Sullivan: I want this picture to be a ... document. I want to hold a
mirror up to life. I want this to be a picture of dignity ... a true
canvas of the suffering of humanity.
LeBrand: But with a little sex in it.
--Dialogue from 1942's "Sullivan's Travels," the inspiration behind
Joel and Ethan Coen's "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

"The Natural"
...more here
Critics of the movie adaptation of Bernard Malamud's "The Natural" point to the grandstanding finale, which departs sharply from the novel. But what movie audiences needed was a hero, and Robert Redford's gilded incarnation of Roy Hobbs delivered. Barry Levinson's film is All-American mythmaking at its finest, and 17 years later the charms of the film are more evident, starting with the rich supporting cast. This beautiful (and influential) film should have won the technical Oscars it was nominated for but did not win: Caleb Deschanel's cinematography, Mel Bourne and Angelo Graham's art direction, and (especially) Randy Newman's score are superb.
