Critics of the movie adaptation of Bernard Malamud's "The Natural"
point to the grandstanding finale, which departs sharply from the
novel. But what 1984's movie audience needed was a hero, and Robert
Redford's gilded incarnation of Roy Hobbs delivered. This beautiful
(and influential) film should have won the technical Oscars® it
was nominated for but did not win: Caleb Deschanel's cinematography,
Mel Bourne and Angelo Graham's art direction, and (especially) Randy
Newman's score are superb.

...Score "The Mummy Returns" Alan Silvestri did the score to The Mummy Returns, not Jerry Goldsmith, who did the first one.
The Sinfonia of London Chorus and The Sinfonia of London Orchestra
accent the adventure as it is reborn with this great new score by
Silvestri in the latest incarnation of the MUMMY movie from
Decca Records. Order Here
Director Stephen Sommers is at the
helm
once more for The Mummy Returns, the eagerly anticipated sequel to
1999's
worldwide blockbuster The Mummy. Brendan Fraser reprises his role as
adventurer Rick O'Connell. Also returning are co-stars Rachel Weisz (as
Evelyn), John Hannah (as Evelyn's brother, Jonathan) and Arnold Vosloo
(as
Imhotep). The soundtrack includes the exclusive new song "Forever May
Not Be
Long Enough," performed by LIVE and co-written by Glen Ballard. The
score
was written by composer Alan Silvestri, and will be released May 1,
2001
from Decca Records.
Set in 1935, ten years after the events of The Mummy, a band of
treasure
hunters seeking artifacts to sell to the British Museum unearth the
remains
of the high priest Imhotep. Transported to London, Imhotep is
resurrected
and once more embarks on his quest for immortality. But another force
has
also been set loose in the world - one born of the darkest rituals of
ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When
these
two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance,
sending
Rick and Evelyn on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable
evil.
The Decca soundtrack album features the epic original score by Oscar,
Grammy
and Golden Globe nominee Alan Silvestri (Back To The Future, Forrest
Gump,
What Lies Beneath, The Mexican). It also includes a brand new track by
the
powerful rock band LIVE, whose four MCA/Radioactive albums have sold
millions of copies worldwide. The track, "Forever May Not Be Long
Enough,"
is co-written and produced by five-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard,
known
for his chart-topping successes with Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith,
Michael
Jackson and most recently the Dave Matthews Band. This track, played
over
the end credits of the film, is exclusively available on The Mummy
Returns
soundtrack album until LIVE's next studio album is released by
MCA/Radioactive on July 31.
Universal Pictures and Alphaville Productions present The Mummy
Returns, the
first blockbuster release of the summer. The film opens May 4 in
theaters
everywhere and features groundbreaking visual effects by the

Industrial Light & Magic.

ARTICLE: ENNIO MORRICONE
A Winner on All Counts... Except One
Ennio Morricone's score for "Malena" went relatively unnoticed until it was nominated for an Academy Award(R) for Best Score. Yet the award again eluded the esteemed score composer. Amazon.com contributor Jerry McCulley spoke with Morricone and captured Il Maestro philosophizing on the importance of score compositions in modern classical music, reflecting on his partnership with Italian filmmakers, and musing on his work ethic. ...more here.

An epic story of courage and revenge
set
against the splendor and barbarity of the Roman Empire, Ridley Scott's
Gladiator has been hailed as one of the best films of 2000 by critics
nationwide, and recently won the Golden Globe for Best Picture. The
original
soundtrack was released April 25, 2000 on Decca Records, and has
subsequently received a Golden Globe win for Best Original Score as
well as
Oscar and Grammy nominations for Best Score Soundtrack Album From a
Motion
Picture. On the heels of this acclaimed first release, Gladiator -
More
Music From the Motion Picture, is the official must-have companion to
the
original soundtrack, featuring music previously unavailable from
Academy
Award winning composer Hans Zimmer and collaborator Lisa Gerrard. The
CD from Decca Records is now available .
A treat for Gladiator fans everywhere, this new companion CD contains
even
more spectacular music written for the film that was not featured on
the
original soundtrack. The album also contains classic dialogue from the
movie, which starred Russell Crowe in the pivotal leading role of
Maximus.
Crowe was recently nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor - Drama.
Added bonuses in the package include a Gladiator screen saver, as well
as
the international dance hit "Now We Are Free" (Maximus Mix), featuring
Lisa
Gerrard on vocals. Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard - having worked
together
for the first time on the original score -- once again display their
unique
collaborative talent for crafting majestic and powerful music The New
York
Times described as "a state of mind that isn't limited to one
generation."
The original Decca soundtrack album was a staple of Billboard's Top 200
and
Top Soundtracks Charts, and was the best-selling film score of 2000
having
sold one million units worldwide. Hans Zimmer is one of the most
prolific
composers in Hollywood who has penned scores to numerous films
including
Mission: Impossible 2, The Lion King, Rain Man and The Thin Red Line.
He
also scored Hannibal, the upcoming sequel to The Silence of the Lambs
and
Pearl Harbor. In late January, he was awarded with the Broadcast Film
Critic's Best Original Score trophy for Gladiator in addition to his
Golden
Globe win. Lisa Gerrard, formerly of the groundbreaking group Dead Can
Dance, burst upon the film scoring scene after composing music to The
Insider, which garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original
Score.

The Silence Is Broken With
HANNIBAL
Decca Records Releases Hans Zimmer Score From The Eagerly
Anticipated Sequel To The Silence Of The Lambs
Based on the best-selling novel by
Thomas
Harris, Hannibal is the eagerly anticipated sequel to The Silence of
the
Lambs - winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture.
Directed by
Ridley Scott, the film stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as the sinister Dr.
Hannibal Lecter and Julianne Moore as FBI Agent Clarice Starling. The
hauntingly romantic score was written by Academy Award winning composer
Hans
Zimmer, and is to be released February 6, 2001 from Decca Records.
Seven years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter escaped from custody
and
seven years since FBI Agent Clarice Starling interviewed him in a
maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. The doctor is now
at
large in Europe, pursuing his own interests, savoring the scents, the
essences of an unguarded world. But Starling has never forgotten her
encounters with Dr. Lecter - his seldom-used voice still haunts her
dreams.
Mason Verger remembers Dr. Lecter too, and is obsessed with revenge.
Verger
was Dr. Lecter's sixth victim, and, though hideously disfigured, has
survived. Verger soon realizes that in order to draw the doctor out
into
the open, he must use someone Lecter cannot resist as bait: Clarice
Starling.
Hannibal reunites acclaimed director Ridley Scott and Academy Award
winning
composer Hans Zimmer -- both of whom lent their talents to last year's
epic,
Gladiator. One of the most prolific composers in Hollywood, Zimmer has
garnered multiple Oscar nominations for his film scores -- including
Rain
Man and As Good As It Gets. His music for The Lion King earned him a
Grammy, a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Original Score. Most
recently,
his music for Gladiator won a Golden Globe Award and received a Grammy
nomination for Best Original Score.
"This is the best love theme I've ever written," Zimmer says of his
music
for Hannibal. "I keep telling everyone this is a romantic comedy, but
nobody believes me." In addition to Zimmer's score, the soundtrack
album
also includes a classic performance from Bach's "Goldberg Variations"
by
Glenn Gould and a dramatic, new mini-opera featuring 21-year-old
soprano
Danielle de Niese. Her career is off to a prodigious start with
operatic
debuts scheduled in Amsterdam, Paris and Tokyo, as well as engagements
with
the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony and an upcoming title
role
appearance at the Metropolitan Opera. As a finishing touch, three
tracks
feature the chilling voice of Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter himself!
A joint production of MGM, Universal Pictures and DEG, Hannibal opens
in
theaters everywhere on February 9, 2001 -- ten years after the release
of
The Silence of the Lambs. Hans Zimmer's hauntingly romantic score
perfectly
fits the mood of the film and dramatically recreates the excitement and
suspense of the screen. THE MEXICAN
MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE
INCLUDES ORIGINAL MUSIC COMPOSED BY ALAN SILVESTRI
PLUS CLASSIC HITS BY NANCY SINATRA, DEAN MARTIN AND
MEN WITHOUT HATS
CD RELEASED FEBRUARY 27, 2001 ON DECCA RECORDS
Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich)
and
Brad Pitt (Fight Club) star together for the first time in the romantic
action comedy The Mexican, also starring James Gandolfini (The
Sopranos).
The soundtrack for the film is a winning combination of original music
composed by Alan Silvestri, coupled with classic pop tracks spanning
the
past few decades. The CD will be released February 27, 2001 from Decca
Records in anticipation of one of the most talked about movies to open
this
spring.
Well suited for the film's fast-paced action, the free-wheeling,
Mexican-flavored soundtrack features original music by Alan Silvestri,
who
has composed film scores for such blockbusters as Back To The Future,
Forrest Gump and What Lies Beneath. Peppered with hits including Nancy
Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," Dean Martin's "You're
Nobody
'Til Somebody Loves You," War's "Why Can't We Be Friends" and Men
Without
Hats "Safety Dance," the record is as a rollicking good time as the
film.
In The Mexican, Brad Pitt stars as Jerry Welbach, a reluctant bagman
who has
been given two ultimatums. The first is from his mob boss to travel to
Mexico to retrieve a priceless antique pistol known as "the Mexican"...
or
to suffer the consequences. The second is from his girlfriend,
Samantha
(Julia Roberts), to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures
alive
and in trouble with Samantha is better than the more permanent
alternative,
so he heads south of the border.
Finding the pistol proves easy. Getting it home is another matter.
The
pistol supposedly carries a legendary curse - a legend Jerry is given
every
reason to believe, especially when Samantha is taken hostage by a hit
man
(James Gandolfini) to ensure the safe return of the pistol.
DreamWorks Pictures and Pistolero Productions presents The Mexican,
directed
by Gore Verbinski (Mouse Hunt).
