    POSTED 1 AUGUST 2001

"The Da Capo Jazz and Blues Lover's Guide to the United States" Christiane Bird Our price: $14.00 | You save: $3.50
    ...more info here.
Calling all jazz and blues lovers (and that includes those recent Ken Burns-inspired fans): this book is for you. With this volume, a trove of historical information and fully updated guide to the contemporary jazz and blues scene in 25 U.S. cities and the Mississippi Delta, you can tour the landmarks and visit the legends without even having to leave home (although it's clearly a lot more fun to go).

"Western Mexico: A Traveller's Treasury (3rd Edition)" Tony Burton Our price: $15.95
    ...more info here.
"A Traveller's Treasury" is an apt subtitle for this guidebook to the Western Mexico that lies beyond tourist cities like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Burton has good credentials--a geographer who's lived in Mexico for 17 years, he's done a lot of back-road traveling in search of hidden Mexico. He's also fond of history, geology, archeology, and ecology, so each of the places covered in this personal and idiosyncratic collection of favorites is exceedingly well-described.

"The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2001 (Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, 2001)" Bob Sehlinger Our price: $13.59 | You save: $3.40
    ...more info here.
While Walt Disney World stands for fun, fun, fun, let's face it--it comes at a hefty cost: long waits, huge crowds, and high prices. "When it comes to Walt Disney World," writes Sehlinger, "you either need a plan or a frontal lobotomy." As the huge complex of theme parks has grown to roughly the size of Boston, so has this guide, from less than 200 pages to over 700. While that may seem formidable, every one is chock-full of invaluable information for making the most of your time and money, with the least amount of hassle. Sehlinger is an excellent guide--witty and readable, and he and his research crew have done a commendable job figuring out the most efficient and economical ways to spend your time at Walt Disney World.

"Frommers Exploring America by RV, 1st Edition" Shirley Slater Our price: $13.59 | You save: $3.40
    ...more info here.
Award-winning travel writers Shirley Slater and Harry Basch had tried just about every mode of transportation known to humans in their travels through 186 countries, but it wasn't until they rode in an RV in 1991 that they found their passion. In the decade that followed they racked up 120,000 miles, avoided freeways whenever possible, and focused on discovering the offbeat and the best of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While "Exploring America by RV" is aimed particularly at novices--with detailed advice on buying and renting RVs as well as tips and hints on such things as what to look for in campsites, the miracle of bubble wrap, and "how to give backing-up directions without destroying your marriage"--it also outlines 10 excursions through the U.S., Canada, and Baja with enough unusual stops along the way that the book is a veritable gold mine.

"World Stompers: A Global Travel Manifesto" Brad Olsen Our price: $17.95
    ...more info here.
Brad Olsen has four recommendations for today's college graduates: work abroad, study abroad, volunteer abroad, travel abroad. Olsen took his own three-year, self-financed, solo journey to 28 countries on 5 continents after his graduation from business school, and "World Stompers," now in its fifth incarnation, is his travel manifesto for other intrepid young people willing to travel for extended periods on the cheap.

    POSTED 17 JULY 2001

"Stuck at the Airport: A Traveler's Survival Guide" Harriet Baskas Our price: $10.40 | You save: $2.60
    ...more info here.
Your flight at Pittsburgh International Airport has been delayed for hours. You've been to the food court (twice) and you've just bought another magazine. Wouldn't it have been nice if you'd known that there was an in-airport health club with aerobic machines and a sauna? Well, if you had a copy of the aptly named Stuck at the Airport, Harriet Baskas's compilation of unexpected attractions and services at 54 airports around the world, you would. Arranged alphabetically, each entry lists dining, shopping, and sightseeing options, as well as the best spots to nap, freshen up, and plug in your laptop. While some of the information is basic, most of it is surprisingly informative.

"Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro's Cuba" Christopher P. Baker Our price: $26.00
    ...more info here.
"Mi Moto Fidel should be in the briefcase of every man in midlife. The erotically charged adventure through the forbidden island by a man on a motorcycle in his 40s is a fantastic fantasy realized. With its edgy candor, it captures a whole receding time and place with prickly cinematic takes, and makes a map of a hidden world, and of the anima of its soul." --Richard Bangs, author of "The Lost River"

"Cooking in Paradise: Culinary Vacations Around the World" Joel Naftali Our price: $12.76 | You save: $3.19
    ...more info here.
Have you heard about cooking vacation programs? For this incredibly insightful book Joel and Lee Naftali researched over 150 of them from locations in France, Italy, Asia, Mexico, Austria, Brazil, Greece, Ireland, Morocco, Spain, and Turkey. You'll find contact, cost, and accommodation information, a full description and feedback from former students for each cooking course, as well as ideas to entertain family and traveling companions while the cook studies. The inclusion of recipes from programs described in the book is a feature we're enjoying.

    PETER GREENBERG, AMERICA'S TRAVEL DETECTIVE

"The Travel Detective: How to Get the Best Service and the Best Deals from Airlines, Hotels, Cruise Ships, and Car Rental Agencies" Peter Greenberg Our price: $12.76 | You save: $3.19
    ...more info here.
Because it seems that everyone who is talking travel these days is either talking about his book or at least one of the issues addressed in it, we asked Peter Greenberg to comment on his bestseller.
"Five years ago, there was a seething undercurrent of anger among most people who traveled. Today, times are different. It's no longer seething and it's no longer an undercurrent: people are outright angry about their travel experiences--but we still love to travel. It's an interesting, and an often depressing, combination. I specifically wrote The Travel Detective to address that frustration, to deal with that anger. But I'm not doing anyone any good if I simply present the problems we already know of (and have experienced) if I don't also offer real-life, real-world, workable solutions. And that's what The Travel Detective is all about: how to beat the airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and rental car agencies at their own game, playing by their rules. I have focused on the process of travel, and in doing so, have found the ways to minimize so much of the abuse associated with traveling today. And, in that process, ways to save significant amounts of money. Many in the travel industry are angry with this book, not because I'm wrong, but because they don't like what I've said. As I continue to remind them, I don't work for them, and as long as they continue to be angry, I guess I must be doing something right." --Peter Greenberg

"The Riches of Paris: A Shopping and Touring Guide" Maribeth Clemente Our price: $15.96 | You save: $3.99
    ...more info here.
Maribeth Clemente did much of her research for "The Riches of Paris" while working as a shopping consultant in Paris and writing her first book, "The Chic Shopper's Guide to Paris." She can help you find the auctions, the flea markets, the antique shops, and the wonderful tucked-away fashion boutiques of the Left Bank, Bastille, and Republique better than just about anybody. In this window to all that Paris has to offer the shopaholic are thorough descriptions of each shop and its products, plus all the details you'd expect to find--addresses, phone numbers, opening hours, Web sites, and price ranges. She even gives you great tips on how to handle what will surely be your biggest challenge: packing the suitcase.

"Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World" Rita Golden Gelman Our price: $18.40 | You save: $4.60
    ...more info here.
When Rita Golden Gelman traveled to Mexico during a two-month separation from her husband, she hoped to satisfy an old craving for adventure and, in the process, rejuvenate herself and her marriage. Little did she know it was the beginning of a new life, not just as a divorcée, but as a nomad of the world. Since 1986, Gelman has had no permanent address and no possessions except those she can carry. She travels without a plan, guided by instinct, serendipitous opportunities, and a remarkable ability to connect with people. At first her family and friends accused her of running away, but Gelman knew she had embarked on a journey of self-discovery and a way of life that is inspiring and enviable. We know Gelman is not your typical middle-aged housewife from L.A. when, on that first trip to Mexico, she randomly...

"Departures and Arrivals" Eric Newby Our price: $18.36 | You save: $4.59
    ...more info here.
Eric Newby got the travel bug from his parents, who would leave him with a housekeeper for months at a time when they went off to market their fashion "productions." But he took the habit farther afield and for far longer than anyone could have imagined, and in the process developed an audience devoted to his witty travel tales. Now in his 80s, the venerable English travel writer still pedals a cycle or bounces across a desert on a jeep whenever the opportunity presents itself, for, as he notes, it might well not recur. In this selection of short pieces, Newby focuses on his most enduring memories of departures and arrivals, beginning with his regular walks "up to the bend and back" with his mother in his childhood village of Barnes, England. With abundant detail and his trademark self-deprecating humor, he takes his readers on one of the last journeys of the Orient Express...
