Virginia State Police Trooper K. Counts reported Monday a 1:20 a.m. single vehicle accident Saturday, October 11, 2003, in which Justin Lee Collier, 21, of Dryden, and Carrie Nell Oaks, 34, of Pennington Gap, were killed when the 1986 Pontiac in which they were riding went off the right side of the road and struck a tree in the Woodway area. Trooper Counts said Collier was driving south on U.S. Route 421, and had turned left onto Route 785 into Woodway, when he took a left-hand curve at an excessive rate of speed and the accident occurred. He said neither the driver or the passenger was wearing a seat belt. The victims were transported to the Lee Regional Medical Center. Trooper Counts was assisted at the scene by the Lee County Sheriff's Department and the Pennington Gap Police Department. He said the vehicle was totaled, with extensive damages to the complete right side, top and front.
