New from the Stinky Cheese Guys

"Baloney (Henry P.)" Jon Scieszka Our price: $12.79 | You save: $3.20
      ...available here...
In Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's latest picture book, alien Henry P. Baloney is at grave risk for Permanent Lifelong Detention from his teacher unless he comes up with one excellent excuse for being late to class. Remarkably, as Scieszka reports in his afterword, when he received and decoded the transmission of this fabricated story (directly from deep space, mind you), it was written in a variety of Earth languages, including Finnish, Swahili, Latvian, Esperanto, and Inuktitut (decoder included). Go figure. Runaway rocket ships and hungry space creatures, anyone? (Ages 5 to 9)

"Waffle" Chris Raschka Our price: $12.80 | You save: $3.20
      ...available here...
Waffle is worried. He worries, he wonders, he wishes, he waits... he even waffles. But will he ever work a wonder within and be brave enough to fly? For every child who has ever wavered in the face of a dreaded next step in life, Waffle's the fellow to hold your hand. He knows how it is. He's been there, and he's conquered his fears. This curious, almost freaky little book from the ingenious Caldecott Honor artist Chris Raschka ("Yo! Yes?" and "Can't Sleep") is all about that moment before taking the plunge. Raschka's ability to communicate emotion in a single brushstroke is as uncanny as ever. (Ages 4 and older)

"The Transmogrification of Roscoe Wizzle" David Elliott Our price: $10.39 | You save: $2.60
      ...available here...
Roscoe Wizzle notices many things. For instance, the way really weird situations can seem really normal. But the one thing that Roscoe somehow doesn't notice is that he is transmogrifying into a giant bug. (Roscoe quickly recounts the possible reasons for this oversight, beginning with "1. I don't spend much time looking into a mirror. Why should I? I am only ten years old.") What's worse is that this transformation might have something to do with the way kids have been disappearing from Roseville. Sit back and let Roscoe tell the tale, and--in between hearing about Roscoe's dad the cymbal tester and why an almost 74-year-old secretary became a jujitsu black belt--you'll surely find out. David Elliott, all wry wit, seems to have had quite a good time with his debut novel. (Ages 7 to 10)

      New from Tamora Pierce

"Squire (Protector of the Small, No 3)" Tamora Pierce Our price: $12.76 | You save: $3.19
      ...available here...
In the third book of Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series, 14-year-old Keladry of Mindelan is ready to begin training to be a squire after undergoing four grueling years as the first girl officially educated as a page. Disappointed at first that Lady Alanna (whom we first met in the Song of the Lioness Quartet series) does not choose her, Kel is delighted when gruff, good-natured Lord Raoul takes her on. She is stoutly loyal, strong, independent, and honest, yet has very real fears and weaknesses. "Squire" is a rousing tale of chivalry and heroism that any reader will be sorely challenged to put down. (Ages 12 and older)

Packed with humor and wisdom, and even a moral or two (although Alexander is far from sanctimonious), each story follows a hero as he embarks on a quest--one through mythic Greece to escape a death sentence, another through medieval China in search of a utopian kingdom, and a third through ancient India to fulfill his duty to honor. This collection is guaranteed to enthrall readers of all ages. (Ages 9 and older)

"It is a poor life in which there is no fear," Dakar's adventurous father likes to remind his two daughters. Before 12-year-old Dakar and her family moved to North Dakota from Kenya, her fears took the shape of charging elephants, muggings, blind beggars, and deadly cholera. In the American Midwest, she is leery of telephones, the banister in her unfamiliar two-story house, and most of all, that her older sister, Jakarta, who stayed back in Kenya, may not be safe. Dakar is the star of Jane Kurtz's delightful, original novel "Jakarta Missing," an unusually rich journey into the extraordinary mind of a young girl who handles culture shock (among other things!) with humor, grace, and courage. Not even an impromptu bath in the bathroom sink (after an unfortunate orange juice incident) dampens a young pup's excitement at her very first solo flight in this thoroughly charming picture book by Anne Gutman and illustrator Georg Hallensleben. This is the perfect book for any youngster who's about to go on a plane ride, or anyone else, for that matter. "The Tiger Rising"
      Kate Dicamillo
      ...find more here and order.

Kate DiCamillo's first novel "Because of Winn-Dixie" won a Newbery Honor in 2000 for the no-nonsense charm and wisdom of its down-home young heroine, Opal. Also set in Florida, "The Tiger Rising" is more of a short story in scope, the tale of 12-year-old Rob Horton who finds a caged tiger in the woods behind the Kentucky Star Motel where he lives with his dad. Spurred by the tiger, events collide to break Rob out of his silent introspection, to form a new friendship with a city girl and a new understanding with his father, and most importantly, to lighten his heart. This novel is about cages--the consequences of escape as well as imprisonment. The story and symbolism are clear as a bell, and the emotions ring true. (Ages 9 and older)

Hermux Tantamoq--a polite, intelligent mouse and talented watchmaker--had never seen a beautiful watch so badly treated as the one Ms. Linka Perflinger brought into his shop. After Ms. Perflinger's sudden disappearance, Hermux (infatuated and intrigued) is determined to rescue her. Before long he is embroiled in fur-raising encounters and ominous developments. First-time author Michael Hoeye's exquisitely crafted, somewhat old-fashioned romp is deliciously clever and satisfyingly suspenseful. (Ages 10 and older)

      WHAT WE'RE READING, POSTED 8 MAY 2001

From the Newbery Honor-winning author of "Ella Enchanted"

      "The Two Princesses of Bamarre"
      Gail Carson Levine
      ...available here
After stealing the hearts of middle-graders with her delightful Newbery Honor-winning Cinderella retelling, "Ella Enchanted," Gail Carson Levine now creates a fairy tale of her own and gives it a characteristic grrrl-power twist. Twelve-year-old Addie admires her older sister Meryl, who aspires to rid the kingdom of Bamarre of gryphons, specters, and ogres. Addie, on the other hand, is fearful even of spiders and depends on Meryl for courage and protection. Eventually, however, the younger sister prevails in encounters with tricky specters (spiders too), and outwits a wickedly personable dragon in this gripping adventure story touched with romance. Fantasy fans, rejoice! (Ages 10 to 14)

      New from Lloyd Alexander

      "The Gawgon and The Boy"
      Lloyd Alexander
      ...available here
Eleven-year-old David nearly dies of pneumonia. But all that bed rest would have been worth it if it meant he could avoid Rittenhouse Academy for a stretch! Alas, he doesn't get off so easily. David is to have a tutor. Not only that, but his stern, elderly Aunt Annie volunteers for the job: "In a tone that made me think of the Almighty commanding Abraham to sacrifice young Isaac, she said: 'Give me the boy.'" This horrible old Gorgon (Aunt Rosie translation: "Gawgon"), however, proves to be David's perfect foil, an ingenious mentor who so impresses him that she begins to co-star in the time-hopping, globe-trotting adventure stories he writes. "The Gawgon and The Boy" delights readers with excellent period details, hysterical dialogue, and authentic 11-year-old imaginings from Lloyd Alexander, winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. (Ages 10 and older)

      From the Creators of "Cook-a-Doodle-Do"
"And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon"
      Janet Stevens
      ...available here
Many people know the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," but has anyone ever thought about what happens each night after it's read? The dish runs away with the spoon, and, presumably, they come back later, otherwise the rhyme couldn't go on without them. But one night, when the dish and spoon take off, they simply don't return! Susan Stevens Crummel picks up where the nursery rhyme leaves off in this witty, entertaining romp. Young readers will "laugh to see such sport," as characters from fairy tales and Mother Goose mingle, make puns, and occasionally join forces to find the wandering tableware. The priceless facial expressions and lively scenes by Caldecott Honor artist Janet Stevens invite readers to linger on each page. (Ages 5 to 8) SUMMER TRAVEL

On the occasion of Froggy's parents' anniversary, it's time for the family to head for Chez Yum, a hoity-toity restaurant with tablecloths and flower-filled vases. This means trouble. Froggy only has a few rules to remember--"Be neat, be quiet, and don't put your feet on the table"--but it's absolutely not that simple. An ample dose of Froggy's trademark sound effects and "burger and flies" jokes will have youngsters giggling out loud at the oh-so-familiar contortions of an irrepressible frog faced with the dreaded Fancy Dinner. For Fans of Captain Underpants...
"The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton"
      James Proimos
      ...available here
We know James Proimos from his eccentric, cartoonish, and completely wonderful picture-book debut "Joe's Wish." In this equally odd, splendidly quirky chapter book (written in a comic-strip-frame Captain Underpants-style), he offers six hilarious stories from "More Fun than a Bag of Marshmallows" to "The Pirates Meet the Runny Nose." It all starts when Momma Mutton opens her front door and finds that a baby has been left on her front step... a baby sheep. "But Momma's weak eyes and warm heart kept her from even noticing." She names her new son Johnny Mutton, and the rest is history--from the first day at school to a spelling bee. This all may sound silly to you, but peals of laughter from your 8-year-olds (yes, and you, too) are virtually guaranteed. (Ages 5 to 9)

"Mr. Gumpy's Outing" Now a Board Book!
      "Mr. Gumpy's Outing Board Book"
      John Burningham
      ...available here
Mr. Gumpy decides it's a perfect day for an outing in his little boat. Apparently, plenty of others think so, too. First some children ask to join him, then a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep... Soon, Mr. Gumpy's boat is precariously full, and there's nowhere for anyone else to go--but overboard! This mild mariner takes everything in stride, though, and his guests are soon bellying up to a nice tea. John Burningham earned the Kate Greenaway Medal, an ALA Notable Children's Book Award, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for "Mr. Gumpy's Outing," and it's no wonder. This gifted author-illustrator creates a vision of glorious summer with deeply textured, sometimes only suggested, drawings. Young readers will never tire of this gentle, comforting storybook. (Ages 2 to 6)
