THESE days nothing seems capable of stopping W Connection in the Craven A Professional Football League.

Watched by club president David John Williams and a large party of supporters, the southerners scored their sixth straight victory of the season when they shut out Defence Force 2-1 at Guaracara Park on Friday evening.

Two goals in the space of four minutes in the second half by St Lucian Earl Jean (49th minute) and local boy Wesley Webb, a penalty in the 53rd minute downed the Army 2-1.

They are now alone at the top of the standings with eighteen points, six ahead of the soldier-coast guard combination.

In front of a sizeable crowd, the two top teams went about the opening minutes in a cautious manner.

Connection came closest to taking the lead in the 17th minute when Sierra Leone striker Abdulai Conteh headed an outswinger by Webb onto the cross bar. Moments before army goalkeeper Clayton Ince had to push out a shot by Webb for a corner.

Minutes later, the national 'keeper was again called into action as Conteh's effort following a neat one two with Jean, forced him to save.

Despite having more possession, the passing in a and around the 18-yard box was disappointing, while the Army, whose best effort was a weak try from Jason Scotland went straight to Anthony Clarke in goal.

Whatever pep talk was given by the Connection coaching staff, headed by Stuart Fevrier, worked wonders in the second half.

Four minutes into it, Jean fired the warning shot on the soldiers when he was left unmarked at the first post to head home Webb's left side cross for his fourth goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Webb dropped the bomb that blew the Army apart.

National midfielder Lyndon Andrews sneaked his way past at least four defenders before being fouled by Dennis Lawrence.

Referee Neil Brizan immediately awarded the penalty which Webb converted to the left of Ince. The former St Benedict's College striker later received the "Man of the match" award sponsored by Industrial Security Consultants.

Six minutes elapsed before Army pulled one back when Carlos Edwards' left side cross intended for Errol McFarlane, somehow beathim and Clarke in goal.

Following that the fast tempo of the match disappeared as the Connection midfield eased up a bit. Most of the plays were now in their half of the field, but still the Army seemed to be using the wrong guns on the evening.

Both Hutson Charles and McFarlane missed chances they would later regret.

The eventual winners breathed a sigh of relief when Stephen James collected a pass from Hutson Charles, but with the opposing defence flat footed, James looked on in dismay as his shot agonisingly came off the left post in the closing minutes.

When the final whistle came, the "After the game" celebrations began with Superblue's theme song blasting from the DJ speakers.

Only CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh are left to taste the Connection flavour.

Before that, they meet Futgof at the Hasely Crawford Stadium today from 4 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. A double header takes place at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, with Joe Public up against Point Fortin Civic Centre from 4 pm, followed by Doc's Khelwalaas and Police at 6 pm.
