Donald Beaty

1945-1963

Class of 1963. . .Musically inclined. . .enjoys acting . ..blond and quiet. . .future includes college. . .
Don made it to college in the fall of 1963, however, he wasn't there too long before he died in a drowning accident. It is believed that both he and his swimming companion were "in trouble", but when help arrived, Don insisted that he'd 'be alright' and to save his friend first but when the life guard returned, Don was gone. On a personal note, I have known Don since our first day in Mrs. Baxter's kindergarten class right through to our High school graduation. He was a shy sweet 'boy' who enjoyed band and acting. Don was an adopted only child. I can't help but feel angry that Don was taken much too soon. I am proud to have created this web site where I can keep Don's, as well as our other dearly departed classmate's memories alive. R.I.P.

James "Benny" Bengaff
1945-2023

Class of '63. Jim went into the US Army right out of High School and served four years receiving the Good Conduct Medal. He earned his BS in Biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Jim is a widower. He was married to Linda Carey for only 8 years before she passed leaving him to raise their two daughters Anne and Sarah. Jim has 5 granddaughters Laura, Linda, Jessica, Chantelle and Christa. Jim has worked as a Park Ranger and a deckhand on Ferry and Fishing boats and a school bus driver in his retirement years. Jim’s travels had taken him to Europe, British Isles, Mexico, Guatemala and through the United States. Jim was interested in anything old and historical. Jim was one of the 'raised in Allendale' kids with his younger sister Jane ('64) . His child hood friendship with Jim Valkenburgh continued through their adult Years.

Jim V and Jim B Christmas 1991

Jim's daughter Sarah writes: I hope there is solace to know that he lived and died on his terms. The grief of losing our mother had a profound impact on his life. He lived the way he wanted and chose to. He took the path less travelled.
Taxicab driver, Ferry Deckhand, park Ranger, school Bus driver, Janitor were some of the many jobs/careers of dads. He stayed home with us as children. Vacations to Maine, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania every year. We lived a simple frugal life in the woods of Vermont, a truly sacred place to experience childhood. Car shows in the summer, Gun shows in the winter. We would go to every one in Vermont on the weekends. And when dad found something in the classifieds, he wanted to look at, off We would go for an adventure on a Saturday or Sunday.
Dad started working again the summer before I went into 7th grade. He was a ranger one summer for the Corp of Engineer’s park in Thetford Vt. We camped out in a local campground in a small camper that summer. He worked several small jobs that didn't suit him for a few years, then he discovered School Bus driving. That was his longest career/job. He actually is quite "famous" in our community from that. He also drove shuttle bus for a local ski resort. (Once he was recognized in a NJ mall from that job.) He worked as a school Janitor for many years and received a small pension from that. He especially enjoyed driving bus for the "troubled kids". These children went to school that were essentially jails for youth. One time a student refused to get off the bus and go into the school. The school sent out their "Goons". Dad asked them to wait. He went to the back of the bus, talked to the student and reasoned with him to go to school. Dad would go into Burlington(big city of Vermont) and was often greeted by his students and invited to hang with them. Kids and people felt safe around him and not disregarded.
Jim will be interred at Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery August 25th. Condolences can be sent to Jim's daughter Sarah at girafee4@gmail.com

Douwe "Rex" Bleeker

Class of 1965
August 21 1947-December 12, 2008

Charlie Co./2nd Bn/506th Inf./101st Airborne Div. Tour of Duty: South Vietnam 1970-1971 "A Rendezvous With Destiny" In Memory of Rex Bleeker...."The Professor"....2nd Platoon
Rex was a big, warmhearted, friendly, and helpful kind of guy. He was a little older than most of us when he arrived in South Vietnam. He was very intelligent and well educated. To his "Currahee Brothers" he became known as "The Professor" and everyone had a gerat deal of respect and admiration for him. At least, Rex made it through that period of his life and came home to go on and finish the education that he valued so much. As you can see below, in the memorial flyer from his funeral. Rex went on to build a good productive life and raise a family. I am sure that his life had a good positive impact upon many people that knew him. I know for a fact that he had a great impact on the men of the 2nd Platoon that he served with. It is nice to see that Rex was able to fulfill some of his hopes, and dreams for the future.

Robert Chapin
Class of 1965

James "Jimmy" Coates
1945-2019

"James J" as he was referred to in his '63 year book quote, passed in early August of 2019 of a lung related illness. He was living in Hague, NY at the time of his passing. He and Bob Kunish ('62) were cousins. Bev Wall Van Buren ('63) had been in touch with him over the years and has many fond memories of Jim. She wrote:
Jimmy was a private person. He did not marry but he ran a successful bed and breakfast and loved to read he was also my Bridge partner after high school when I came home summers. Jimmy lived near me. Hague is right on Lake George and he had a beautiful boat, like a classic Chris Craft that we went out on with him - I’m laughing just thinking about it! The boat had a great sound system, he asked Dick and I if we liked Jazz. We said no, and that we liked rock and roll, so he then proceeded to play Jazz for the entire boat ride! Looking for converts possibly! He also smoked which led to his lung issues for sure! About 10 years ago he wanted to play tennis with me, he admitted he wasn’t in good shape and smoked, after we played he said he had been in the hospital, I thought he was kidding but no, he said he REALLY had been to the hospital! I told him he needed to get on an exercise program, walking anyway. He asked if 'walking to the bathroom counted'! Before our 50th reunion in 2013, Merry (Monaghan) flew out early to stay with me and we invited Jimmy to come to dinner! We tried to convince him to come to the reunion with no luck on that but it was a fun night. I know Jim had a Bed and Breakfast that he ran for many years. He lived in Vermont before he moved to Hague. I know he was a good tennis player as well. He was certainly a funny guy. Jimmy’s cousin, Bob Kunisch, had been telling me Jim wasn’t doing well lately and didn’t want to see anyone - I should have at least called. You always think you have more time. Another lesson learned too late! Thank you for keeping us all in touch and remembered! Bev."

Many of Jim's classmates have responded with sadness to Jim's passing and described him as Unique. The ladies remember him as being 'very good looking' and an 'excellent dancer'. Skip Kelly remembers Jimmy as "a passive member of the **ABPG. who was shy and mostly quiet and just wanted to have friends. May he rest in peace.

**The ABPG stands for "The Allendale Ball Park Gang", It was comprised of several young men who grew up together and spent much of their time at the Allendale ball park who identified themselves by wearing black trench coats and toting black umbrellas Not to be confused with the gangs we hear of today, they were more like the 'Little Rascals' from the "Our Gang Comedy" series. I remember them driving around town in a black hearse they called the 'Black Maria'. They were a harmless group of young men who like Jimmy were very "Unique"!

Robert "Bob" Stephen Cloonan
7/28/1941-7/31/2020

Bob's year book quote reads as follows: "Let come what may." Good looking-"quit foolin' around"-neat dresser-French fries and hamburgers-dislikes oral book reports-will enter the armed services after graduation.

Robert Stephen CLOONAN, age 78, of Plantation, Florida passed away after a long illness at his home on Friday, July 31, 2020. Robert, "Bobby," was born September 28, 1941 in Suffern, New York to the late John Burke Cloonan and Virginia Mary Doyle. He met Pam, the love of his life, at the age of 18. They married three and a half years later and had five wonderful daughters: Cathy, Susie, Jill, Linda, and Kimmy.

Bobby grew up in Mahwah, New Jersey along with his two other rowdy Irish brothers and his sister. After graduating from Mahwah High School, he worked as a mechanic where he became skilled at his trade which ultimately opened the doors for him to use those skills in many different areas. This also made him the "go-to" Mr. Fix It for family and friends, a role that never made him rich but made him a blessing to everyone. After he got married, he graduated from the Police Academy and worked for the Mahwah Police Department. Following the births of three children, he and Pam decided to relocate to Florida to be closer to grandparents and complete their family with two more children. He started a new career with Southern Bell where he worked as a service tech for twenty-nine years. Retiring early allowed him to spend time with his wife, five daughters (#girldad), five son-in-laws, and twelve grandchildren, enjoying countless get-togethers, cruises, and family adventures. He was the stronghold of the family. We will all miss his contagious smile, quick wit, gossip sessions, inability to keep a secret, and constant interruptions of every subject with a joke. Bob was not a man of many serious words, but his infectious personality left its mark on everyone he met. We will miss him dearly and love him forever.

Bob is survived by his wife, Pam, and their daughters and their families: Cathleen and her husband Joseph Williams; Susan and her husband Daniel M'Sadoques; Jill and her husband Robert Feick; Linda and her husband Brian Stanish; and Kimberly and her husband Paul Donovan. He is survived by his twelve grandchildren and their spouses and one soon-to-be great-granddaughter: Joey, Missy (Layton and step-children Ashton and Zoe), Daniel, Derek (Angelia), Nik (Amaryllis and expected daughter Azalea), Brooke, Paige, Alexis, Kyle, Mackenzie, Griffin, and Christine. He is also survived by his siblings John Cloonan and his wife Nancy, Donald Cloonan, and sister Virginia and her husband Richard Zelnick, along with many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones."

Brian Klaschka '60 writes: I remember playing sandlot baseball with Glen many, many times at the Allendale athletic field after school and tackle football (no pads) with Glenn, Bobby Lehman, Donny Thurston, Totsey Montaine, Artie Lambert, Mike Kunish, Warren Dandorf, Ray and Steve Murray and a host of other lads. Glen was a good athlete and very difficult to bring down. He had a good eye for the ball (baseball) and was extremely difficult to strike out and was a tremendous power hitter. He relished blasting one deep into the Allendale pool while batting lefty much to the annoyance of Mr. Tremetiere. I'm glad to see he spent his life coaching something he loved to do.

I was in touch for a while with Buzz Dailey, primarily through his ex-wife, Andrea, and was very sorry to see his name among those we've lost. He and Andrea Reynolds (also class of 1961) married about a year after their MHS graduation. They settled in the Phoenix, Arizona area within a couple of years. Though they divorced they remained friends over the years. I visited when I was in graduate school in California in the seventies. At one point he had a leather crafting store. My lasting memory of Buzzy is a twilight ride on the back of his motorcycle in the Arizona desert. As far as I know, Andrea is still in the Phoenix area. Probably still applying her mathematically gifted mind to the upcoming tax season when not into western line dancing.

Carol's yearbook quote reads as follows: "Dem" Class of 1963 .... "Are you serious?" .....'57 Ford convertibles ..... . blue eyes... .football games. ......cute . ......Mr.Dierman .... business world or airline stewardess
Originally I wrote that the details of Carol's life and death were unclear but felt fortunate to have had Carol work on the class of '63's 25th Reunion in 1988 and thankful that we could see our beautiful Carolyn one last time. However, on Feb.8th,2012 I received an e mail from Kelly Roque, Carolyn's daughter, which touched my heart and made me realize just how much my efforts to keep the memories of our departed classmates alive were appreciated.

Kelly wrote: "I just came across the Heavenly Yearbook page today as my family remembers our mom who'd passed away 17 years ago today at the age of 49. Just missing her,I was suddenly curious to see if I could dig anything up with a search for Carolyn Dembia when I found your MHS page. I saw your post asking for information regarding Carolyn's life and death and thought I'd share a short bio with you to add to your post. Your words about mom were so sweet,"our beautiful Carolyn". Mom passed after a year-long battle with lung cancer on Feb, 8th, 1995. She is survived by her husband, our dad, Joseph Russo, and three children: Kelly Russo (Roque), Michael Russo and Joseph Russo Jr. Our family had lived in Franklin Lakes for about 25 years and my parents owned and operated (my father and Michael still owning) "Computer Discount of NJ" in West Milford, NJ. Mom would be so proud if she'd lived long enough to see all of us marry and know the 6 grandchildren she now has along with the fact that her youngest son, Joseph continued to pursue his musical aspirations and is currently the drummer for The Grateful Dead, now known as Furthur. Carolyn's older brother, Thomas Dembia passed from a massive heart attack only one year before my mother in 1994. He lived in Phoenix, AZ, and is survived by his wife, Nancy and two adult children, Tracy and Jeffrey.

Thank you for this today. Although my brothers and I are now all nearly the age my mother was when she passed 17 years ago, we still miss her dearly. It's heartening to know others out there are remembering her and her other classmates who've all left this place far too soon.
God Bless, Kelly Roque. Anyone wanting to share your memories of Carol with Carol's family may contact her
daughter Kelly at kelroque@hotmail.com

Klaus Gunter Fischer

Klaus's yearbook quote reads as follows: "Fish". . . "who deserves well need not an other's praise.". . . Our tall German boy . . . conscientious worker . . . the 'big four" . . . be one of the first space travelers . . cross country

Klaus Günter Fischer, mathematician, teacher, husband, father, avid cyclist and basketball player, died from respiratory failure associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), on July 2nd at home in Fairfax, VA. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Eva Thorp, their son Eric and daughter Kathryn.br>
Klaus Fischer, PhD., was Chairman of the mathematics department at George Mason University, where he taught for 36 years and made many contributions to the development of the University as it is today. He was proud this May to be present at the graduation and hooding of the first three students to be granted Ph.D.'s in Mathematics, a program he helped shepherd into existence. For many years, with a Woodrow Wilson fellowship, he led workshops for local middle school teachers. He also worked collaboratively with faculty in the Graduate School of Education on a variety of statewide math education initiatives. Each summer he led a math camp for talented middle school children, and he was a national judge and problem writer for the Math Counts competition which brings promising middle school student winners from around the country to Washington, DC.
Klaus was born in Zwickau, Germany, during WWII, the youngest of three boys. After the war, his family returned to their pre-war apartment in Berlin. Klaus enjoyed telling people that he was one of those small children posing with U.S. soldiers after the Berlin Airlift. At the age of 9, he immigrated to the United States aboard a retired U.S. troop ship, arriving in New York City on Flag Day, which he celebrated yearly thereafter. The family settled in Mahwah, NJ, where Klaus attended elementary school and graduated from Mahwah High School where he was a cross country star and vice-president of his class. He received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Lafayette College in 1967, a Master's degree in Mathematics from Syracuse University, and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1973. Mathematics was one of his great loves; even in his final week, he informed a hospice case manager that the one thing he still wanted to do was to prove a conjecture he'd been working on.
After earning his Ph.D., he moved to Northern Virginia to begin his professorship at George Mason University. He was married to Eva Thorp in 1975, and they bought their first house together in Fairfax. Their second house is a 120 year old farm house in Fairfax Station. There Klaus loved to think about math in solitude beside his nightly fire in the library. A few years ago, with help from colleagues in the Math Department, he built a garage for the house that was designed by his brother-in-law Charles Thorp to match the style of the house. Klaus was always active; up until the week before his diagnosis, he still biked to work. He loved playing with the faculty basketball team, of which he was a member for more than 30 years. He tried to never miss their noontime practices. He also loved playing tennis and was always on the lookout for new opponents. At the age of 45, with his friend Jim Merz, he biked across country in just over 30 days, camping along the way and covering more than 100 miles a day – even crossing the Rockies. He carried water from the Pacific the entire way and deposited it in the Atlantic at Virginia Beach. Klaus passed his love of athletics to his children His daughter was a swimmer and rower as well as avid cyclist, and his son ran cross country and played soccer and basketball and is also an avid cyclist. For several seasons, Klaus was a coach for the Burke Basketball program with Eric's teams. He also took on many other volunteer tasks with his children's sports programs

He is survived by his wife Eva Thorp of Fairfax, his daughter Kathryn and her husband Juan de Chamié of Berlin, Germany; his son, Eric, of Fairfax; brother Hans and his wife Meg of Parker, Colorado; brother Wolfgang (MHS class of 1960) and his wife Jill of Waterford, Connecticut; and a large extended family.
The following message was sent to his colleagues at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Vikas Chandhoke, dean of the College of Science.
Dear Colleagues,
It is with deep sorrow that I tell you that Dr. Klaus Fischer died Thursday, July 2,2009 from respiratory failure associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He is survived by his wife, Eva Thorp; their son, Eric; and daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Juan de Chamie?. Klaus received his PhD from Northwestern University in 1973 and joined the Mason faculty that same year. He was serving a second term as chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department at the time of his death. Widely respected by colleagues around the country, his multifaceted career as a mathematician put him at the forefront of education for students at all levels, teacher training, statewide education initiatives and mathematics reform activities. For many years, Klaus was a national judge for MATHCOUNTS, an enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. His research interests spanned a variety of complex problems, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra and graph theory and combinatorics with a geometric bent. A man of many passions, Klaus was an avid tennis player; a founder and 30-year member of a noontime faculty basketball team; and a bicyclist who pedaled across the country in 30 days one summer, crossing the Rockies and carrying water from the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles to add to the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia Beach. He continued to bike to work until recently. His other interests included folk, bluegrass and blues music; carpentry; and quiet time with his thoughts in front of a roaring fire. Those close to him agree on one of his most significant contributions:
“Klaus always saw the lighter side of darker events and gave us comic relief at needed times.” He was a fine man who will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Vikas Chandhoke. Dean, College of Science.

Cindy's yearbook quote reads as follows: "Cindy". . .Hi Nut!". . clear blue eyes. .... sweatshirts. ....Cash's vocabulary tests ...... letters from Georgia Tech .... business school

Cindy's husband Ralph Beal (class of '62) writes:
Cindy and I married in 1965. I was starting my last year at Georgia Tech in Howard county MD. where we lived until her death. I had a US government job. I had the same job the hole time we were married. We had two children Steven and Laura. They both went to college thanks to Cindy working for the Howard county government. Cindy and I had a very good life together. We never suffered a hardship until the end. Since I worked for the government I had up to 6 weeks leave a year. We used it. We took our kids on great vacations all over the US. We camped in all the big national parks. My parents lived in Bolder Col. and we used this as a base for many trips. Cindy and I also made trips to Canada, Mexico ,the Caribbean and England. While our children were young she was a stay at home mom and enjoyed this very much. Cindy was diagnosed with breast cancer in Dec. 1987 and yes, that is the reason we did not make the '88 reunion. We got her into an advanced treatment program at John Hopkins University Hospital. She had a very aggressive form of cancer and they gave her a very advanced treatment program for the time. Cindy was a real fighter. I will always have deep respect for the way she lived her life while she fought her illness. We continued to live our lives and still traveled and Cindy worked while all this was going on. I learned much from Cindy on how to live.

My son had completed college and was working when Cindy was ill. My daughter was starting her last year in school when Cindy became terminally ill. My daughter dropped out of school for a year when her mother needed her. I am in dept to her beyond what I can ever repay. Cindy died in May 1992. I have remarried and now have a much larger family. In my early life I had no idea of the ultimate importance of people in your life and how they are your real wealth. I am wealthy. Ralph Beall (Class of 1962)

James Russell Glasgow

The details of Jimmy's life after MHS are unknown. Please contact Gloria Klaschka at:gloridianne2945@yahoo.com

James Neil Goodrich

January 14,1943-November 1,2018

James (“Jim”) Neil Goodrich, 75, husband of Luisa Francoeur and longtime resident of Westport, CT passed away on Thursday November 1, 2018 in Yale New Haven Hospital while being treated for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He had a big heart which encompassed a wide variety of communities, and which embraced him in return. Jim is fondly remembered as someone who genuinely cared about others and went out of his way to render assistance. Sometimes this was to his detriment, as illustrated by an episode in Colorado when he enthusiastically helped push a stranger’s car out of the snow – only to tear loose his bicep and cut short his vacation.
After retiring from a career in business in and around New York City, Jim started a new career in the Westport Public School system. He began as a disciplinarian at Bedford Middle School and followed his last eighth-grade class to Staples High School, where he hit his stride as a substitute teacher, mentor, coach, and sports superfan over the last fifteen years. One of the first communities he found for himself at Staples was as a volunteer coach of the wrestling team, where he was able to draw on his own experience as a college wrestler at Ohio Wesleyan University (where he was proud to say he was never pinned until his last match!) and get down on the mat with students fifty years his junior.
Jim’s involvement in the Staples community was broad and deep. He served as coach of the sailing team, advisor to the Challenge Team and Barbecue Club, firm but caring Advance Placement test proctor, and organizer of fan buses and cheers for the boys’ soccer team.
Jim was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1943 to the late Harry and Elizabeth Goodrich, and lived in New Jersey until college. After his graduation from OWU in 1965, followed by a stint in their admissions office, Jim was drafted into the army. He served his country from ‘66 to ‘69 as an Army Lieutenant at Ft. Davis, Panama Canal Zone. He rose from the Commander of Company B (overseeing over 250 men) to Operations & Training, where he was responsible for 1,500 indirect reports at the Battalion level. Both capacities were well above the actual rank that he carried. He executed his assignments with distinction, and was awarded the Army Commendation of Honor. Jim was a true officer and gentleman, but never let his assignments get in his way of having fun. He earned the love and respect of his troops.
His time in Panama opened Jim’s eyes to different ways of life in the world. He embraced the opportunity to spend time in Latin America and on the water, cementing lifelong passions for travel and boating. Jim and Luisa took many trips together to locations nearby and far-flung, and continued sailing and powerboating, crisscrossing the Northeast through rivers, canals, and up and down the coast, often with fellow members of their beloved Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club. Jim’s love of sailing was so inescapably acute that as soon as he learned his daughter was pregnant with his first grandson, Jim immediately bought a small catboat on which to teach him to sail. In some seven years, he’ll be big enough to enjoy it.
Jim’s love of life -- and genuine joy in everyone he met -- extended to one of his side-gigs: marriage officiant for choice friends and loved ones. His preparation, insights and loving demeanor made the weddings he officiated special not only for the newlyweds, but for all who attended.
Jim spent time every summer since 1951 in Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod, in a cinderblock cottage built by his parents on land gifted to them by parishioners of his father’s church. Every year his family made the trip north from New Jersey, passing through Westport. It was the views of the Saugatuck from that vacation-bound route that called him to first make his home here in 1975. Westport has been his home ever since.
In addition to his wife Luisa, Jim is survived by his daughter Lisa Page, her husband William; stepsons Bartolomaeus Ryley and Andrew McWilliams, Andrew’s partner Linsey Hempel; grandson Nicolas, and Jim’s sister Beth Millikan and her husband, Al. Jim died after receiving a stem cell transplant from his daughter in a valiant effort to, as he put it, “extend a happy life.” Indeed, it was and will be so remembered.
A memorial service will be held for Jim at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport, CT on December 1st at 11:00am with a reception to follow at Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club, 6 Great Marsh Road, Westport, CT. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.hardingfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to: Hudson River Community Sailing (P.O. Box 20677, New York, NY 10011; www.hudsonsailing.org), the Freedom of the Press Foundation (601 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102; www.freedom.press), or Staples Tuition Grants (P.O. UPDATE: 11/21/2014: " I am James Griffin Sr.'s son. I heard about your website and visited it tonight. I just wanted to say thank you for your website. It means a lot to me. It brought tears to my eyes to see my Dad's picture and hear that song in the background. I know he is with the Lord.
Jim Griffin Jr.
Jimmy's widow writes: 11/22/2014: "I have not been coping with Jim's death very well. I found your website last month. It made me cry when I looked at it but also happy to see Jim's name and picture in it. It made me feel better. I just want to thank you so much for taking time out of your life to design this website. He was the love of my life. We would have been Married 45 years this past Jan. He was the most wonderful husband anyone could have. He was also the greatest father. We found out he had melanoma from a mole on his left leg back in 2008. He had many surgeries and treatments. He never complained. He could always make me laugh when I was sad. He was voted class clown. He could always make people laugh and was kind to everyone. Two days before Jim passed I had a belated birthday party for him at home. It was so wonderful having all our children and grandchildren there. It made him so happy so see everyone! Jim had a rough life growing up with both his parents being ill. He went to work at age 12 pumping gas to help pay his parents mortgage. He had a jewelry box in his room where he kept his money and would tell his family if they needed money to take whatever they needed. He had plenty of IOU’s that where never paid back but he never cared. He hated money said it was the root of all evil. After High School Jim raced cars and build motors. He went to Raceway Park and Hackettstown. He loved old cars and had many of them over the years. When we met he had a 1932 ford hot rod he called the Blue Max that he took me out in on our first date in Jan to the drive in on Rt 17 in Upper Saddle River with no heat !!! He was a gentleman and kept getting us hot chocolate. We eloped the following year when we got tired of both our parents wedding planning. I do not regret it at all and would do it over again in a heartbeat. Jim was the kindest person I have ever known. He would help anyone anytime. Neighbors over the years would ask him for help to fix things he would be right there. He was very handy and could fix anything. He worked on cars and rebuilt motors. When we were first married, his friends would come to our house and he would change their oil, put on new brakes or anything they needed and never ask for a penny. He was like another son to my mother and would do anything for her and she loved him as if he was her own son. She was sick for many years with COPD and lived three hours away in upstate NY. She was widowed in 1984 when my father passed from brain cancer at age 58. We went up almost every week to take care of her. Jim wanted to put an addition to our house so she could come and live with us but she didn’t want to leave her home. We helped her financially so she could remain in her home until she passed in 2004. He worked for the Township of Mahwah from 1970 until 2004. He always worked, sometimes working three jobs. He belonged to Co 2 Fire House, which he loved , and for many years drove the fire trucks , especially truck 215 which is no longer in service. Jim loved fishing, didn’t catch much, but loved to go and just relax. Jim was the the love of my life and now my children and grandchildren will be my love until I join Jim in heaven. He taught me to be a better person because he was the best one I have ever known. I just wanted to thank you again from the bottom of my heart. God Bless you.
Gail Griffin

Once again I have the heart breaking task to add one of my oldest and dearest friends to my Heaven's Yearbook. Mike had already transferred from MHS to Ramsey High when Jill Campell transferred from Ridgewood High to MHS in our Junior year. Jill and I met on the school bus and became instant friends. One night Jill and I were at the Warner movie theater in Ridgewood NJ, when two boys walked in and sat a few rows in front of us. I whispered to Jill, that's Mike Higgins and Carlton Ryfell. Jill proceeded to toss pop corn at them until she got their attention. After the movie we met in the lobby and from that moment on Mike and Jill were a couple. We'd all meet at Doc's Sweet Shop after school where we'd sneak in a few smokes before heading home. I'll never forget the day Mike blew this perfect smoke ring. Jill put her ring finger through it and said "I do"! We all laughed as Mike turned pale at just the thought! Who would ever guess that these two high school sweethearts that drifted apart after graduation would re- connect 49 years later and say 'I do' for real! They were together 7 years before Mike passed and shared a love that many can only dream about. Mike made the world a better place just by his presence and will be sorely missed by all who had the privlege of knowing him. Rest in Peace my dear friend.

Karen, Sorry to hear about the loss of your brother Douglas. Heard about my classmate Doug from my cousin (your classmate) Gloria Klaschka Pease and my classmate Bob Tremitiere via his sister Diane.
My high school recollection of Doug was his sincere thirst for knowledge and his commitment to be the best that he could be. Upon reading the facts of his life outlined in his obit, it is clear that he achieved that commitment and the world could use more like him.
Sympathetic regards,
Brian Klaschka
