Rich Mullins
1955 - 1997

So if I stand, let me stand on the promise
That You will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing, let me sing for the joy
That has borne in me these songs...

...And if I weep, let it be as a man who is longing for his home.

Well, Rich, you have at last reached that home you have been longing for. How can I not be happy for you? Indeed, I rejoice that you have finally found that place of peace and rest you have been straining toward for so long.

Yet I mourn. Not for you, but for me, and the thousands of other fans and friends who will miss your sweet voice. Who could ever take the place of you?

I want to thank you...
for encouraging me not to give up...
for challenging me to stretch and grow...
for reminding me of how awesome He is...
for caring enough to share your heart with the world...
and we are not the same.

I cannot help but imagine you now, standing with the angels gathered around the throne, leading them in that familiar chorus you gave us...
"our God is an awesome God."

I know it didn't break your heart to say goodbye,
but it sure broke mine.

I will miss you.

Below are the lyrics to some of Rich's songs that have particularly blessed my life.

Be With You
Everybody, each and all
We're gonna die eventually
It's no more or less our faults
Than it is our destiny
So now, Lord, I come to You
Asking only for Your grace
You know what I've put myself through
All those empty dreams I chased

And when my body lies in the ruins
Of the lies that nearly ruined me
Will You pick up the pieces that were pure and true
And breathe life into them, and set them free
And when You start this world over again from scratch
Will You make me anew out of the stuff that lasts
Stuff that's purer than gold is
Clearer than glass could ever be
And can I be with You?
Can I be with You?

Everybody, all and each
From the day that we are born
We have to learn to walk beneath
Those mercies by which we're drawn
And now we wrestle in the dark
With these angels that we can't see
We will move on, although with scars
O Lord, move inside me

And when my body lies in the ruins
Of the lies that nearly ruined me
Will You pick up the pieces that were pure and true
And breathe life into them, and set them free
And when You blast this cosmos to Kingdom Come
When those jagged-edged mountains I love are gone
When the sky is crossed with the tears of a thousand falling suns
As they crash into the sea
Then can I be with You?
Can I be with You?

What Trouble Are Giants
I'm gonna tell you a story
That you've probably heard
And at the risk of being redundant,
I'm gonna tell you something that may not thrill you,
but it could not hurt
Well it comes out of the sacred
Writings of the Israelites
It's the story of David
And how he slew Goliath

Well the king of his country
Didn't trust in him much
And so to David's alarm, he tried to fit him in his armor
But the thing was so heavy, David couldn't stand up
So he left it by the river
Where he gathered five smooth stones
I guess it's safe to say he figured
He wasn't going out alone
He's not alone

And what trouble are giants?
What's wrong with bein' small?
The bigger they come, ya know, the harder they fall
When you're fighting for Zion, and you're on the Lord's side
I think you're gonna find they ain't no trouble at all
No trouble

Well there must've been some laughter
Among the Philistines
At the sight of this scrawny little shepherd
Comin' out the meet the record-breakin' mammoth of a man
Who was a killing machine
But it didn't shake David
'Cause he was smart enough to know
It's more the size of who you put your faith in
Than the size of your foe
Whoa-whoa

And what trouble are giants?
What's wrong with bein' small?
The bigger they come, ya know, the harder they fall
When you're fighting for Zion, and you're on the Lord's side
I think you're gonna find they ain't no trouble at all
No trouble

Home
I see the morning moving over the hills
I can see the shadows on the western sides
And all those illusions that I had
They just vanish in Your light
And though the chill of the night still hangs in the air
I can feel the warmth of morning on my face
And although the storm had tossed me
Till I thought I'd nearly lost my way

Now the night is fading and the storm is passed
And everything that could be shaken was shaken
And all that remains is all I ever really had

What I'd have settled for, You've blown so far away
What You've brought me to, I thought I could not reach
I came so close to giving up
But You never did give up on me

I see the morning moving over the hills
Feel the rush of life here where the darkness broke
And I am in You, and You're in me
Here where the winds of heaven blow

And now the storm is fading, and the night is through
And everything you sent to shake me from my dreams
They come to wake me in the love I find in You
And now the morning comes
And I can see the things that really matter
Become the wings You send to gather me to my home

To my home

I'm going home

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the life and music of Rich Mullins. Be with his family and friends in this their time of grief. Help us to see the frailty of our own lives, and to strive, as he did, to serve you and praise you with our every breath. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus, we look forward to that day when we are all gathered home to be with You.
Our God is an awesome God!

Strengthen us, forgive us, and keep us ever in Your will, through the name of your Holy Son.
Amen

"For our perishable earthly bodies must be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die. When this happens...then at last the scripture will come true,
'Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?' "
