Sisters, Anna and Maria Thiesfeld left their home in Wechold, Germany, arriving at Ellis
Island 26 Aug 1923. Anna was 17 and Maria was 22. They arrived on the ship "Albert
Ballin", departing from the port of Hamburg, Germany. gave their destination as
Glencoe, MN...to their uncle, Diedrich Thiesfeld and wife, who paid for their passage.
Their father is given as Lud. Thiesfeld of Wechold, Germany. I don't know just how they
fit in to the family. An Anna Thiesfeld married 10 Nov 1926 to Arthur W. Buckentin of
Minnesota. It could be the same Anna.

My grandfather came to America with his twin brother, Dick in 1884. They came on
the S.S. Baltimore and landed in New York on September 20. They were each given
$900 before they emigrated as their oldest brother inherited the German farm. They
ran out of money in Chicago, so they stayed there and worked for awhile. They had
an older brother, William who settled near Syracuse, Nebraska. He probably came
under the same arrangement. Dick finally settled near Talmage, Nebraska.
My grandfather, Rudolph, batched with John Bruns, a German friend or possible
relative, near Burr, Nebraska before his marriage to my grandmother, Elise
Grannemann. They were neighbors. After their marriage they settled near
Sterling, Nebraska. My grandmother’s parents were Henry and Christina Von
Beran Grannemann. She had one sister who died at the age of 8. Her parents
originally settled near Elkport, Iowa before moving to Helena, Nebraska near Burr.
These communities are all in southeastern Nebraska. The Grannemanns’ came to
America in 1857 via New Orleans as their sailship was 16 weeks drifting off course.
They were meant to land in New York. The Grannemann’s hailed from Northhemern,
Land Kreis of Minden in Westfalen.
Hermann Diederich Rudolph Thiesfeld was born January 7, 1864 and died June 7, 1924
He married Elise Mary Grannemann on March 29, 1894. She was born November
19, 1870 and died December 30, 1951.

All my aunts and uncles stayed in southeastern Nebraska with the exception of
Alma Lowrey who moved to Spickard, Missouri.
We have a sketchy history of our Thiesfeld lineage before the immigration of
my grandfather Rudolph Thiesfeld. The family originated at Dedendorf from where
they moved to Dolldorf. The Thiesfelds worked as hired hands on the Norman farm
for several hundred years until the farmer Ehler Norman and his wife had three
daughters but no sons. The oldest daughter, Catherina Margaretta Elise inherited
the farm. She was born September 3, 1760. She married Jurgen Heinrich Stieghan
of Ribbesbuttel on January 20, 1786. The farm seems to have passed thru the
hands of women for many years since living sons weren’t to be found.
The Stieghans had no sons but 3 daughters who all lived on the farm. One of them
was Catherina Dora Maria born August 16, 1791. Her mother Catherian
died February 22, 1803. Her father, Jurgen Heinrich Stieghan died in 1802.
Catherina Dora married Johann Friedrich Leiding (Leyding) on April 29, 1814.
She gave birth to twins who died shortly thereafter. They had one son, Gerd
Heinrich Leiding who was born June 21, 1816. His father died August 19, 1819.
The widow Lieding, maiden name Stieghan then married Gerd Heinrich Thiesfeld.
He worked as lower help in the area of Meemson. From this marriage there was
a stillborn child and 6 living children with 4 dying in their youth. Another
drowned at the age of 20. Only the second youngest son survived, Johann Gerd
Thiesfeld born September 23, 1829.
So now Catheria Dora Stieghan Leiding Thiesfeld has 2 living sons…one from
each marriage. According to tradition then, when Leiding was 21 years old, he
could have taken possession of his father’s farm, but since his mother was the
owner and not his father, both sons were equally righted. At the age of 40, he
did get the farm in 1856 when his mother died, and his half-brother, Johann
Gerd Thiesfeld bought a larger farm in Dolldorf near Lohe. Catherina Dora
Stieghan Leiding Thiesfeld died November 26, 1856. His father, Johann Gerd
Thiesfeld died September 17, 1859.
Johann Gerd Thiesfeld (the son) married Anna Maria Margaretha Misegades in 1855
in Dolldorf. They had 2 daughters and 7 sons as far as we know. One of those sons
was my grandfather, Herman Diederich Rudolph born January 7, 1864 – June 7, 1924.
He had a twin brother, Diederich Friedrich Christian and an older brother,
Friedrich Dietrich Wilhelm born in 1862. These 3 brothers all settled in
southeastern Nebraska as I have already mentioned. Gerd Heinrich Friedrich born in
1856 remained on the German farm as I have already noted. His sister Dorette
Louise born in 1869 married a Meinking and she remained in Germany near
the homeplace. We are familiar with Gerd and Louise because
my grandmother and father visited them in 1930. We know nothing about
my grandfather’s other brothers and sisters except that Margaretha Maria Doris
born in 1859 may have emigrated to Boston and operated a cranberry bog. We

The following family left their home in Germany and gave their
destination as the US. I don't know where they actually went in the
US. Information from passenger list of people who traveled from
Bremen to New York. This record is from 1864.
