Origins

Ancestors of America Presidents accepts a marriage believed by some to be that of William and Dorothy (Hayne) King (is it proved?) was in Sherborne, Dorset, England.

There are lineages showing on various web pages of the English ancestry of William Kinge. I don't know the evidence for these links to the past in England.

Born:   Abt 1595. If the 1617 marriage is his, this estimate is 22 years before that marriage, which is reasonable.

Wife: Dorothy [Hayne?], married possibly the marriage found in Sherborne, Dorset, England on Feb 17, 1616/17.  Her first name was Dorothy, per the ship manifest and later estate records. She is identified in Ancestors of American Presidents, Roberts, 1995, as Dorothy Hayne. Torrey uses a question mark beside her name.
 

A King researcher has reported to the King mail list that the Hayne identity and marriage is not firm. This researcher reports: "A marriage record exists in Sherbourne Abbey Church of Saint Mary in Sherborne, Dorset, England for a William and Dorothy (Haynes) King, [Dorothie Hayne] but there is no evidence that this marriage belongs to the immigrant couple other than coincidence of names. The fact that the oldest child, per the immigrant ship manifest, wasn't born till 1623 raises some doubt that this marriage is theirs, although it is possible they had children earlier who died. Birth records of the children born in England are not found in that parish, or anywhere else in England (yet). Thus, confirming evidence coming from subsequent birth records in that parish is lacking."
 
 
She survived her husband and probably died in Southold, Long Island, New York, where she lived on land provided her by her son, Samuel, after William's death.

Immigration: Mar 20, 1635, in "The Hull Company", most passengers from Somerset, England. See this page for a passenger list.

62  Mary Kinge, his daughter, aged 12 years.
63  Katlieryne, his daughter, aged 10 years.
64  William Kinge, his son, aged 8 years.
65  Hanna Kinge, his daughter, aged 6 years.

 

Residence: Apparently went directly to Salem about 1635 and died there circa 1650, when his estate was probated.

Religion:
 

He was a member of the First church at Salem, but in 1637 joined the Antinomians and came under the ban of the Salem authorities. He was requested to sever his connection with the new church or have his arms taken away from him. He remained with the new faith and gave up his gun to Lieutenant Danforth. Later he was banished for a time for sheltering the persecuted Quakers.
 
One of his children, Katherine, married a staunch Quaker,  John Swezey. William, Jr was persecuted by his community for supporting Quakers. William Hallock disinherited one of his boys for marrying one of the Quaker daughters of Katherine and converting to the Friends.


Death: 1650 in Salem, Essex Co, Mass

"William Kinge dying intestate his widow Dorothie Kinge and his eldest son William (to whom is given two oxen to teach his brothers his trade) are ordered to dispose of the estate to William Kinge, eldest son, double portion, Samuell, second son, aged eighteen years, John, third son, aged thirteen, Mary, his daughter, wife of John Scuddr, Katherine, wife of John Swaysy, his second daughter, Hannah, his third daughter, Mehitable, his fourth daughter, aged fifteen, and Deliverance, his fifth daughter, aged nine. Also, his brother John to serve him (William) seven years, and William to allow his mother Dorothie Kinge two shillings for her son John's service. The Ancestry of Daniel Bushnell.. . (Boston, 1918), J. Gardner Bartlett , 31-32 (which states that William1  King married first an unknown wife who died in England before 1631, and secondly, about 1633, Dorothy  ---).

This excerpt is from Records of the Quarterly Courts for Essex County, volume 1, page 206, per Ryal Side From Early Days of Salem Colony,  Pierce, Calvin P.  1931. Who are these people, named as relatives in the will of Katherine Shaflin - wife of William King, Jr.?

"By will, proved November 25, 1684, he devised one half of his real estate to his wife, Katherine, for her life, and at her death this portion was to go to whom his wife by will should appoint. In her will, dated June 11, 1708, proved January 1, 1718, she gave to her nephew or cousin, Samuel Stone, and to her niece, Sarah Manning, wife of Jacob Manning, of Salem, all her estate real and personal."

Besides the first two children being on the ship manifest and later children in Salem, Mass vital records, the children of William King appear in a 1650 court record dealing with his estate:

"The widow, Dorothie, and William, the eldest son, were ordered by the Court on February 3, 1650, to dispose of the estate, which was appraised at one hundred and twelve pounds, from which William, the eldest, was to have a double portion of twenty pounds; Samuel, John, Hannah, Mehitable, and Deliverance were to have ten pounds each, and Mary, wife of John Scudder, and Katherine, wife of John Swaysy, five pounds each."

We are descended from William and Dorothy (Hayne) King through FIVE lines of descent.
