RAPE: Some Preventive Measures

[¤] RAPE is a violent crime -- an invasion and a frightening experience!

[Note: RAPE is almost a taboo subject in personal web site pesentations. POPS here attempts to provide information on how to possibly prevent it!]

[¤] RAPE affects ALL women, no matter what their age, race, or economic status.

There is NO absolute protection from RAPE, but there are precautions women must take to lessen the likelihood of being attacked!

[¤] If women increase their awareness of RAPE prevention tactics, they decrease the opportunity for rapist to committ this brutal offense. By "being aware", a woman can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of RAPE. This does not mean, however, that all RAPE's can be prevented, or when a RAPE occurs. It is NOT the victims fault .... RAPISTS COMMIT RAPE, NOT VICTIMS.!

PSYCHOLOGICAL PREPAREDNESS

[¤] #1 Accept the fact that you are a potential victim.

[¤] #2 Educate yourself concerning rape prevention tactics.

[¤] #3 Consider alternatives if confronted by a rapist.

[¤] #4 Become aware of locations and situations where RAPE might occur and avoid them.

IN YOUR HOME

[¤] #1 See that your home or apartment door is equipped with a door viewer and dead bolt lock.

[¤] #2 All windows should have secure frames and locks.

[¤] #3 All entrances and garages should be well lighted.

[¤] #4 Trim bushes and shrubbery so no one can hide in them.

[¤] #5 Never hide a key over the door frame or in a flower pot.

[¤] #6 If single, do not put your first name on the mailbox or in the telephone book. Use two initials and your last name.

[¤] #7 Do not admit strangers to your home! If an unexpected repairman calls, check his indentification and have it slipped under the door!

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

[¤] #1 Try to avoid isolated bus stops.

[¤] #2 Stand away from the curb until the bus arrives.

[¤] #3 If possible, sit behind the driver.

[¤] #4 If someone bothers you tell the driver.

[¤] #5 Stay alert when riding the bus.

HITCHHIKING: It is against the law. Law enforcement officials urge you not to hitch because of the high risk!

BABYSITTING

[¤] #1 Check with friends who have sat for people with whom you are not familiar.

[¤] #2 Leave their name, address, and phone number with your family and the time you are expected back.

[¤] #3 Once inside the house, lock all doors and windows.

[¤]#4 If you hear strange noises outside the house, call the police.

ON THE STREET

[¤] #1 Do not burden yourself with packages and a bulky purse.

[¤] #2 Dress sanely. Clogs and tight clothes hinder quick movement.

[¤] #3 Walk near the curb and away fro alleys and doorways.

[¤] #4 Do not give directons or other information to strange men.

IN YOUR CAR

[¤] #1 Always lock your car when entering and leaving it.

[¤] #2 Look in the back seat before getting in to see if anyone is hiding there, even if the door was locked.

[¤] #3 Have your keys in hand so you do not have to linger before entering your car.

[¤] #4 If you have car trouble, raise the hood, lock yourself in the car and wait for police. If a man stops and offers help, do not get out of the car. Ask him to call a service truck.

[¤] #5 Do not stop to offer help to a stranded motorist. Stop at the next phone booth and call the police or highway patrol.

[¤] #6 If you suspect that someone is following you, drive to the nearest public place such as a service station of all-night restaurant and blow your horn.
