Serena begins as an unlikely superhero: her friends refer to her as "meatball head" and "master of tardiness." But she ages as the series progresses, gradually becoming a more mature and credible leader. She seems ditzier in the American TV episodes, because there's more dialogue and it's all delivered at a frantic pitch.

In the Japanese series, the three "Outer Scouts," Sailor Neptune, Sailor Uranus, and Sailor Pluto, join the team later, as does the diminutive Sailor Chibi-Moon. The Sailor Scouts battle evil aliens, "for justice and love" in miniskirted versions of school uniforms (which Japanese men consider sexy). In the features, which are aimed at a slightly more sophisticated audience, the Scouts appear nude (à la a Barbie doll) and acquire their costumes as they dance to their theme music. (They remain clothed in the TV shows.)

The Name Game: Sailor Moon reflects the Japanese craze for using English words. When the girls speak the charms that transform them into superheroines they use English words: e.g., "Moon Crystal Power Make Up!" The names of the Scouts are also given in English--"Sailor Venus," etc.--but their regular names have been changed for the American adaptations. In Japan, Sailor Moon is Usagi Tsukino; "Usagi" means "rabbit" and is a reference to the Asian myth of the Rabbit in the Moon. Her English name, Serena, refers to her title, Princess Serenity, the daughter of the Moon Queen. The Moon cats Luna and Artemis keep their names. The English names for the other Sailor Scouts echo the sounds of their Japanese names: Ami (Sailor Mercury) is Amy; Rei (Sailor Mars), Raye; Makoto (Sailor Jupiter), Lita; Minako (Sailor Venus), Mina. Mamoru Chiba, Usagi's boyfriend, becomes the inharmonious Darien; his dashing alter ego Tuxedo Kamen, Tuxedo Mask.
