Cyr Runedancer

Rune Dancer from the far away Lands of the Desert Forge

Backround

Cyr is a Runedancer from the Southern desert of Rasheir, in the city of Ald Achneir. A dancer from one of the temples, a slave worshipper of the Great Pattern. She is more of a priestess than a slave, possessing freedom in a manner unknown among other slaves. She is free to work as the pattern tells her. Cyr communes with the pattern through her dance. It is composed of a number of basic patterns that form the basis of their beliefs. Her feelings, instincts, and surroundings dictate how the dance is played out and give her insight into how she should meet a challenge. Other dances are used to initiate combat. Her culture due to this belief in the pattern has developed a form of martial arts. They follow the sacred patterns, each and every pace, each movement of the hand, each and every move is an action or reaction to an established event. A master of this art is incredibly dangerous as since it focuses on patterns it analyzes an opponents form and selects the pattern that will defeat it. Thus fighting because a thinking game as well as an arena for physical combat. Weapons used by these dancers are usually spears which suit their dancing style. The strangest weapon in their arsenal is that of the silk scarf. When moved rapidly it's edge can function as a blade slicing enemies and when spun into a tight cone becomes as a spear for a single short thrust. (Which must then be rewound.) The rune dancers are able to cast spells. Most spells are empathic, affecting those who view their dances. Many others are combat related, enhancing physical strikes, allowing them to hit ephemereal beings. Defensively, it allows them to deflect missiles and multiple attackers.

As is the way of her people, when the stars dictated that she follow them. Leave her home behind and become a lost wanderer she did so without question. Why this was, remains to be seen, as only once has this ever happened before, and that story is lost in legend.

Ald Achneir, a city in the desert of Raseir

Society Everything in these people's lives revolve around following an established pattern dictated by the Gods. Their patron deity, the Silent One, is the one who showed them the way, and now he speaks to them only through the gifts he has given him, Astronomy, Mathematics, Lineology. At birth, a baby's entire life is preplanned, according to the stars, the location of his birth, the time. An extra-ordinary number of things are taken into account. (Also the possibility of bribes, though this is often covered up.) So great is the peoples faith in this system that when a leader proves himself incompetent, it is merely assumed that the people who read his lifepath were mistaken. Ald Achneir follows a strict caste system, slavery is normal for these people and seen as completely natural. The belief is that if one performs well at the tasks dictated by his lifepath he will be rewarded in his next life. Eventually all will ascend to be with their god, when they have proved themselves worthy. Those who turn from the path mapped out for them are shunned and considered outcasts. In their next life they will be punished for their disobedience. Marriage is by approval of the priesthood. Thus infidelity is frowned upon. All women wear the robes and veils no matter what their station. Wether they be slave, or rich noble. The concept is to remove temptation from the eyes of man. To go without robes, or veil is the same as a person of another culture travelling naked.

Magic In Ald Achnier magic is considered to be a very natural force. It flows betweeen all things of creation. Living and unliving and is the core of every object. Every motion, every sound given utterance can affect the flows between all things. Thus it's possible via the right utterances and the right movements to accidentally cause a catastrophe on the other side of the globe. This has resulted in their reliance on mystical patterns, chants, and precise movements to perform their magics. Currently all who wield magic are present within the confines of the church. Only a rare few, outlanders and outcasts wield magic other than the Silent One's

Religious Structure The church of the Silent One is divided into two major components. Those who sing and those who dance. The singers are primarily male due to their larger lungs and greater vocal range, and the dancers are primarily female because of their faster reflexes, and superior agility. (As far as I know these are true.) The singers spend their days in study and song, praising the Silent one and the other gods, as well as practicing their magics. The dancers, learn a little of this, but are mostly trained for combat, and the defense of the singers. In tandem they are a powerful force. Especially when the dancer channels her mystical energy to the singer. The dancer comprises the motive component and the singer provides the ocal, creating incredible feats of magic.

Architecture and the City The majority of the buildings here are hard packed clay and in the case of the rich plaster. Multi-storied buildings are common throughout the city. The palaces of the rich are adorned with grand spires complete with roofop balconies which offer an impressive view of the city. On the in-land edge of the city, resides a perpetual tent city whose population fluctuates as with the seasons and the winds of trade. ( I.E. the traders often come with the north wind and set off again at the end of the season) The city, being on the verge of the ocean is famous for it's rich supply of Salt. Several natural caves were discovered long ago, these caves had trapped seawater thousands of years ago before the desert came into being. This trapped water eventually evaporated leaving an incredible supply of the white dust.

Clothing The standard of dress, due to the harsh heat and freezing nights, is robes. The station of the person represented by the detail workings of the geometric shapes interwoven upon it. Their tradesmen are beyond repute, since everything that is of value is decorated with runes, leather is tooled, ands steel is acid etched with the most extreme care. To mislay a pattern on an object is believedto cause it to be cursed, and in the case of magical objects bears truth.
