---------------------H3 BAT CLUB-----------------------------

As you can imagine, there was very little social life to be found at H3 in the mid 50's. First of all, there were NO women either on the site or off the site in the nearby area. Even if there were, we were not allowed to leave the site unless it was to meet the incoming C47 on detail. The site was very small and after the first day, you've taken pictures of everything on the site. Now and then, a storm would develop off shore and cause the water to crash a little harder against the rocks. That was always exciting. We did put a couple of hoops up in an unoccupied building with a concrete floor and played a little basketball there. If you fell to the floor though, you felt it for days. I personally chipped a tooth badly by doing just that. We also used that building for movies when they were available. There was one occasion where one of the guys received an x-rated movie and we were showing it in our "gym" until 2nd Lt "Tweetie Pie" heard about it and broke into the gym. After screaming "Eeek!", he made us close down the show for the night. Beyond these things I've mentioned, there really wasn't anything to do. Oh yes, there was an establishment known as "Terrible Harry's" that was located off the chow hall. Translation=NCO Club. This is where most of us spent our off-time. The club was run by T/Sgt Harry Schneider. Harry tended bar also and thats why it was called "Terrible Harry's". He was very strict though about under-age drinking and you could not drink liquor under the age of 21. I was 20 years old at the time and I was only allowed to drink beer. Even though, there were no women to be found anywhere, Saturday night was always designated as "Dance Night". No, no, no....we didn't really dance!!!! We just called it "Dance Night". The only thing we had going for us was our imaginations and the more beer we drank, the wilder our imaginations got! One of the guys had a terrific idea one night. I'm going to credit Henry Crankshaw with this idea and I think I'm right. He decided we should form a Bat Club. Gee Whiz, we had a built-in batcave on the rocks not too far from the lighthouse. The rest of us had had just enough beer to think that was a wonderful idea and thus the "Hofn, Iceland Bat Club" was formed.

The following orders were issued to members of the "Bat Club".
