Dollard-des-Ormeaux firefighters are on Fire!!!

L'Association des pompiers de Dollard des Ormeaux membrer of the largest group of professionnals firefighters in Québec, including Montréal (R.A.P.Q.)

The Dollard-des-Ormeaux Firefighters seriously question the true intention of Mr. Bouchard, Trudel, Perreault and Bourque when they talk about the integration of the fire services in the CUM terrirtory.

We talk a lot about budgets, economy, and sharing services. We talk a lot without ever acting. However, it is not the studies or reports that are missing...the shelves are full of studies, etc.

During this time, what do we do about the safety of the population? How do you explain that the residents on the Island of Montreal do not have the same protection if they live on the north, center or west end of the Island?

Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a City of 48,000 residents, is protected by twenty-four (24) firefighters divided into 4 shifts, or if you prefer, the equivalent of 4 firefighters and one officer per shift. There are seven fire intervention vehicles in the Fire Station therefore more than half must stay there due to a lack of personel. Great protection!

One of the seven vehicles responds to medical calls at the same time as Urgences Santé (duplication of services), at a rate of 2.5 calls per shift. When we respond to medical calls, the population can count on being protected by 2 firefighters, one officer and six vehicles.

We must respond with a minimum of three firefighters and one officer to mutual aid calls, an agreement signed without our knowledge between the cities of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Pierrefonds, Lachine, LaSalle, Ile Bizard, Pointe Claire, Kirkland, Beaconsfield, Dorval, Ville Saint-Pierre, Montreal West and Verdun. Even though Montreal is only a few blocks away!!!

Rather than hiring 8 more firefighters, a promise made that dates to the beginning of 1980 and aimed at offering an adequate service to the population, the Mayor Janiszewski prefers to keep the number of firefighters at the bare minimum and spend the citizen`s money on overtime. After this, he denounces the high salaries of the firefighters, the salaries which include, due to lack of personnel, many hours of overtime.

When it comes time to sit at a negotiation table and talk about renumerations, our dear Mayor Janiszewski considers us as a small unimportant group. However, when it comes to political gain, the tune changes and Mayor Janiszewski, considers us to be the best in the world. Nice words, Mr. Mayor... With half of the firefighters nearing the 50`s, it is necessary for you to understand that it doesn`t work anymore Mr. Mayor. The little taps on the back are over.

After a 3 year pay freeze, we were in good faith, and ready to restart the negotiations, like we both had agreed to. However, it didn`t take long to see that there was no desire on the part of the City to negotiate. The City perferred instead to wait for a special law from the Bouchard government, behind which they could hide. We did have a few meetings with the Director of Human Resources who, visibly, did not receive a clear mandate from the municipal administration, resulting in empty meetings without any formal offers.

All of a sudden, the special law is declared by Prime Minister Bouchard. A giant step, Mayor Janiszewski and his partners quickly prevailed themselves of the law.

It is very difficult and frustrating to discuss with the Mayor. At one time an Actuary, and another a union delegate, he changes his hats whenever it suits him. He will not put anything in writing and he often forgets, rather selectively, what he says. Believing he is always right, he only has one question that he is really interested in as far as work relationships go....How Much?
