Red Wave - State Champions
Tony Jones has every reason to be proud of his Red Wave squad. They defeated Richmond Metro Gold 71 - 54 for the State Title. The 12-and-under basketball tournament was held April 19-20 in the Vine Center at Liberty University in Lynchburg. The Red Wave (14-0) will be the No. 1 team in July's National Tournament in Salt Lake City July 18-27, 1997. These kids really stood up and played basketball. Two of the games in the tournament were really close, but in the championship we shot 70 percent from the field, said Jones. Frankie Harris, Marcus Becker and Korey Townsend scored a team high 15 points each. Townsend also hit three 3-point field goals. Alexay Hairston, with 17 points in a semi-final game, finished with 12 in the title matchup. Everybody stepped up for us in the championship, said Jones. It was an overall team effort. Other coaches kept coming up to us saying, Your kids are playing with a lot of confidence. This is our program's seventh State Title in the last nine years. How many kids can say that they were a part of that. Last year we had great community support in which we raised $15,000 to fund the national tournament to Cocoa, Florida, said Assistant Coach Dana A. Pettie. We will need greater community, civic, church and business support in order to raise the $25,000 to fund the trip to the National Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah.
