Talia hails from the Barbarian Lands of the northern continent, her tribe was a goup of nomadic hunters who lived in the colder northern areas near the Great Wall Mountains. Talia's birth was seen as a good omen by the tribe, she had many of the traits of one of the region's fiercest predators. The huntsmen felt that this meant the tribe would become well known for its hunting prowess. A few felt she was a bad omen for the tribe, that the tribe had offended the spirits and that the birth of such an unusual child was a sign to repent. However, the hunter's voices won out eventually. If Talia was indeed a sign that they had offended the gods, she would be brought up by the tribe and make the gods proud of them again. Talia was raised as a hunter and tracker, and became the best of her tribe's hunters.

During a blizzard, an avalanche covered the camp and killed of a large number of the tribesmen. The remains joined with another tribe (herders and farmers) out of neccesity. The blizzard was taken as an menaing that those who were unworthy had been killed off, and the hospitible meeting with the tribe of herdman was a sign that the survivors were to begin a new way of life. Talia was left without a place to belong, since the new tribe did not need a hunter, and as the farming life did not suit her, Talia set off on her own, with the idea af gradually heading south to see the great civilizations she had heard stories about.

It was during this wandering that Talia met Jen Tai, and the two became friends quickly, deciding to set off to the south together and join the Edge Guard.
