  3. 23 DEC 2000 BORGE, Victor (Comedic pianist). Victor Borge died in his home in Connecticut. He was the author of such humorous books as My Favorite Intermissions, Lives of the Musical Greats and Other Facts You Never Knew Were Missing. Borge died at home in his sleep.   5. 12 DEC 2000 FRIEDRICH, Götz (Opera producer) He was born on 4 AUG 1930. Was at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1989, from 1981 until his death he was General Director of the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin. ~ age 70. London Times Obit

  6. 10 DEC 2000 ALLAN, David Bremner (French horn player) He was a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and the Boston Brass Ensemble, died in Avery Manor in Needham, MA. ~ age 72. Boston Globe Obit

  7. 06 DEC 2000 KLEMPERER, Werner (Actor, conductor and narrator) Son of conductor Otto. He appeared as a narrator with many major symphony orchestras with a repertoire that included Beethoven’s Egmont and Fidelio, Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Oedipus Rex. His narration of Mozart’s The Impresario, with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, aired on PBS’s 'Live from Lincoln Center'. He also conducted many orchestral performances and performed in various Broadway productions, including The Sound of Music, with the New York City Opera. He played Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus with companies in Seattle and Cleveland. Well known for his portrayal of Col Klink on TV's 'Hogan's Heros'. ~ age 80.

  8. 06 DEC 2000 TUCKER, Mark (Musicologist and Duke Ellington expert) Born on June 4, 1954. Wrote book, Ellington: The Early Years (1991) Oral historian in the music department at Columbia University. Published the memoirs of the clarinettist Garvin Bushell (1988). ~ age 46.

  10. 25 NOV 2000 BARWICKI, John ( BSO bass player). A member the Boston Symphony and the Boston Pops, died of pancreatic cancer at Fairlawn Nursing Home in Lexington, MA. ~ age 90. Boston Globe Obit

  11. 20 NOV 2000 LEGG, James (Composer) Legg has been a composition fellow at Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Bellagio Center (run by the Rockefeller Foundation), the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

  12. 17 NOV 2000 RUDIAKOV, Michael (American cellist who performed with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra) Studied at the Manhattan School of Music in 1956. Formerly principal cellist of the Indianapolis Symphony and principal cellist of the Jerusalem Symphony. Faculty of Sarah Lawrence College, directed a chamber music series. He taught at the New England Conservatory, the Manhattan School of Music, and Lehman College. Recently faculty at the Manchester Music Festival in Vermont, director in 1985. Heart attack in Manchester, NH. ~ age 66.

  15. 06 NOV 2000 LOVERIDGE, Iris (British pianist). Loveridge was born in London on April 10, 1917. Popular pianist who played concertos with Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Henry Wood, chamber music with the Alberni Quartet, Evelyn Rothwell. Her music ranging from Bach to Rubbra. Her funeral was in Gloucestershire. ~ age 83.

  17. 31 OCT 2000 SMITH, Brooks (Pianist, teacher and accompanist) Toured many years with violinist Jascha Heifetz. Died in Covina, CA. ~ age 88.

  18. 31 OCT 2000 RUBIO, David (aka David Spink, flamenco guitarist and guitar builder) Rubio Quartet named in his honor. Built guitars in Cambridge, England. Made 8 stringed guitar with Paul Galbraith. ~

  19. 27 OCT 2000 BERRY, Walter (Austrian Bass Baritone) World reknown bass baritone who won acclaim for his interpretations of Mozart and Strauss and was beloved by Austrians for his renditions of Franz Schubert, died of a heart attack at his home in Vienna. ~ age 71. Boston Globe Obit

  22. 08 OCT 2000 WALTERS, Jess (American baritone, teacher) Debut in 1941 as Macbeth with the New York Opera Company. His Covent Garden debut came in 1947 and he sang 684 performances with that company. He came to the University of Texas at Austin in 1965. ~ age 91 Austin Statesman Obit

  23. 25 SEP 2000 REILLY, Tommy (MBE, concert harmonica player) Born on 21 AUG August 1919. Son of a versatile military bandmaster, Captain James Reilly, Royal Military School of Music, who had founded the Elmdale Harmonica Band. Michael Spivakovsky's Harmonica Concerto was written for Reilly and premiered at the Festival of Britain in 1951. It was the first major work for the instrument. ~ Age 81.

  25. 22 AUG 2000 GIGLI, Rina (Italian soprano). She was born in Naples 30 JAN 1916. Taught by her father, Beniamino, and made her first appearance at in Rome in 1936. Opera debut whith her father in 1940 at Spoleto as Suzel in Mascagni's L'amico Fritz. She sang at Covent Garden in 1946 with Naples' San Carlo Company, as Mimi to her father's Rodolfo and Nedda to his Canio in Pagliacci. She toured many opera houses singing with her father. At San Carlo in 1949 she was praised for her Desdemona to Ramón Vinay's Otello. In 1951 she toured South Africa with her father and Tito Gobbi. She also made a few recordings with her father. After his death in 1957 her career faded. Her second husband was bass, Plinio Clabassi. ~ age 84.

  26. 21 AUG 2000 WILSON, Neil (American Tenor). Died at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Hospital in New York after a short battle with kidney cancer. Lived in New York and Berlin. He spent 5 seasons with the Metropolitan Opera where he made his debut as Macduff in "Macbeth" in 1988. ~ age 44.

  27. 20 AUG 2000 EVANS, Nancy (English Mezzo-Soprano) OBE. Was born in Liverpool on 19 MAR 1915. English Opera Group from its formation in 1946. ~ age 85.

  28. 18 AUG 2000 KRAINIS, Bernard (Recorder performer) Promoted and played period music and championed early music and period instruments. ~ 75.

  29. 17 AUG 2000 DONATONI, Franco (Italian composer) Was born in Verona on 9 JUN 1927. His career spanned nearly fifty years, his compositions of the last two decades being most popular. He studied violin as well as composition, graduated in general studies and accountancy, and taught at the conservatories in Bologna and Turin. ~ 73.

  30. 15 AUG 2000 PAPINEAU-COUTURE, JEAN (Canadian composer). A teacher and former Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Université de Montréal, he was a founding member of many Canadian musical organizations. He won the Prix de musique Calixa-Lavallée and the Canadian Music Council Medal. b- 12 NOV 1916 in Outremont near Montréal, Québec. ~ age 84.

  31. 10 AUG 2000 DANCO, Suzanne (Belgian soprano, opera and song recitalist). Was born on 22 JAN 1911. Noted as an accomplished Mozartian, Mimi and Mélisande, she impressed audiences with her intense interpretations throughout the 1950s, graced many of the principal opera houses and international festivals in Europe. She was born into a Flemish environment and brought up in Brussels. She was supported in her studies at the Brussels Conservatory by the Queen of Belgium. ~ age 89.

  32. 08 AUG 2000 WIENER, Otto (Viennese Baritone). Born in Vienna 13 FEB 1913. Concert debut 1937. Graz debut in 1953, Simon Boccanegra. Vienna State and Bavarian State operas. MET debut 18 OCT 1962 as Hans Sachs. Noted Dutchman, Gunther and Wotan. Photo ~ age 87.

  34. 03 AUG 2000 PLATT, (Sir) Peter (British musicologist) He was born in Sheffield on 6 JUL 1924. He died in Sydney. Studied Western and Eastern music. He explored the world of the Indian sitar and championed the Baroque oboe. ~ age 76

  35. 03 AUG 2000 PERKINS, Kenneth (Canadian violinist, teacher, and chamber musician). The co-founder and second violinist of the Orford Quartet. Perkins died at his home in Hartington, Ont. ~ age 65. Obituary, Tamara Bernstein - National Post

  36. 27 JUL 2000 DYER, Lorely (British soprano). She was born on 15 DEC 1907. In 1938 she was a guest singer with the Carl Rosa Opera Company playing Micaela in Carmen and Adele in Die Fledermaus. She was Gretel for Covent Garden's touring production of Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel. In 1940 Sir Thomas Beecham invited her to sing Mimì in La Bohème. She was also Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly at Sadler's Wells.~ age 92.

  37. 24 JUL 2000 SHUMSKY, Oscar (American violinist, conductor and teacher). Born in Philadelphia, 23 MAR 1917. He died in Rye, New York. ~ age 83.

  38. 21 JUL 2000 HAMILTON, Iain (Scottish composer). He turned Tolstoy's Anna Karenina into an opera. ~ age 78.

  39. 19 JUL 2000 LEGGE, Harry (OBE, conductor), was born on 24 APR 1914. He influenced orchestral training in Britain. He was also the musical director and conductor of the National Youth Wind Orchestra for 20 years. ~ age 86.

  40. 17 JUL 2000 DISPEKER, Thea (Vocalist impresario). An influential impresario on both sides of the Atlantic. For over 50 years she represented some of the most distinguished singers in the world, as well as instrumentalists, conductors and stage directors. She was born in Munich on 28 SEP 1902. Died NYC. ~ age 97.

  44. 25 JUN 2000 BLOCK, Arnold (American composer) Was founder of the Mohawk Concerts in the US Berkshire Mountains). ~ age 77.

  45. 21 JUN 2000 HOVHANESS, Alan (Armenian-American Composer who blended western with Asian music in his compositions). Was at his death composer-in-residence at the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He died at Seattles's Swedish Medical Center where he was being treated a chronic stomach problem. b-Somerville, MA 8 MAR 1911. ~ age 89.

Was diagnosed with cancer and had been undergoing radiation therapy. He had been hospitalized at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. ~ age 58.

  50. 09 JUN 2000 EDWARDS, Gwynne (Violist and teacher). b- 27 SEP 1909. He was Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the Royal Academy of Music, for 36 years. Was principal violist with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia of London and co-principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic. ~ age 90.

  56. 18 MAY 2000 FERRIS, William (American choral conductor and composer). Led the William Ferris Chorale and specialized in performing works by contemporary composers. He taught at the Vatican. In 1989 he was given a papal knighthood by Pope John Paul II. Ferris collapsed while directing a rehearsal of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem in Chicago. ~ age 63.

  57. 17 MAY 2000 KOHS, Ellis (composer, music teacher, and theorist). Leukemia. ~ age 84.

  58. 14 MAY 2000 VALLETTI, Cesare (Tenor renowned for his interpretations of Mozart's operas), in Rome, Italy of heart failure. He gave up his career in 1967 because of health problems. ~ age 79.

  63. 16 MAR 2000 HENDERSON, Roy. (British baritone). He became one of the country's leading singing teachers after a notable performing career. CBE, born in Edinburgh on July 4, 1899. He died at Bromley, Kent. ~ age 100.

  64. 07 MAR 2000 HARRIS, Margaret R. Harris (Pioneering conductor). Margaret Rosezarian Harris was the first black woman to conduct the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and many other US cities. She died of a heart attack. ~ age 56.
