SEASON OF CHANGE

Starting the 1973 season, the Los Angeles Rams had a new owner in Carroll Rosenbloom.

A new head coach in Chuck Knox. A new QB in John Hadl and even new uniforms.

Coming off their first losing season in six years in 1972, the experts said it was a rebuilding year for the Rams.

Picking them no higher than 3rd in the western division.        

The season opener was in Kansas City against the Chiefs. When they took the field in Arrowhead Stadium, it was the first time for many to see them in their new Blue and Gold uniforms.

The Rams dominated the Chiefs in every category.

The Ram defense held KC to only 40 yards rushing on 21 carries. Recorded 5 sacks and intercepted one pass.

While the Rams offense rushed for 260 yards.

Rookie Lawrence Mcutcheon ran for 120 yards and Jim Bertleson went for 140. Hadl was near perfect, connecting on 75% of his passes.

He threw two first half touchdowns, one to TE Pat Curran and another to Mcutcheon.

Even the special teams scored as Steve Preece ran for a TD on a fake FG. It was 20-0 at the half. The final score was 23-13 Rams.

The 1973 Ram-Chief game is the one I cherish. It was the birth of great players and great teams. The Rams would win their division seven straight seasons (an NFL record) and take their fans on one hell of a ride. I am thankful I was one of them.

RAMS MAKE IT 7-0 










THE 1985 MEETING


The 6-0 Los Angeles Rams met the 3-3 Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. All phases of the LA attack dominated the Chiefs. 


Eric Dickerson ran for 111 yards and Deiter Brock made no mistakes as LA had the ball for over 41 minutes of the game.


The Ram secondary again showed it is one of the best. Gary Green, Leroy Irvin and Nolan Cromwell intercepted the Chiefs QB's.


The Rams went to 7-0 and increased their lead on the Niners by 4 games.


Rams shutout the Chiefs 16-0.

RAMS GET KC RESPECT










The Chiefs weren't confident of beating the Los Angeles Rams.


They were arrogant about it.


They were undefeated. Had Joe Montana at QB. Playing before 78,000 of their fans at Arrowhead.


Against the the free falling Rams.


And on top of that Len Dawson at halftime will be honored.


And that arrogance cost the Chiefs.


On the Chiefs first two offensive series, they went for it on 4th down. 


One was a 4th and 3 yards and the second was a 4th and 6.


And both times the Ram defense denied Montana and KC.


It woke up a Ram defense that dominated the Chiefs from then on.


By the end of the first quarter it was 13-0 Rams.


Tony Zendejas kicked a 32 yard FG. Then Chris Chandler hit Flipper Anderson on a 72 yard TD.


And before the quarter ended, Zendajes hit another FG.





Jerome Bettis ran for 132 yards as the offensive line was dominating the Chiefs front four.

 
Montana was picked off 3 times as the Ram defense did something no other team has ever done.


Shutout Joe Montana.


The money-line was 8 to 1.


The Ram defense was still fuming after the game of the Chiefs giving them no respect going for the first down needing 6 yards.


They respect them now as the Rams went into Arrowhead and knocked the Chiefs from the unbeatens. And handing Montana his only goose eggs as a QB.


The LA Rams whip the chiefs 16-0.
