WHAT WE'RE READING
New from the Stinky Cheese Guys
"Baloney (Henry P.)"
Jon Scieszka
Our price: $12.79 | You save: $3.20
...available here...
In Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's latest picture book, alien Henry
P. Baloney is at grave risk for Permanent Lifelong Detention from
his teacher unless he comes up with one excellent excuse for being
late to class. Remarkably, as Scieszka reports in his afterword,
when he received and decoded the transmission of this fabricated
story (directly from deep space, mind you), it was written in a
variety of Earth languages, including Finnish, Swahili, Latvian,
Esperanto, and Inuktitut (decoder included). Go figure. Runaway
rocket ships and hungry space creatures, anyone? (Ages 5 to 9)

Should I Stay or Should I Go?
"Waffle"
Chris Raschka
Our price: $12.80 | You save: $3.20
...available here...
Waffle is worried. He worries, he wonders, he wishes, he waits...
he even waffles. But will he ever work a wonder within and be brave
enough to fly? For every child who has ever wavered in the face of a
dreaded next step in life, Waffle's the fellow to hold your hand. He
knows how it is. He's been there, and he's conquered his fears. This
curious, almost freaky little book from the ingenious Caldecott
Honor artist Chris Raschka ("Yo! Yes?" and "Can't Sleep") is all
about that moment before taking the plunge. Raschka's ability to
communicate emotion in a single brushstroke is as uncanny as ever.

Kafka Junior
"The Transmogrification of Roscoe Wizzle"
David Elliott
Our price: $10.39 | You save: $2.60
...available here...
Roscoe Wizzle notices many things. For instance, the way really
weird situations can seem really normal. But the one thing that
Roscoe somehow doesn't notice is that he is transmogrifying into a
giant bug. (Roscoe quickly recounts the possible reasons for this
oversight, beginning with "1. I don't spend much time looking into a
mirror. Why should I? I am only ten years old.") What's worse is
that this transformation might have something to do with the way
kids have been disappearing from Roseville. Sit back and let Roscoe
tell the tale, and--in between hearing about Roscoe's dad the cymbal
tester and why an almost 74-year-old secretary became a jujitsu
black belt--you'll surely find out. David Elliott, all wry wit,
seems to have had quite a good time with his debut novel. (Ages 7 to
10)

New from Tamora Pierce
"Squire (Protector of the Small, No 3)"
Tamora Pierce
Our price: $12.76 | You save: $3.19
...available here...
In the third book of Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series,
14-year-old Keladry of Mindelan is ready to begin training to be a
squire after undergoing four grueling years as the first girl
officially educated as a page. Disappointed at first that Lady
Alanna (whom we first met in the Song of the Lioness Quartet series)
does not choose her, Kel is delighted when gruff, good-natured Lord
Raoul takes her on. She is stoutly loyal, strong, independent, and
honest, yet has very real fears and weaknesses. "Squire" is a
rousing tale of chivalry and heroism that any reader will be sorely
challenged to put down. (Ages 12 and older)

Iron Ring." Packed with humor and wisdom, and even a moral or two
(although Alexander is far from sanctimonious), each story follows a

duty to honor. This collection is guaranteed to enthrall readers of

"Jakarta Missing"
Jane Kurtz
...find more here and order.
"It is a poor life in which there is no fear," Dakar's adventurous
father likes to remind his two daughters. Before 12-year-old Dakar and
her family moved to North Dakota from Kenya, her fears took the shape
of charging elephants, muggings, blind beggars, and deadly cholera. In
the American Midwest, she is leery of telephones, the banister in her
unfamiliar two-story house, and most of all, that her older sister,
Jakarta, who stayed back in Kenya, may not be safe. Dakar is the star
of Jane Kurtz's delightful, original novel "Jakarta Missing," an
unusually rich journey into the extraordinary mind of a young girl who
handles culture shock (among other things!) with humor, grace, and
courage. (Ages 10 and older)

Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa
Anne Gutman

Not even an impromptu bath in the bathroom sink (after an unfortunate orange juice incident) dampens a young pup's excitement at her very first solo flight in this thoroughly charming picture book by Anne Gutman and illustrator Georg Hallensleben. This is the perfect book for any youngster who's about to go on a plane ride, or anyone else, for that matter. Luckily for us, this title and its companion "Gaspard on Vacation" mark the start of what promises to be a delightful series. (Ages 2 to 6)
"The Tiger Rising"
Kate Dicamillo
...find more here and order.
Kate DiCamillo's first novel "Because of Winn-Dixie" won a Newbery Honor in 2000 for the no-nonsense charm and wisdom of its down-home young heroine, Opal. Also set in Florida, "The Tiger Rising" is more of a short story in scope, the tale of 12-year-old Rob Horton who finds a caged tiger in the woods behind the Kentucky Star Motel where he lives with his dad. Spurred by the tiger, events collide to break Rob out of his silent introspection, to form a new friendship with a city girl and a new understanding with his father, and most importantly, to lighten his heart. This novel is about cages--the consequences of escape as well as imprisonment. The story and symbolism are clear as a bell, and the emotions ring true. (Ages 9 and older)

Michael Hoeye

Little did he know that this unexpected visit by the lovely, flustered aviatrix would be the beginning of a dangerous adventure. After Ms. Perflinger's sudden disappearance, Hermux (infatuated and intrigued) is determined to rescue her. Before long he is embroiled in fur-raising encounters and ominous developments. First-time author Michael Hoeye's exquisitely crafted, somewhat old-fashioned romp is deliciously clever and satisfyingly suspenseful. (Ages 10 and older)

A 5-year-old Tomie worries over the health of his baby sister, learns to read in one weekend (with a pilfered schoolbook), and helps his father pave the new driveway (to a too-fine polish!). In the spirit of his earlier memoirs, the Newbery Honor-winning "26 Fairmount Avenue" and "Here We All Are," author Tomie dePaola recounts the (mostly) serene days between the end of kindergarten and the beginning of first grade. DePaola's folksy black-and-white drawings and silhouettes wittily capture the details of life at 26 Fairmount Avenue. A wonderful read-aloud. (Ages 7 to 11)
