feminism is the radical notion that women are people

I was 18 years old the first time I heard someone utter the phrase, "I'm not a feminist, but..." with a straight face. My jaw dropped. A women's libber from early childhood, I knew that line as a stereotype, a joke. Out in the big world, though, I discovered that not only was this particular woman deeply invested in distancing herself from the label, there were lots more like her.
Which is a shame.
For me, feminist has never been a dirty word, and feminism is not about labels. It is simply a basic awareness of the need for women worldwide to stand on a level playing field with men, and a dedication to bringing that about. It is the radical notion that women are people. And it is so deeply a part of me that it naturally comes into play in everything I do, particularly my parenting.
