Map Of Panama

Panama was first visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and colonized. It remained under Spanish rule until 1821.
During the height of the Pirate Era, Panama was one of the richest cities along the Spanish Main. It's principle goods were tobacco, copper, gold, silver, bananas, coffe, cacao and sugar cane.
Dense tropical forests provided a natural defense barrier on the Caribbean coast but it did not stop Captain Henry Morgan from successfully plundering the city in 1671.
An important and strategic city during the peak of Spain's dominion, its governorship was only trusted to the most noble, elite and loyal servants of the Crown.
