Mary

Mary

by Greg Baysans

When I was fourteen or fifteen
I was a babysitter
for my parents' friends, Chuck and Mary.
Mary showed me her sketchbooks,
exquisite pencil drawings,
human studies: a nude woman stood
robed in her own long blond hair,
weeping, head down, into upraised hands.
"Why is she crying?" I asked.
"You're not old enough to understand."
I am that crying woman.
Mary, I'm old enough now.
