Circle of Trees

BETH - Birch

The month of Beth begins on December 24th and ends on January 20th. The Birch is the Tree of birth, inception, initiation, discipline and sacrifice of the Inner Self for the Outer. Also that of the force of Wild, Un-tamed Nature. Connected to Pentagrams, Mountains, and The Unconscious Self. Symbolized by the Egyptian Asar and the Celtic Cernunnos - the horned one, said to be the Soul of Lugh.

LUIS - Rowan

The month of Luis begins on January 21st and ends on February 17th. The Tree of divination, protection, "luck". The Rowan was considered the Tree of Life, and magic fires were made from it. The Rowan was also associated with divination. Connected to Horses, the Sea, and The Expansion of Self. Symbolized by Manannan Mac Lir - the Son of the Sea and Keeper of the Treasures of the Sea.

NION - Ash

The month of Nion begins on February 18th and ends on March 17th. The Tree of Druidism, Runes, Incantations, Music. Druidic wands were made of Ash. The Celtic word for Ash was Iundius. Connected to White Hounds, Ibis/Cranes, Underground Rivers and The Opening of Ways. Symbolized by Gwydion (Ogmios-Thoth-Hermes) - the inventor of Rune-Magick, and also Gwyn the Conductor of Souls (Anup/Anubis).

FFEARN/VEARN - Alder

The month of Vearn/Ffearn begins on March 18th and ends on April 14th. The Alder is a coloful Tree - the trunks change from white to reddish-yellow after felling (the similarity to blood led to the tradition that felling Alders was unlucky); the barks produce red and black dyes; the young shoots yellow; the fresh wood pink and the catkins green. This Tree that represents 'That Which Is and Is Not'. Connected to Poetry, Hills, Snakes (Sky-Serpent), Butterflies, and The Fool. Symbolized by Gwion - son of Bran, and Amergin - the Master Poet of the Danaans.

SAILLE - Willow

The month of Saille begins on April 15th and ends on May 12th. The Willow is the Tree of Witchcraft and The Moon. The bark of the Willow is where modern asprin is derived from. Connected to White Birds, Mist, and Illusion. Symbolized by Arianrhod (Aradia) - daughter of the Moon.

UATH - Hawthorne

The month of Uath begins on May 13th and ends on June 9th. The Tree of Herbal Magick and Joy. Uath means literally "cave". The Hawthorne is said to be very powerful magically - its flowers are white, followed by scarlet false fruits. Connected to Flowers, Cats, Owls, and White Blossoms. Symbolized by Bloudewedd/Branwyn (The May Queen), Persephone (who returns from the Underworld), and Bast (Egyptian Goddess of Joy).

DUIR - Oak

The month of Duir begins on June 10th and ends on July 7th. This month is also the month of the Hedge-Rose ("if there's a bustle in your..."). This is the Tree of skills, nobility, and the sacrifice of the Outer Self for the Inner. The Oak is known for its strength and durability and is the most important magical plant in Europe. Connected to Lions, Eagles/Falcons, Corn, Roses. Symbolized by Lugh or Llew-law-Gyffes (literally the Lion with the Steady Hand), and Apollo-Balder-Ra. It is said that Lugh took the form of an Eagle after he was murdered and returned to life.

TINNE - Holly-Oak/Evergreen

The month of Tinne begins on July 8th and ends on August 4th. The Tree of Thunder, Fire and Iron. The Holly-Oak, not Holly, is the original tree of Tinne. The Holly-Oak is the evergreen equivalent of the Oak, and even the word "Tinne" means "Evergreen" in both Celtic and Norse languages. It is connected to Wolves, Weapons and Hawks. Symbolized by Tannus, Nuada (Apuat) - God of War.

COLL - Hazel

The month of Coll begins on August 5th and ends on September 1st. The Hazel is the Tree of Knowledge. Connected to Salmon, Scales, Wells and The Judging of Souls. Symbolized by Fion MacColl, Aengus Mac Oc, Chonsu (an Egyptian youth god who symbolized the ripened crops ready for harvest), and Unefer (a form of Asar - 'beautiful one').

MUIN - Vine or Blackberry

The month of Muin begins on September 2nd and ends on September 29th. The Tree that represents the Powers of Earth and Resurrection. In areas where the Vine does not grow, then the Blackberry reigns. Blackberry picking is the last ritualistic seasonal collecting of wild plant food still practiced in industrialized Europe. Connected to Bulls, Geese, Crows, Tombs and Cornucopias. Symbolized by Bran (Kronos), Dionysus, and Geb.

GORT - Ivy

The month of Gort begins on September 30th and ends on October 27th. The Ivy is the Tree of Reconciliation. The Ivy is respected as a magical plant protecting against evil spirits and symbolizing fidelity, however, whole plant is poisonous. Connected to Bears, Boars, Lions (female) and Blood. Symbolized by Garbh Ogh (Artemis) - the Huntress, and Sakhmet - the Lioness.

NGETAL - Guelder Rose or Reed

The month of Ngetal begins on October 28th and ends on November 24th. This Tree is the Tree of Doom. The Guelder Rose (also known as the Wild Cranberry) is used to treat uterine disorders, though the fresh berries are poisonous. Reeds are associated with the Protective Goddess Buto (the Uraeus serpent). This month is connected to Ravens, Vultures, Wind, Storms, Scorpions and Serpents. Symbolized by The Morrigan, Hecate, Rhiannon, and Neb-Het - 'Lady of the (Great) House' also known as Nephthys who was represented by a black cat or vulture.

RUIS - Elder

The month of Ruis begins on November 25th and ends on December 22nd. The Elder is a very Sacred Tree, the Tree of Life/Death/Rebirth - spirits are believed to dwell within it. This month is connected to the White Mare/Roebuck/Cow, Pearl Barley, and the Wave of the Ocean that Takes Back. Symbolized by the White Goddess (Danu, Anu, Nut), the Creatrix of the Great Cauldron.
