Cincinnati is probably
the best performance by a group of T&T players in recent memory.
John...finding his scoring touch
(Photo: MLSNET)
In Columbus, Stern John broke out of his scoring slump in a big way. He
pumped in a hatrick on Saturday night for Columbus versus Miami. Columbus
beat Miami 5-1 to maintain there lead in the MLS East. John scored the
first goal in the 48th minute on a corner kick from cousin and fellow T&T
international Ansil Elcock. John headed the ball towards the net only to
have it slapped away. John is not known for his paitence to let a ball
past by and promptly banged home the rebound. The second goal came on from
a team mate who threaded the ball nicely through two defenders to John
who knocked it past the Miami goal keeper. John completed his hatrick when
a Miami defender attempted to clear a ball out of the area. His shot hit
John's leg and bounced to US national Thomas Doley who promptly laid
it back to John who put it away. John's performance made him the MLS Player
of the week. Elcock also had a good game by providing three scoring assist.
(Multimedia: Stern
John's three goals {1.7 Megabyte, should take 12 minutes on 28.8 modem}
Ansil
Elcock's after game comments in Real Audio)
"Down de road" from Columbus in Cincinnati they were talking about another
T&T trio. Gary Glasgow scored two goals and Lester Felician another
in New Orlean's 3-1 win over the Riverhawks in A-League action. Glasgow
scored in the 13th minute when he received a past from fellow T&T national
Glenn Benjamin and dribbled past the defenders to put in a hook shot past
the goalie. Glasgow found himself unmarked and on a receiving past from
a team mate. He buried the shot past the goalie for his second goal of
the game. Less than one minute later Lester Felcian scored on a Glenn Benjamin
assist. New Orleans improve to 2-1 on the season.
New England gathers first point.
Nahkid in action on Saturday.
(Photo: AP)
David Nahkid and Evans Wise both had good games on Saturday when the New
England Revolution faced MLS champs DC United. Nahkid showed why
he is one of the best players in T&T. Nahkid's main job was the marking
of Bolivian international Marco Etheverry. He did an effective job not
only marking the Bolivian but in making crisp passes to other teammate's
for scoring chances. A friend of mine told me in December that while training
with the national team he could see why Nahkid is such a good player. Nahkid
he said, will never be a Maradona, but he will provide you with the
perfect past time and time again exactly in the spot you need it.
Sadly for Nahkid he suffered a knock near the end of the first half
and was subbed early in the second half. That left New England without
there main midfield threat. The slack was picked up by Evans Wise.
However, Wise is no Nahkid. Despite making good runs on the wings, his
final crosses into the penalty area were usually ineffective. He did provide
a cross in the first half deep into the penalty box that eventually provided
New England with the game tying score. Wise used most of his speed to get
past DC defenders but his final touch just lacked what was required to
make a true difference. It was like watching Machel Montano and Xtatic
on t.v with the volume off, lots of excitement but nothing to move you.
New England won the game 2-1 on a shoot out after remaining tied 1-1 at
the end of regulation time. That gave New England there first points of
the season.
Yorke puts away another.
Yorke...coming in bunches
Dwight Yorke continued his good run of form of late for Aston Villa.
He scored his 14th goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Southampton. Yorke's
goal came from a cross from Ian Wright and knocked home the go ahead goal
for Villa. Yorke had a chance to add to his total less than one minute
later when he struck the up right. Yorke put away another near the end
of the game but was judged to have fouled the goal keeper first. The win
for Villa keeps them in eighth spot with 51 points, just outside of a European
place.
Marcelle and Barnsley done.
Stick a fork in Barnsley they are done. It seems more than likely that
they will be playing in the English First division next season. They tied
Tottenham 1-1 with Clint Marcelle coming on in the 88th minute. With three
games left versus league leaders Arsenal on Saturday and Lecester City
and Manchester United in the following weeks the idea of playing in the
Premiership next season is fastly becoming an illusion. As for Marcelle,
those French clubs may be looking really good right now.
Lewis finally finds the net.
Lewis...second of the season.
While the focus in Portugal has been on Russell Latapy, Leonson Lewis stole
the limelight on Sunday. He opened the scoring in the 67th minute for Chaves
in there game with E. Amadora. Chaves won there game 2-0, but they still
remain in a position to be relegated at the end of the season. Russell
Latapy came on in the final minute with Boavista's game with Varim. They
won the encounter 2-0 to keep them in the hunt for a European place next
year.
In the shooting range....
A last minute goal saved Tony Rougier and Hibernian from relegation for
another week. They tied Dufermline 1-1 with Rougier once again causing
problems....Jerren Nixon and FC Zurich kept pace with a European place
when they defeated Aarau 2-1. Finally, Alvin Corneal and the Raleigh Flyers
lost there second game of the season when they went down in a 2-1 shoot
out to Richmond in A-legue action.
Monday 13th, 1998
Sorry for the late posting today. I have been battling the flu all
day.
Yorke brings Villa closer to European glory.
Yorke...two goals again.
Dwight Yorke continued his scoring ways by putting two goals past
Conventry in a 2-1 win on Saturday. The win, Villa's sixth in seven games,
bolstered there chances of gaining a UEFA cup place next year. Yorke's
first goal came when he was left unmarked and headed home his 12th goal
of the season. His second was scored when he picked up a rebound from his
strike partner Joachim and buried a bicycle kick past the Conventry goalkeeper.
The win gives Villa 48 points and moves them up to eighth in the English
Premeirship table.
Marcelle watches as Barnsley progress
Clint Marcelle had to sit and watch on Saturday as Barnsley finally won
a game in a bid to escape relegation. They defeated Sheffield Wednesday
2-1 to move within two points of staying up in the English Premier League
next season. It is slim chance that Marcelle will be back at the
Yorkshire based club next season. Marcelle has attracted the interest of
two French clubs but is more eager to stay in England next year. (Late
flash: Barnsley has lost to Newcastle United on Monday afternoon).
Rougier and Hibernian get big win
Tony Rougier and Hibernian were cheered off the pitch on Saturday after
wining the Edinbourough derby versus Hearts 2-1. Rougier found himself
a marked man but that tactic allowed extra space for other Hibs players
to run at the Hearts defense. The win did two things. First it eliminated
there cross town rivals from winning the Scottish Premier division. More
importantly it moved Hibernian within six points of staying up in the league
next season.
Across the channel...
Boavista could have used Russell Latapy in there starting lineup versus
Maritimo on Sunday. They lost to the islanders 1-0 and sliped, for the
time being, out of a UEFA cup place next season. Going into the game they
were fourth in the league. After the lost, they tumbled down to seventh.
However, with just three points and a few loses at the top will bring them
back into the thick of things.
Leonson Lewis started for Chaves in there encouter with league leaders
FC Porto. However, they fell 3-1 to remain second to last in the Portuguise
First division.
Second Trini civil war breaks out in MLS.
What happens when you start four T&T players at the same time in a
MLS game? You get a civil war and a exciting game. Ansil Elcock and Stern
John both with Columbus faced off with Evans Wise and David Nahkid of New
England. Columbus emerged 3-2 winners to move into top place in the East.
The lost leaves New England winless in the young MLS season.
New Orleans find new T&T pair.
It was a double blow for New Orleans when they lost both Stern John and
Mickey Trotman to MLS teams this season. In the search to discover a new
strike partnership they once again dipped into the best source of talent
in Concacaf. They drafted Lester Felician from the development leagues
in the USISL and brought in Gary Glasgow from local club Defense Force.
They got there money's worth last week when Glasgow scored two goals and
Felician one in a 4-1 win over Alburqurque. That was there second game
of the A-league season, having lost 1-0 two days earlier.
In the shooting range...
Alvin Corneal has his first win under his belt in the A-league. The Raliegh
Flyers deafted the Charleston Battery 1-0 in there season opener...It is
a lucky thing that Shaka Hislop will be leaving Newcastle United at season's
end. Newcastle has gone from good to bad to really ugly in the past few
weeks and is in danger of being relegated at season's end.
Thursday 9th, 1998
It has been a very quiet week for Trinidad and Tobago football.
Portuguise deal with Rangers slips.
A few months ago TTFOL reported that a deal between Rangers in the
SPFL and Portuguise agent Toze Francisco was in the works. The deal was
one that would have Rangers link with top Portuguise clubs in Benfica
and Porto. That would have allowed T&T players to use those clubs facilities
for training and would have allowed the clubs to swap players.
However, according to a Trinidad Express report on Monday, the
deal has fallen on the rocks. Francisco has returned to Portugal and may
be working towards other deals with other clubs. According to Rangers manager
Richard Fakoory "The original arrangement was that he (Francisco) would
be a part financier of the club. But he wanted more than that. He wanted
to have complete autonomy for the club and I couldn't give him that...He
may also be talking to other clubs but I can do nothing about that. Right
now I can only hope that when he returns we will be able to come to a settlement,
if not I will have to do it with my own resources."
While the arrangement seems like it is on the the death bed, all is
not lost. The deal is one of the most forward thinking steps for T&T
football. The poitential benefits for the game in Trinidad and Tobago would
have been tremendous. It would have meant that Rangers top players would
have gain the experience of playing in Europe with some powerful European
teams. The other clubs in the SPFL should take a page from this idea and
link with clubs outside T&T. Not as a matter of survival but as a way
to expand and improve the game in the country. A team link with smaller
teams in South America and Europe would only help the game. Lets be honest
you are not going to see a link between Joe Public with Juventus. However,
maybe Joe Public or Caledonia with Vincenza in Italy or Deportiva La Corunia
in Spain will look good. Just something to think about.
When UEFA comes knocking
Playing in European competition is always something that every club players
dreams about. It may be sub zero wheather in Sweden or in front of
100,000 fans at the Newcamp in Barcelona playing in Europe is something
special. For three T&T players European competition may soon be a reality.
Dwight Yorke is no stranger to European competiton. He and his Aston Villa
team mate have been challeged to reach the UEFA cup next year. They have
submitted a bid to compete in a new tournament called the Intertoto Cup.
The tournament provides three teams in the first round of next year's UEFA
cup. Eventhough Villa submitted the application after the January
deadline the tournament organizers will resolve the issue on the 24th of
April. Failing that Villa will have to reach the top five positions. The
currently sit in ninth place.
Eventhough Russell Latapy looks almost certain to leave Boavista at
seasons end, in the event that he should be staying at the Portuguise club
he will have a good chance of playing in Europe. Latapy has been no stranger
to European competition. Playing in Champions League with FC Porto and
both Cup Winners Cup and UEFA cup competition with Boavista has taken him
from Italy to the Ukraine. This year Boavista are in the hunt for a UEFA
cup place. They are currently in third and must maintain that place in
order to play in Europe.
Strange but through, Jerren Nixon and FC Zurich are looking good for
a European place. Every year it seems that FC Zurich's main aim is to reach
the championship zone and play out the rest of the season. However, this
year has been different. They have found themselves among the top teams
in Switzerland. Following a 3-2 win over FC Aarau on Wednesday night, the
club has moved up within the top three and just four points behind the
second place team.
In the Starting lineup...
Dwight Yorke and Aston Villa continue there assualt on a European place
when they face Conventry on the road. This may be do or die for Clint Marcelle
and Barnsley to stay up in the English Premeir League. They face Sheffield
Wednesday at home. You can hear all the Englsih action by going to The
Stadium at 9:30am on Saturday. Tony Rougier and Hibernian will
be playing in the Edinborough derby with Scottish FA Cup finalist Hearts.
Marvin Andrews is expected to be in the Raith Rovers lineup following a
one game suspension last weekend. Raith Rovers face Dundee. Over in Portugal,
Russell Latapy and Boavista continue there march on a UEFA cup place when
they travel to Maritimo. Leonson Lewis and Chaves take on FC Porto.
Across the Atlantic in the United States, Brian Haynes, Mickey Trotman
and the Dallas Burn take on the Tampa Bay Mutiny. A Trini civil war breaks
out for the second time this season. David Nahkid, Evans Wise and New England
play Ansil Elcock, Stern John and Columbus in MLS play.
Monday 5th, 1998
Yorke and Villa answer challenge
Talk about rising to a challenge. Last week Aston Villa manager John Gregory
stated that he wanted Villa to play in Europe next year. That means that
Villa has to win all there remaining games in order to reach that target.
The Villa team responded by beating West Ham 2-0. Yorke had a good game
with his first shot lifting over the crossbar and the other being tipped
over. With the win Villa have 45 points and currently sit in ninth position.
Relegation beckons for Marcelle
To many Star Trek fans self destruction is the last resort when all other
options have been exhausted. However, in the English Premier League self
destruction is what will lead you back to the First division. That is something
Barnsley is facing right now as a own goal ten minutes from time proved
to be deadly for the Yorkshire club. The goal helped regional rivals Leeds
United to a 2-1 win. Clint Marcelle came into the game in the 79th minute.
The lost drops Barnsley to second to last in the table with 31 points.
However, things are tight near the bottom with just three points keeping
them from a place next season in the English top flight.
European place calls for Latapy
Boavista's rise up the table in the Portuguese first division has been
astounding. A few weeks back they were just an average team. However, they
are quickly becoming Portugal's hottest team. They defeated Salgueiros
3-0. Latapy came on in the final 25 minutes of the game. The win still
leaves them in fourth place tied with Victoria Guimaraes on 46 points.
In the shooting range....
Leonson Lewis started for Chaves for the first time in a few weeks. Chaves
defeated Varim 2-1. Jerren Nixon and FC Zurich continued there assault
on a European place when they tied Servette 1-1 on Sunday.
Across the Atlantic...
Stern John, Ansil Elcock and the Columbus Crew completed a minor upset
when they defeated MLS champs DC United at home 2-1. Both John and Elcock
started for the Crew. You can hear there post game comments from Sportsnet
Ohio in real audio. (It is a little bit choppy but you have to be
patient with the internet). Stern
John & Ansil
Elcock.
Brian Haynes and the Dallas Burn won there third game in a row by beating
San Jose 3-2 in a shoot out. Haynes came on in the 75th minute in a 2-1
Dallas game. However, a San Jose goal seven minutes from time forced extra
time and then a shoot out to determine the winner.
Both David Nahkid and Evans Wise started for New England in there game
with Miami. However, they lost 2-1 to remain winless in just there second
game of the MLS season.
Finally a little house keeping. I have included two new pieces of video
of Dwight Yorke's two goal performance last week. Scroll down to March
30th news segment for the video.

After a day of pranks we get down to the serious business of football.
T&T looking for a few good young men
Trinidad and Tobago is looking for a few good men. Not to join the US Marine
Corps but to help them prepare for the CAC games. T&T are looking for
players born after January 1977. In order to prepare for the tournament
T&T will be holding camps in either North Carolina or New York for
US college players. The dates are yet to be determined but head coach Bertile
St.Clair says that it will be held soon. TTFOL is asking for your
help. If you know of any players born after January 1977 contact me ASAP
via e-mail or on the forum.
Rougier and Marcelle suffer setbacks.
Marcelle and Rougier suffer big set backs
Two of Trinidad and Tobago's premier players suffered major midweek setbacks.
Clint Marcelle and Barnsley suffered a 2-1 lost to Blackburn Rovers
on Tuesday. The lost keeps them in the bottom three of the English top
flight with just two point separating them from staying up next year.
In Scotland, despite the menace of Tony Rougier Hibernian still went
down to Glasgow Rangers 3-0. Rougier seemed to be the only threat for the
Easter Road boys. Just three minutes before the end of the first half he
blew past a Rangers defender who just managed to grad a piece of his shirt
and pull him down. He then found himself body checked by another Rangers
defender. That seemed to be the only action that Hibs would see on the
night. They still remain last in the Scottish Premiership.
T&T players sure up A-League places.
This year will mark a busy year for Trinidad and Tobago players in the
US second division or A-League. Lester Felician and Gary Glasgow looks
almost certain to get the two spots left by Stern John and Mickey Trotman
at the New Orleans Storm. Playing against the Jackson Chargers in a pre
season game Glasgow scored in the second half after a assist from Lester
Felician who came on in the second half. The Jackson Chargers is another
team that has allot of T&T players. Jerremy Shortt, Cecile Hinds, Rigobelto
Cedeno, Carlos McGregor and David Austin all play for the Chargers. They
are also members of Belhaven College.
Craig Demmin who used to play for the Chargers has moved to Rochester
a very big football town in upstate New York. His younger brother Dwayne
Demmin has recently returned from a trial in Malaysia and may soon
resurface in the A-league. In addition, Marvin Raeburn and Avery John will
be playing in the A-league this year with the Raleigh Flyers coached by
Alvin Corneal. However, the news is not so good for Alvin Boisson and Peter
Lewis. According to Charleston management the two have been released.
In the shooting zone....
Dwight Yorke now has a new challenge since reaching the safety zone. Aston
Villa manager John Gregory has told the club that he wants to play in Europe
next year. That leaves Villa with a tall order since they will have to
win there remaining six games in order to reach the top six in order to
gain a UEFA Cup place. T&T national, Hannibal Najjar has left his postion
of head coach of Belhaven College where he recruited some of T&T best
Under 23 players to start a new program at Bethel College in Tennesse.
In the starting lineup...
Dwight Yorke and Aston Villa with there eyes set on Europe next year will
play West Ham at home. Clint Marcelle and Barnsley will be looking to bounce
back from a tough lost earlier this week when they face Leeds United. You
can hear all the action by going to the Stadium
at 9:30 am on Saturday morning. Over in Scotland, Tony Rougier and Marvin
Andrews have this weekend off. In Portugal, Russell Latapy and Boavista
face Salgueiros. In Switzerland, Jerren Nixon and F.C Zurich face Servette.

SPFL gets off to a good start.
The Semi-Professional Football League has started. I have made a couple
of changes to deliver the latest news to you and have included a feature
for folks to understand what is going on in the league. You can read all
the action by going to the domestic season news.
On another note, Alvin Corneal has agreed to write a monthly column
for Trinidad and Tobago Football Online on his views on football
in Trinidad and Tobago and around the World. I hope you will further enjoy
the site.
Jack says: "No!"
Warner...to the rescue
Concacaf President and Fifa Executive Jack Warner has poured cold
water over the idea of Concacaf merging with the CSF, the governing body
of South American football. Speaking to The Trinidad Express
on Thursday, Warner outlined that his plan was to have the two confederations
only cooperate. He would like to see the poorer countries in Concacaf benefit
from the use of football facilities in South America. He has already talked
to Argentinean President Carlos Menem about the use of that country's facilities
for Caribbean teams. Warner said the idea of the Confederations could
only go as far as club competitions where Concacaf clubs will compete against
CSF clubs in tournaments and the sharing of facilities.
The idea of the merger is heavily supported by big Mexican clubs who
would enjoy greater revenue if the two Confederations would merge. Also
supporting the idea is CSF President Nicolas Leoz. With the merger comes
three additional World Cup spots and greater revenue if more South American
countries qualify for subsequent World Cup tournaments. However, according
to Warner the idea has only generated a luke warm response from the United
States. Leoz speaking to ESPN stated: "We have interpreted the wish
of United States and Mexican football to be close to us...We have
always believed that the CSF and CONCACAF should unite to become a single
force at world level. I don't believe that anybody could be against an
approximation of the federations, for this reason it appears to me that
there is no obstacle from any candidate or any president. Obviously, there
is a long way to go to define this idea but the main thing is that the
will exists among the counties involved." He made those comments at the
launching of a tournament called the Copa Merconte in which clubs from
Mexico, the United States and five other South American countries will
compete.
The Mexican Football Federation has thrown it's weight behind the idea.
However, if one is to look at who runs the MFF it will reveal that the
big clubs like Guadalajara have there say in what organization does. What
ever the big clubs want they get. If you have any doubt check out what
happened Mexico's former head coach in Bora Militovic when he went head
to head with the top club's presidents. If I was a betting
man ( I don't bet anymore since I lost $200 on the Tyson-Hollyfield fight
two years ago) I would put money on Warner. I say there is no way that
Jack Warner sells out Concacaf like a two dollar prostitute. One friend
remarked to me that since the MFF wants a merger, Jack Warner should use
all his power to get Mexico and Venezuela to switch confederations. I fully
support that idea.
Confusion mares Barnsley lost.
Barnsley fan restrained as he goes after referee.
Clint Marcelle must be scratching his head at the sight he saw on Saturday.
In Barnsley's game with Liverpool he saw a pitch invasion by one incensed
Barnsley fan, a wave of fans storming the field after the game and the
sending off of three of his teammates. Clint Marcelle started for Barnsley
and had two good shots that just went over the crossbar inside the first
ten minutes. Barnsley battled back from a 2-1 deficit to tie the game on
a Redfern penalty. However, a goal in the 90th minute by Liverpool
won the game. The 3-2 lost by Barnsley leaves them third to last in the
English Premier league with just two points between them and staying up
in the league.
Yorke and Villa reach safety zone.
Dwight Yorke and Aston Villa have reached the point where they can say
they will be playing in the English top flight next year. They
did so with a convincing 4-1 win over Everton with Yorke scoring two goals
and causing most of the problems for the Everton defense. Yorke almost
scored when he just missed a past from one of his teammates
and made a 50 yard run only to have his shot intercepted by a Everton defender.
Yorke scored his first goal from the penalty spot after his teammate was
brought down in the area. His second goal came when he waltzed in on a
past from Hendrie to tap in Villa's fourth goal. Villa now have 42 points
which is considered the safety zone for staying up in the Premier league.

Rougier to the rescue again.
Mr. Rescue
Tony Rougier should ask for a name change. His last minute penalty, the
second in two weeks, extended Hibernian the slimmest of lifelines to stay
up in the Scottish Premier league. Rougier, the man-of-the-match, almost
scored Hibernian's opening goal. He skipped past two defenders from a standing
position and delivered a cross to an open teammate who headed wide of the
post. Rougier stroked home his fifth goal of the season to tie Aberdeen
1-1.
Marvin Andrews sent off in Raith game.
Marvin Andrews was given his marching orders in the 50th minute in Raith
Rover's game with Patrick Thistle. He was the last man in the penalty box
when he brought down a Patrick striker headed toward goal. That meant that
he was automatically sent off for the infraction. The tackle resulted in
Patrick scoring on the ensuing penalty kick. However, Raith had the game
well in hand as they easily won the game 2-1.
All MLS T&T players see action.
Stern John and Ansil Elcock were both in action on Sunday afternoon when
there Columbus Crew took on fellow T&T nationals Brian Haynes and Mickey
Trotman of the Dallas Burn. Stern John started and had some five shots
on goal. Ansil Elcock came on in the second half. The game was a tight
one with Dallas emerging 2-1 winners. Both Brian Haynes and Mickey Trotman
saw action. Haynes coming on in the 58th minute and Trotman in the 78th
minute.
Both Evans Wise and David Nahkid started for New England in there season
opener with MLS champs DC United. Wise created some problems for the United
defense when his crossed was miffed by his teammate but fell nicely to
another who buried the shot past the goalie. However, in the 88th minute
DC United tied the game and forced it to sudden death overtime. After nothing
was decided in the extra period a shootout took place. Wise had his shot
in the shootout saved and the Rev went down 2-1.
In the shooting range...
Jerren Nixon came off the bench in the 77th minute to help in a 3-0 win
over F.C St.Gallen. Zurich are currently in fourth position and looking
for a European spot.Russell Latapy came off the bench to help in a Boavista
2-1 win over Portuguese giants Benfica. The win moves them up one place
to fifth and closer to a UEFA cup place.
What do you think of the merger plans? Leave a measage.
