Star & Song
While starlight frosted all the plain,
The quiet hills of Bethlehem
Held close the little sleeping town
That nestled to the heart of them.
And night and silence softly flung
Their spell of peace and stillness down
About the shepherds and their flocks,
About the cattle and the town.
No bell pealed out from frescoed spire;
No carol echoed in the street;
No candlelight at casement glowed,
The tiny Son of God to greet.
Only the watching shepherds heard
The song the angels came to sing.
Only three wise men marked the star
That told the birth night of a King!
