One of my students asked me to write her a song. I think that this was the first time that I had ever been asked to write something for someone. Since it was December and the semester was almost over, I knew that I would never see her again and actually it might be okay to do it. There's always been that fine line of professionalism in the student/teacher relationship, but in this case, since she was a good student and I knew my grading would not be compromised, I wrote this for her.

So Sunny, if you are reading this, I'd like to say that it's been a pleasure knowing you. Thirty years from now,(when you're my age) try to remember me. I will remember your smile from the third row of my 8 am class. Now that I have a song for you, I know that I cannot ever forget you.

Where do you want to go?

Sunny (1997)

I have known the deepest nights of winter
I have seen the face of frozen storms
And tho' my life is edging toward December
I still believe the springtime can be warm

I understand the changing of the seasons
and balance all the signs of nature's truth
But still I find my answers and my reasons
resurrected every springtime by your youth

chorus
Yes, I still love the sunshine on my shoulders
and all the simple songs that robins sing
and through the years I've learned as I grew older
that I still love the feelings Sunshine brings.

So when I'm gone and you are feeling lonely
and the snow outside is raging in a storm
Remember that somewhere in your memory
your sunny smile brought me closer to the warm.
