Discovering a dinosaur

Finding dinosaur fossil can be difficult detective work. Some fossils were found at some unexpected places. Dinosaurs skeleton were found at the beaches, foot of cliffs, in hills, quarries and down mines. To find dinosaur fossils, firstly we must search for special sort of rocks, such as sandstone or mudstone that was 245 to 66 million years old. There were a few step before and after discovering dinosaur fossils. These are the steps.

1) WHERE TO SEARCH A NEW DISCOVERY
Fossil skeleton of dinosaurs are generally found in rocks that were being formed from mud and sand when dinosaurs were still alive. The dinosaurs fossils are buried deep down in the lowest part of the rock. Palaeontologists do not dig holes all over the place in hope of finding fossils. First they look for the right kind of rock. And then they let the rain and wind to ‘do’ their work for them . The best place to look for fossils are where the rock has been worn right down to its lower layer by the of the wind and rain or waves. Sometimes large parts of a hills or cliff crumble away to reveal part of a fossil.

2) FREEING THE GIANT
A whole team of expert is needed to dig the bones carefully out of the rock so that giant skeleton can be pieced together like a giant puzzle at the museum laboratory. Discovering complete dinosaur skeletons are very rare. Some of the place that where fossils are most frequently found are often dangerous. But fossils can also be found by accident. Everything we know about dinosaurs were what the expert had discovered through their ‘digs’. Follow these steps to find out how a dinosaurs is dug up.

BLAST OFF
Many tonnes of rock may have to be blown up, or bulldozed to reach the fossil. Only the top of rock are blasted away, otherwise the skeleton fossils may be damaged.
SLOW BUT SURE
Great care must be taken to dig out the fossil without damaging them. Hammers, chisels, and even dentist drills are used to chip away the rock that encases the bones.

BRUSHWORK
Soft brushes are used to clear away earth and stones because brushes do not damage the ancient bones. Crumbly bones can be painted with specials glues to harden them.

FOSSILS PHOTOS
The bones must be photographed in position before being moved, to show where the position they were found. Scientists can learn much about how the animal died and where it lived, from studying how it was lying , and by looking closely at the ground around it for it clues.

SEARCHING FOR CLUES
The surrounding rocks are searched for sign of the bones that might have broken away from the main skeleton or may be another fossils of dinosaurs will been discovered buried nearby.

PIECING TOGETHER THE JIGSAW
Every fossil piece must be numbered and recorded to help the scientists reconstruct the skeleton in the laboratory. It is very important work ,but it was also slow and very painstaking work.

HANDLE WITH CARE
After they were numbered and recorded, the bones will be taken out from ground. Once they are out of the ground, the bones are wrapped in tissue paper, then plaster-soaked bandages, or special foam jackets, that set hard to protect them on their journey to the laboratory.
