The Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club was incorporated in 1967, the same year that
the Pittsburgh Penguins came into National Hockey League existence. The Club
actually began in 1948 as the Pittsburgh Hornet Booster Club. The Pittsburgh
Hornets were an American Hockey League team affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings
and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The three main purposes of the Club are as follows:
In 1975, the Booster Club began its affiliation with the National Society for
Autistic Children. Working with legendary Pittsburgh sportscaster Myron Cope,
the Booster Club has helped to make this organization grow to the national
prominence it enjoys today. We helped organize and promote the very first
Vintage Grand Prix which benefits the Autism Society. Each year we host a
"Welcome Back Dinner" to not only welcome the team back but also to benefit
the Autism Society. Players, wives, coaches and local sports media attend
the event and all proceeds benefit the charity. Proceeds from this dinner and
our annual Christmas donation has enabled the Booster club to donate over $40,000
to this worthy cause in 23 years. Other charities that the Booster Club has
supported are the Mario Lemieux Cancer Foundation, the Ashley Barrasso Cancer
Foundation for Children and Ron Francis Charities to name a few.
The Booster Club is an active social organization, travelling to other NHL cities
to watch the Pens play, attending the NHL and AHL Booster Clubs Conventions held in
various cities in the summer months; also we have a summer bowling league, a summer
family picnic and attend various group nights at the Pirate games.
Any fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins over the age of 18 is invited to join the Booster
Club. It is a social organization of people who love the sport of "HOCKEY" and who
want to get involved in giving back to the community. We have supported youth hockey
in the area, supported the Penguins by working the 1997 NHL Draft held in
Pittsburgh as well as the NHL Shootout which comes to town each summer. Also
we are involved with the Project Bundle-Up auction on WTAE and are still involved
with the Vintage Grand Prix.
