THE UNIVERSAL SPIRIT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

The Civil Rights Movement in America grew out of the African-Americans need for equal rights. It began in the Black churches throughout the southern portion of the United States. However, the movement was to transcend race and religion. The movement used a system of "passive ressistance", which was built upon the teachings of Jesus, Thoreau, Tolstoy and Ghandi. The spectrum of Civil Right's workers included Blacks, Whites, Jews and Gentiles. Through the leadership of courageous Americans, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, James Lawson, John Lewis, Robert Abernathy, Rosa Parks, Will Campbell and others, the Civil Rights workers proved that the power of love can overcome the power of hate. Teach your students to "have a dream".
