Nothing Could Be Finer

Seaside at Copenhagen

Copenhagen is another bright, sparkling city of the north. It is 850 years old and, in the 15th century, was the capital of not only Denmark but also of Norway and Sweden. It is home to the oldest monarchy in the world and a delightful city to visit. Our tour took us to the Little Mermaid, Rosenborg Castle, Gefion Fountain, and Amelienborg Palace Square, the royal residence where four identical mansions house Queen Margarethe II, the queen mother, the crown prince, and visiting royalty. We stopped to look in on the world-famous Tivoli Gardens, and the world's longest shopping street, the pedestrian-only Stroget offering everything from the latest Scan designs to fresh shrimp sandwiches.

The Little Mermaid

The morning was soon over and we hurried back to the ship to prepare a picnic lunch. I had made tentative arrangements to meet an internet friend of mine at the symbol of Copenhagen, the statue of the Little Mermaid which was not too far from where the Marco Polo was docked. I didn't know for sure if she could make it. She's a teacher who lives in Boras, Sweden. If she could, she would drive down to Malmo, Sweden and cross over on the ferry to Copenhagen.

The arrangement was that we would wait untl 3 pm. We sat on a nearby bench and as time went by and hopes faded, we ate our picnic lunch.  At 3 pm, I ate Eva's roast beef sandwich and we reluctantly headed back to the ship. As it turned out, she had something she couldn't get out of so we missed our chance -- this time.

By the way, the Little Mermaid, a bronze statue who gazes longingly out to sea, is based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. Later in the day, we saw an excellent shipboard presentation entitled The Hans Christian Andersen Parade with a local actor playing Andersen and several talented children who performed in skits based on Andersen's many fairy tales.

And all too soon, it was our last night aboard the Marco Polo. It was up and at 'em the next morning and time to make that long trip home. We flew from Copenhagen to Paris to Atlanta to Asheville, arriving home at about one in the morning; weary -- but still full of wonder at what we had seen and done. We had met Irene and Tom from Maui, Carolyn from Albuquerque, Beverly from Houston, and Margaret and Brian from Bristol, England. We will stay in touch with our new friends and hopefully see them again.

Cruise Boat

Where to next time?
We're talking about a Rhone River cruise starting with a few days in Paris, boarding the boat in Lyon, and cruising down to the south of France.
