This section should be shared with the students, it enables them to begin to identify what they know about the situation. Encourage all students to evaluate what they know here, and to move beyond the easy reply sometimes uttered "I don't know anything!"

As you need to start someplace, do the following and don’t worry if you have little or no background in El Nino. After reading and absorbing the situation, list hypotheses, ideas, or hunches INDIVIDUALLY about the cause of the problem or ideas about how to approach the problem. You should list all that you can think of, as the investigation proceeds, they will be supported or refuted.
