TV has taken up the slack in keeping the musical (dead on the big
screen) in front of audiences. This 2001 adaptation of the smash
1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show, drawn from James
Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Tales of the South Pacific,"
is an admirable case in point. The production was a labor of love
for Glenn Close, who is clearly too old to play "cockeyed optimist"
Nellie Forbush but who throws herself....

the work of her grandfather, one of the unsung giants of animation
and film technology. Ub Iwerks (1901-1971) was a teenager in Kansas

Charming tale of a good witch (Angela Lansbury) who helps out three
children in World War II England. Star David Tomlinson reteams with
his "Mary Poppins" director Robert Stevenson with solid
success. Winner of the Oscar for Visual Effects (and nominated for
five others), the film has been shortened over the years. This
30th-anniversary edition is restored to the original length, and the
DVD contains cartoon shorts, a still-frame art gallery, and
behind-the-scenes coverage.

The King Arthur legend gets the Disney treatment. Wolfgang Reitherman,
the director of the original "Winnie the Pooh" shorts and "The Jungle
Book," keeps the keen visual styles of those films, though the "Stone"
script hasn't aged as well as other Disney classics. The DVD contains
cartoon shorts, a still-frame art and photo gallery, and a 1957
half-hour TV special on magic hosted by Walt Disney.

With only one major star (Denzel Washington), an appealing cast of
fresh unknowns, and a winning emphasis on substance over
self-indulgent style, Boaz Yakin's "Remember the Titans" is, like
"Rudy" before it, a football movie that will be fondly remembered by
