POP ON TOP #9 - DECEMBER 2000


Asteroid B612 launched their fourth and latest album, Readin’ Between The Lines, on Saturday 25th of November at the Green Square Hotel. Available on CD and a limited edition 12"vinyl run of 300 copies (complete with bonus tracks), Readin’ Between The Lines is released through Melbourne’s Full Toss Records.

The Cassanovas are a new Melbourne outfit who sound more than capable of filling the gap left by the Stunt Car Drivers demise. Their debut 7 inch single, 10 Outta 10 b/w Too Cool For School / Spring Break, has just been released, again by Full Toss Records.

The Celibate Rifles have just released their brand new album, A Mid-Stream Of Consciousness, which is being distributed through Oracle Records. This is the band’s first album in five years.

Challenger 7's debut album, Payola, now has a European release, thanks to Italy's Freakshow Records. This version will feature completely different artwork, a different track listing and several bonus tracks, including Bi-polar, which was previously only available on a French 7" vinyl and also the entire Great Slump Forward EP - which was only released on 7" as well and is now virtually deleted.

Divine Rites Records are planning a third volume in their series, Storming The Citadel, which pays tribute to the Citadel Record Label. So far Angie Pepper has completed a cover of the Lipstick KillersHindu Gods of Love while The Celibate Rifles have covered The Visitors' tune Journey by Sledge.

Sydney trio, The High Society, have just released a brand new EP through Crankinhaus Records, with the cover art done by The Hard Ons’ Ray Ahn. They are also planning to record an album early next year.

The (re-united) Hard Ons are back with a new 16-track album, entitled This Terrible Place, which has been released by Chatterbox Records.

Fresh from supporting Trans Am, You Am I and Rocket Science, Jed Whitey have just returned from a quick fire tour of the East Coast of Australia (their first), where they played in Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong. Anyone who made it to any of their shows would have been able pick up advance copies of their second EP, Superfly Bigmuff (Superfuzz Bigmac), which will be available on CD and limited 12 inch vinyl. If you can’t wait until next year, you can order copies from the Highbeam and Whammo! Superfly Bigmuff (Superfuzz Bigmac) has already recieved a 9/10 review in Highbeam Magazine. The band also have several MP3’s available for downloading. You can download their version of Turbonegro's Self Destructo Bust at Ampcast, while MP3.com has La Tacha, an out-take from the Alrighty! sessions.

The New Christs are set to release a brand new 7" single through Spain’s Munster Records sometime in the near future. Entitled Groovy Times b/w On Top Of Me it will be a limited edition release of only 1,000 copies. Meanwhile the band goes off the road after November dates to prepare material to be recorded in January for a forthcoming album slated for an April 2001 release. There's also a vicious rumour (circulated by their web page) that the New Christs will be touring a number of European countries as well as West Coast U.S. dates in 2001.....Stay tuned for further details.

In related news, Radio Birdman principals Rob Younger and Deniz Tek are playing together again, this time as part of garage rockers Deep Reduction. Younger is flying Stateside to hook up with The Iceman to record vocals for the band's second album, which will be released through Get Hip Records. No word on any live shows, or a release date as yet.

B>Deniz also has a new solo cut on the just-released Vicious Kitten Records compilation, Rock and Roll War. The track is called Out of the Mood. Other featured artists include Asteroid B-612, Brother Brick, Freddy Lynxx and The Corner Gang, The Golden Arms, Jeff Dahl, Kevin K Band, B-Movie Rats and Chris Masuak.

Six Ft Hick's new album, Chicken, is now available. Recorded in Melbourne with Tony Cohen & Spencer P Jones, it follows on from the release of their extended mini-album from earlier this year.

Michael Carpenter’s new album, Hopefulness, is now available from Not Lame Records. In conjunction with this release, Michael also has a brand new webpage at www.mcarp.com. It's got lots of news, MP3’s, links and other cool stuff, which will be updated regularly.

The Chevelles’ brand new EP Sunbleached is finally available. It is the first release on the new Australian and US label Zip Records. The band are currently in the studio finishing off the rest of their new album which will hopefully see the light of day early 2001. There is no title as of yet. They also have a 19 track retrospective album set for release in Brazil around Christmas time. The Chevelles are also hoping to tour Spain again in March with a possible SxSW gig in Texas, USA around the same time. There is also the possibility of an eastern states tour with the release of the album.

Even’s annual Christmas shows at the Punters Club in Melbourne will celebrate the special Christmas release of their new 7” single, Rock and Roll Save My Life, which will be released through the Full Toss label. It is also the first taste of their forthcoming new album, which will be out next year on Rubber Records.

Golden Rough have just arrived back in Australia after 3 weeks in America, playing shows in New York, Boston, Vermont, upstate New York and Nashville. In New York, Golden Rough played at the CMJ Music Marathon, America's biggest new music showcase while in Nashville the band played at the famed Exit/In club as part of a live radio and web broadcast. All the other shows were really well received and as a result the band expect to sell several dozen copies of their album This Sad Paradise in the US. The band will be posting some of their US tour snap shots on the Golden Rough homepage really soon, so surf by http://www.zipworld.com.au/~goldenr to check 'em out. This Sad Paradise is out now on Candle Records, also available in the USA through Parasol Records and just released in the UK through Hot Records.

Gippsland band P76, who feature ex-members of Oscarlima and Jericho, have just inked a Recording contract with the brand new Australian leg of USA based pop label Zip Records. Their forthcoming EP Sunliner will hopefully be released throughout Australia, New Zealand and The USA in February 2001.

Originally slated for a release earlier this year, The Orange Humble Band’s second album, Humblin’ Across America (Half A Cow Records), should be in the shops before the end of the year.

Half A Cow Records will also be re-releasing The Plunderers’ compilation album Banana Smoothie Honey. Originally released in 1992 on the Citadel label, Banana Smoothie Honey is a collection of all the 7 and 10 inches released by The Plunderers lineup of 1989-1992 and has been expanded to include a handful of songs the three-piece band released under other names (Hippy Dribble, Captain Denim) and one previously unreleased track - all highly produced by Rob Younger and The Plunderers. The nineteen songs have been split over two discs. The first disc contains all the A and B sides while the second disc has all The Plunderers' psychedelic epics all linked up into one sprawling suite as originally planned by the band - five tracks totalling 37 minutes!
