The Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe (DALT) harks back to the period in 1984 when NPCC cadets had to learn the basic skills of lion dancing from The Chinese High School Scouts Lion DanceTroupe and the Potong Pasir Lion Dance Troupe. Spearheading the inception of the DALT was our Vice-Principal and Officer-in-charge, ASP Tan Cheng Hua, who, on managing to obtain both the enthusiastic support of our principal and the patronage of Mdm Wee Bee Hoon, had the DALT successfully making its appearance at many official opening ceremonies and culminating in its debut performance at the school"Nanyang Night" in 1987. Mdm Wee donated 3 lions, 1 drum, and 12 cymbals. Evermindful of the objectives underlying the formation of DALT; being the provision of another dimension in training for the cadets, enhancement of the cadets' understanding of Chinese culture and social value as well as imparting to the cadtes the basic skills of lion dancing and martial arts, instructors and officers worked closely in tandem towards the realisation of these objectives. Over the years, the DALT gradually came to acquire its own character as training extends beyong the realm of conventional prancing and arm wrestling manoeuvres to include the weaving, plaiting and sewing of the DALT gear. Cadets worked nimbly and deftly with their fingers in producing lions and dragons seemingly comparable with their commercially produced counterparts. In the process, cadets learned to imbibe the values of teamwork, appreciate the need for resourcefulness and improvisation. Come Chinese New Year, and the combination of cymbals and drums of the DALT reaches its highest crescendo as the troupe performs its annual "cai qing" (plucking of the greens) at either homes or offices of well-wishers.
