      "Azul" Cristian
      ...order.
Groomed for fame from the age of 5, Mexican pop star Cristian is the son of Mexican actress Veronica Castro. He's got good genes and on his latest, "Azul," he lives up to his famous heritage.

      "Union" Puya
      ...order.
Puerto Rican metalheads Puya return with more of their electrified salsa-rock hybrid, adding a slice of Spanglish social consciousness to their groovy hard rock.

      "Yo Por Ti" Olga Tanon
      ...order.
The Madonna of merengue, Puerto Rican powerhouse Olga Tanon is back with another fierce album. Known for her rich, soulful voice, Tanon is one of the dance-floor queens who have elevated the merengue to an emotionally expressive art form.

"Mas De Mi Alma" Marco Antonio Solis
      ...order.
Michoacán native Marco Antonio Solis is one of the most important figures in Latin music, and his latest collection, "Mas de Mi Alma" continues to cement his reputation as a living legend of Tejano and Mexican music. It's elegant, graceful, romantic music that takes its cues from both traditional Mexican music and adult pop.

      LATIN MUSIC 101

"Best of Latin America: Change the Rules [IMPORT]" Various Artists
      ...order.
This compilation is that rare beast: an excellent introduction to the huge genre that is Latin American music. It's a general collection in that it includes all the requisite rhythms: salsa, son, cumbia, and tango. But the selections here are anything but obvious--they're judicious and juicy. Beginning with Joe Arroyo's excellent "La Noche" and including Estudiantina Invasora's mournful son "La Tarde," this is a topnotch collection.

      ROMANCE ON THE DANCE FLOOR

      "Tango" Carlos Saura
      ...order.
Carlos Saura's 1999 film "Tango" is a color-drenched ode to the gorgeous Argentinian dance. Yes, there's a romantic storyline, but this movie is really about movement: its passion, elegance, and rhythm. A great introduction to how beautiful the tango can be. "Tango Bar" Jaurena
      ...order.
The tango is one of Latin America's most beloved rhythms. This superior collection was created by Uruguayan bandoneon master Raul Jaurena, and it features his own work with a tango group. They perform standards composed by the likes of Carlos Gardel and Mariano Mores as well as more modern, intelligently experimental tracks.

      AFRO-PERUVIAN SOUL

"Soul of Black Peru" Afro-Peruvian Classics
      ...order.
Though Peru is best known for its Incan heritage, it also has a vibrant African population that produces some of the most beautiful, supple songs on the continent. The strong compilation "Soul of Black Peru" introduces outsiders to the mournful elegance of coastal Peruvian rhythms.

      "Susana Baca" Susana Baca
      ...order.
One of the stars of the "Soul of Black Peru" compilation, Susana Baca is also a leader of the modern Afro-Peruvian musical school. Baca's luminous alto imbues these poetic classics with still more shimmer. And the rhythms here are loaded with subtle longing. A must-have.

Mexican-American superstars Los Lobos can always be counted upon to do something interesting. Their spacy, Latino-lounge collaboration " Pepe and Irene" with Beastie Boy affiliate and wigged-out keyboardist Money Mark is great, humorous, and funky. It's part of "Red Hot + Latin: Silencio = Muerte," a great compilation for a great cause. And Amazon.com has an exclusive free download of this track. Download " Pepe and Irene" now.

    CUBAN NUEVA TROVA

In the 1960s, a new school of Cuban songwriting emerged: it was called the nueva trova, and it reinvigorated traditional Cuban rhythms with politically charged and intensely personal lyrics. The leaders of the movement, Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes, are among the best songwriters Latin America has ever produced. "Cancionero" is a great introduction to Milanes, and "Cuban Classics: Canciones Urgentes" surveys Rodriguez's extensive career.

"The Rough Guide to Merengue & Bachata [IMPORT]"

Merengue and bachata, rhythms born in the Dominican Republic, are surveyed on this excellent introductory collection, which features songs by Dominican superstars. Merengue's country cousin, bachata, gets equal billing, and the hypersynthesized merengue that dominates dance floors is refreshingly absent. Read more
