NEW AND NOTABLE

"Another Late Night" Zero 7 Our price: $13.99 | You save: $2.99
...available here.
On the heels of their 2001 debut, "Simple Things," Zero 7 have put their stamp on the "Another Late Night" series, coming up with an uncommonly groovy mix. Featuring deep strains of dub and hip-hop, it's a melancholy lullaby that sounds perfect whether your night is finally ending or just beginning.

"Next Level" George Acosta Our price: $14.99 | You save: $3.99
...available here.
It's not exactly retro, but George Acosta's new release, "Next Level," borrows from some well-seasoned wax, adding a dash of the old to his futuristic mix. It's a great party record for those who treat the dawn like a figment of their imaginations.

"After the Playboy Mansion [Uptempo]" Dimitri from Paris Our price: $20.88 | You save: $1.10
...available here.
With "A Night at the Playboy Mansion," Dimitri from Paris put together an irresistible double-disc mix featuring his eclectic brand of new wave/disco. After expanding his musical range even further on 2000's sprawling "Disco Forever," Dimitri revisits his breakout record with "After the Playboy Mansion," a more laidback but equally tasty anthology culled from his mountainous wax collection.

Goodbye House, Hello Downtempo "Goodbye Country-Hello Nightclub" Groove Armada
...available here.
Tom Findlay and Andy Cato, the duo known as Groove Armada, are a couple of dance music's most accomplished tightrope walkers, teasing their audience with club-ready dance music while refusing to fall completely into BPM overdrive. On their latest, "Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)," Findlay and Cato let themselves land in the soft, springy net of full-on downtempo. While they don't withhold an opportunity to dance, serving up a healthy plate of dub beats and funkadelic tempos, the dial is noticeably turned down while the music slinks and slithers along in no particular hurry.

Altogether Now "The Altogether" Orbital
...available here.
Typically energetic and adventurous, Orbital's latest record, "The Altogether," slips through dark rhythms and winding tunnels of experimentation while mixing up breakbeat, gothic folk, and hard-nosed trance-techno. It's a double-disc stew of orchestral dance music fit for either a nice pair of headphones or giant, belly-rumbling woofers.

All-Natural Trance "Naturalized" Dave Ralph
...available here.
Dave Ralph's brand of trance manages to be both minimal and densely ambient. When he does drop a big rise on you, the beats threaten to drop through the floor even while the melody escalates through the roof. His latest double CD, "Naturalized," further enhances his reputation as one of the world's most popular DJs while stetching his take on techno out into darker and groovier environs.

EDITOR'S CHOICE

A Stunning Second "Cassidy" Bows
...available here.
The first Bows record, the amazing "Blush," was downbeat trip-hop with an ambient twist, as Luke Sutherland (head of the dearly departed group Long Fin Killie) teamed up with Danish singer Signe Høirup Wille-Jørgensen to make sad and beautiful music. As good as it was, however, it was just a warm-up for their latest, "Cassidy," which is nothing short of a revelatory breakthrough in downtempo dance. You owe it to yourself and your less-informed friends to check out Bows, who inject a truly lovely dream-pop element into their songs about exasperation, nuance, and bliss.

THE ORB

The Doctor Is In The Orb's Dr. Alex Patterson, a master of the remix, applies his own subversive, slippery-beat science while reimagining song structure to an endlessly fascinating degree. On "Auntie Aubrey's Excursions, Volume 1" and "Volume 2," Patterson uses music from Yello, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, and others to create a wacky pastiche of chill tunes and endless blue-room invention.

"BACK TO MINE"

Morcheeba, "Back to Mine" The stellar mix series "Back to Mine" rolls on with yet another choice late-night groove session, as head Morcheeber Paul Godfrey delivers an eclectic mix of personal favorites ranging from funk and soul to more modern down-tempo styles. It's just one in a series of great titles under the "Back to Mine" banner; all are tasty additions to anyone's late night/early morning listening. Have a look at some other installments:
