FORMER Strike Squad midfielder Colvin Hutchinson scored two vital goals to lead South to 4-1 victory over North on penalty kicks in their "Classic" at Dr Joao Havelange Concacaf Centre of Excellence, Macoya, yesterday.

The W Connection player, who came on as a second half substitute headed home an injury time equaliser and then converted his team's first attempt from the spot. The teams had battled to a 2-2 tie in regulation time.

Before the "penalty-decider" both teams had displayed a good exhibition of football in front of a small but appreciative crowd.

South, starting with eight W Connection players in their line-up, had the better of the early exchanges. Guyanese Collie Hercules came close on two occasions for South, having his shot deflected out from close range and then heading straight into goalkeeper Clayton Ince's hands.

North's best try in the opening 15 minutes was Arnold Dwarika's low effort which 'keeper Anthony Clarke saved low down.

South's defence came under pressure nearing the end of the first half, but the likes of Sherwin Julien, Charles Pollard and Rene Regis in defence for South kept them intact.

South drew first blood in the 53rd minute when W Connection's Elva powered a shot past Michael McComie after a penetrative run on the right side. McComie, who replaced Ince in goal for North, and his defenders appeared surprised by Elva's quick action.

Ten minutes after the opening goal, Hercules brought the best out of McComie from the edge of the 18-yard box.

North, who had Michael Forgenie just back from Finland in their side, found their equaliser in the 68th minute when Carlos Edwards wrong sided a defender before passing to substitute Marc Borde to slot past Marshall in goal.

Two minutes after the restart Edwards was again instrumental in his team's second goal, crossing from the right for substitute Kendall Velox to stab home.

North should have put the game out of their opponents reach, but neither Dwarika nor Edwards could find the mark.

They paid the price as Hutchinson arrived to head past McComie to tie the scores at 2-2 in injury time.

The Tobagonian missed his first try from the spot, but make amends from the re-take ordered by referee Ramesh Ramdahn.

Coulson Dick struck North's second attempt wide and Borde's kick was stopped by 'keeper Marshall. Regis, David George and Jean all converted their chances to ensure that South were the victors on the day.
