KNOW THYSELF!
Poet X of PDX: "Subject: Music, music, music.
"Instead of my own CDs, tonight I listened to some shared by a co-worker.
"One was a two-CD collection called 'Party Killers,' a combination of saccharine atrocities ('Feelings' by Morris Albert) and novelty hits, mostly from the '70s.
"I'd successfully forgotten the duet Donny and Marie Osmond did about the 'other side of the mountain,' but I was able to wince and sing along at the same time as I heard it tonight!
"I don't know how long it's been since I heard 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing,' but it brought an instant telegenic smile to my face and a thirst for my nearby soda — Pepsi instead of Coke, alas.
"But I realized, to my chagrin, nearly half of the songs are on other CDs I own. Don't come to a party at my house! (And I do have to find my own copy of 'Party Killers' soon, of course. It is 'a keeper.')
"Another CD was the hits of Herb Alpert. I hadn't heard 'Zorba the Greek' since I was a child. A cousin used to play Herb's 'A Taste of Honey' album when we visited there. I'd stand in the middle of the room and slowly start to spin as the song began. As the song speeds up, I would spin faster and faster.
"That's all I remember, but remembering that, I can see their farmhouse as it was back then, can even smell their leather couch, and remember its plastic-like texture, the horse-head outline stitched into it, the matching rocking chair beside it, the wood blonde, not dark.
"The other immediate sensation, remembering their house, is of being miles from anyone except their one nearby neighbors, a childless couple 'just over the hill' with whom they didn't get along.
" 'Zorba the Greek' is also a challenge to type to. But fun."
