International Internet Course for the Basic Science Assessment for Ophthalmologists.
The International Council of Ophthalmology is the executive body of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies. One of the objectives of the Council is to advance ophthalmic education. The International Basic Science Assessment is part of that initiative.
The primary objective of the assessment is to find out whether a candidate has acquired the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary to understand the scientific basis of ophthalmology. The aim is to achieve a uniformly high standard throughout the world.
The International Basic Science Assessment is intended to complement but not to replace existing examinations in basic science. However, certain countries and examining bodies have accepted this test as equivalent to the basic science part of their examinations. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow accept it as equivalent to their section A.
The Basic Science Assessment is aimed at doctors in training who wish to become ophthalmologists. The Assessment will be directed by the Examiners appointed by the Education Committee of the International Council of Ophthalmology.
The test shall be held annually in March or April. At present it takes place simultaneously in English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish. Other languages will be considered if there are sufficient numbers of candidates to justify the additional translation of the questions. The test will normally be held in the candidate’s own country.
The test will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQ) over a 3-hour period.
Some candidates have had no teaching or practice in Optics and Refraction. The Assessment is therefore scored in two parts, Part I: Basic Science, Part II: Optics and Refraction.
Certificates:
The certificate can be presented as evidence of achievement of this standard of knowledge of the Basic Sciences related to Ophthalmology.
This course is conducted in English with the sole purpose of preparing candidates for the Part I: Basic Science ONLY.
The course for the March 2000 Assessment will begin April 1, 1999.

The course is Free of Charge.
Only 100 candidates throughout the world will be enrolled for the course. Enrollment will be strictly on the first come first basis. Candidates from developing countries may be provided with complete course material free of charge, precluding the need for expensive textbooks.
