The following companies (websites), provide a range of comprehensive health related information services.  Some provide on-line dictionaries, search engines and daily or weekly newsletters.  Almost all of these sites are free of charge to access and use.  The majority of the sites are unfortunately American.  This should be taken into consideration when seeking information related to generic and trade or proprietor medications.

Mental Health

This 100% Canadian site is the work of Dr. Philip Long, M.D. from British Columbia Canada.  This health information service provides a wealth of information related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.  There is a self-diagnosis system which can be used by professional and non-professionals alike.  This site is definitely relevant to the Canadian experience and is of interest to both the Registered Psychiatric Nurse and the psychiatric nursing student.  Actually, this site is so well done it is of interest to any person interested in learning more about mental health issues.  This site is a definite must see!  Highly Recommended.

Intelihealth

This worldwide health information service provides a variety of information for medical, nursing and allied health professionals.  It provides a large database of information and provides a daily newsletter to subscribers free of charge.  The newsletter is interesting in that a multitude of subjects are covered and more detailed information is provided through the use of links to other sites. 

Medscape

This worldwide health information service provides a variety of information for medical, nursing and allied health professionals.  It is in direct competition with Intelihealth.  It has a large database, easily accessed, from the School of Medicine at John Hopkins University.  It also provides a newsletter to subscribers free of charge.  This newsletter is weekly. 

Nursing Resources for the Healthcare Professional

This health information service provides an array of information.  Areas include online research with full text with reference citations, medical and nursing manuals and journals, an online bookstore, job search (mostly American) and a nursing chat lounge.  This site is a must see.  Highly recommended.

Cinahl

This worldwide service provides a large database of peer reviewed journal articles in full print.  Navigation of the site is difficult at best and is quite easy to get lost in the numerous commands that are required.  This service IS NOT FREE and can be expensive, unless you know specifically what you are looking for.  If you are a student at a college or university, enquire at your specific department to find out if you can access this service free of charge.  Many colleges and universities have contracts with this service, therefore, it is provided to many students free of charge.  It is well worth your time and effort.
