Many Advertisements for show guppies are placed by individuals who have never competed in an International Fancy Guppy Association (IFGA) Sanctioned Show. They typically purchase some breeding stock and try to raise and sell them without knowledge or expertise to produce and maintain Show Guppies. As for the other Advertisements, I can tell who is a genuine breeder. Raising Show Guppies has been a hobby of mine for over 25 years and currently I am an IFGA Certified Judge. If there are color varieties that you are looking for and I don't have them, I can refer you to a reputable breeder who does have them for sale. This is part of my duties as IFGA Clearinghouse Chairman.

I am sure that you have seen in guppy books and tropical fish magazines about virgin females. Please disregard this because it is outdated somewhat. Typically I will send young fish 3-6 months old that are pre-bred, so that the young will soon be born in your tanks in one month or less and they will quickly acclimate to your water conditions. This is the key to getting your guppies started. Also instead of sending older fully caudaled males, I recommend younger males from prime stock that are active and will acclimate and tail out in your water, and will chase and mate with your females. These breeders will be young enough to enable backcrossing if you desire although this is not necessary at this time. My water conditions are hard(400ppm), alkaline (PH of 7.6) which is ideally suitable for my show fish.

I strongly recommend sterilized tanks (bare). All strains should be kept separate; Live newly hatched baby brine shrimp should be fed daily along with regular flake foods; Never feed worms of any kind (except bloodworms), they carry diseases; Do not mix with other guppies or tropical fish until the fry are accustomed to your raising conditions, and then do so at your own risk.

These strains represent decades of hard work by various breeders including myself and I'm sure that you will immediately notice the quality difference from commercial or pet store quality strains which are no match. All fish are guaranteed live delivery. You only pay for the reshipping.

Having read this, its up to you to improve or maintain whatever strains of guppies that you are planning to acquire. Keep in mind that your results may vary with selection of breeders, care, feeding, water conditions diseases and other factors. You can enjoy your guppies on many levels ranging from having and raising beautiful show guppies for your own personal satisfaction, to joining an IFGA club and showing your guppies in competition at IFGA Sanctioned shows. Finally you can sell your excess guppies at petstores or tropical fish wholesalers. It's a wonderful hobby and its your choice as to how you enjoy your show guppies.

I wish you all the enjoyment and success in the hobby.

THE FOLLOWING TRUE BREEDING SHOW QUALITY STRAINS CAN BE OBTAINED FROM DR FRANK CHANG
1997 IFGA GUPPYMAN OF THE YEAR :

CHANG RED ALBINOS

Exellent large bodied sturdy fish with deep red color in the finnage and most of the body which exhibits its best colors after 7 month of age. I've bred this strain for over 15 years in my fishroom and maintain over 30 TANKS OF RED ALBINOS. This line traces its lineage back to Reinholt Kleiss reds and Midge Hill Reds. It is a very hardy and prolific strain. These red albinos are constant show winners in both Breeder Male and Albino classes . They are in my opinion the best Red Albino strain available period in over 40 years. The late color is more intense and more red than most red strains.
Currently the color class champions.

· REDS (GOLDBODIED)

A very large body, dorsal and caudal with red color that extends through most of the body. A prolific and hardy strain which is genetically gold. This strain is the winningest line of guppies so far on the show bench. Also available is a gray bodied line which is related also with exellent deep red color; fertile.

HALF BLACK PASTEL(CREAM FINNAGE) Zielinski/Meir Line or Japanese Line

A striking strain that was developed in Germany and imported to the USA in the 1970's. Half Black Pastels are still popular in germany and now in Japan as well. An eye catching strain that has a clean pastel white dorsal and caudal with a good dark half black body. Body and caudal size ranges from large to very large. This strain is later maturing and long lived. An exellent strain to enjoy or show.

HALF BLACK YELLOWRankin Line

HALF BLACK BLUE

PASTEL,

A striking large bodied strain which is genetically blond. The caudal and dorsal color is a pastel white. An intriguing strain that was developed in the late 1980's by using gold bodied females from a half black pastel strain which took a number of years to perfect. Not for the beginner.

· PURPLE SNAKESKIN:

A large bodied and prolific strain that has a bicolor caudal and dorsal with a purple and yellow or purple and white pattern. A very robust and stocky fish which is highly recommended for the beginner to the advanced.

· BLUE SNAKESKIN:

A solid blue caudal with a patterned dorsal. This large bodied prolific strain typically reaches show size in ten months to twelve months of age. Blue snake skins have done well at IFGA shows. One line produces Blue Snakeskins . The other line produces some percentage of yellow variegated snakeskins with a cobra body pattern.

· HALF BLACK RED: Chang/Alderson Line

Show quality strain that has good red color in the caudal and dorsal with a half black body. Females are very large with a red patterned caudal. Half black reds were developed in the 1960's and trace their lineage to Germany. Very prolific.

The blue glass line which can be fully interbred but is distinctly separate in pattern, has a pastel blue finnage with the same pattern of black spots. The Japanese fish produce the only true Giessen longfins in the USA. Japanese guppies sell by the pair in Japan for up to $150-$300 (US) Dollars!
