This is a new section about the weekly happenings
        around the LPD. It will depend entirely on news
        reports from the local papers and things that I hear
        from other fans or players.



*Scrimmages of Aug.11*  Sullivan Central at Appalachia 
 Dawgs look to defend their title by scrimmaging the AAA Cougars.
 I traveled to Appalachia to watch this contest. The Central Cougars
 came away with a 32-16 win. The Dawgs scored on their 1st possession
 & got the 2 pt PAT to take a 8-6 lead, but Central's fine QB Eric
 Bunn & his recievers proved too much for a Dawg defense that seemed 
 to lack speed. I was impressed with QB Brad Barnette who has some
 huge shoes to fill, but did a fine job completeing several passes..
 a couple of which were long. Big FB Josh Fleenor had a fine game 
 bulldozing his way for (my estimate) around 80 yards. Dawgs are 
 young & lack the speed of past teams, but they'll get better as the
 season goes along and could be poised for a long run by the time the
 VHSL playoffs start. I took a few pics which I'll try to post this 
 weekend on the Dawgs team page.

*Other news of today* 8/11/98
 There's an excellent article in the Bristol H-C today on Clintwood
 QB Brandon Greene and his teammates. 
 
 PV has a new player in Timmy Fredrich, a exchange student from 
 Germany. If his name sounds familier it's because his brother 
 Oliver was a key player on PV's 1995 state title team as a DE.
 Timmy is a 6'5 180 lb. WR who may be a big addition to an already
 powerful PV offense.


*Scrimmages of Aug.12*  JIB travels to Sullivan North
 JIB may be the main threat to Appalachia in Division 1
 I'll have a report on this as well.
*JIB showed tonight that they may be a contender in Div.1 as they*
 played North to a standoff before dropping a 14-12 decision. Reggie
 Sensabaugh & Quinn Smith were the main weapons in a bruising ground
 game. Sensabaugh had a TD & well over 100 yds as he ran over & 
 around the North defenders. Smith had a TD run and provided some 
 crushing blocks for Sensabaugh. QB Matt Ward played very well for a
 Soph. as he completed several passes & generally ran the offense 
 very well. WR Mike Snowden made a couple of big time catches as well. 
 The Raider line opened up some holes, but the defense was burned 
 several times by North's Jon Wilhelm as he threw for 1 TD & several
 completions. On a down note...a couple of Raiders recieved what 
 look to be serious injuries. I'm not sure who they were (these 
 games are hard to tell who's who at times), but one appears to be a
 collarbone & one a knee injury. This is something the Raiders can 
 ill afford.

*News of 8/14/98*
 According to a column in the Bristol paper, J.J.Kelly standout RB
 Nathan Stalnaker will miss the entire football season due to an 
 enlarged heart. They are currently mulling over medical options, 
 but the prognosis is good and Nate should be able to lead a normal 
 life. We all wish Nate the best and will keep him in our prayers.

*Scrimmages of Aug.14* 
 Castlewood travels to Clintwood
 Bobby Meade has the Greenwave's best team in 20 yr. ready to go.
 Richard Stallard of Wavehous files this report.
 Clintwood & Castlewood scrimmaged 1 1/2 hr. and the contest was 
 dominated by the Greenwave. The Wave had 400+ yds. of offense, led
 by BJ Davis and halfback Jason Mullins who had a couple of 60+ yd
 TD runs. Talk of the night centered around the Wave defense as they 
 held Castlewood to -rushing yards. Hit of the night was made by 
 Justin Hamilton who crushed a reciever coming across the middle.
 

 Appalachia at Richlands
 Brandon Fisher ofChunk's Dawg House was at
 the game and said that Appy lost by 8 scores to 0. However the Dawgs
 commited 7 turnovers (many inside their own 20) in monsoon like 
 conditions. The Dawg defense played well as did QB Brad Barnett.

*Scrimmages of Aug.15*
 J.J.Kelly will host a four way tilt with Pound, Twin Springs, and
 John Battle.

*News of 8/17/98*
 It's been confirmed that ex Lexington HS, PH-Roanoke, & Richlands
 head coach Dennis Vaught is teaching at J.J.Kelly this fall. Whether
 or not he returns to coaching remains to be seen.

*Scrimmages of Aug.17*
     Powell Valley traveled to Lebanon to scrimmage the Pioneers & 
 Patrick Henry. It was a scrimmage which each team got 10 offensive
 plays per possession, teams rotating out against each other.
 The evening was dominated by PV as the Vikings offensive units
 scored 9 TD's on 10 possessions. The only possession PV didn't
 score on was when the 2nd unit used up their allotment of downs
 inside the PH 10 yd. line. A slew of backs had big nights running
 the ball as Julius Jones, Matt McCoy, Victor Williams, Don Dorton,
 Josh Callahan, Derrick Clark, Jimmy Yonce, & Scott Williams all had
 big nights as they ran over and around defenders. QB's Jake Stepp
 and J.T.Wells also performed well throwing the ball. Making catches
 were McCoy (several) Mike Prewitt, John Williams (outstanding 
 grab on a deep ball), Justin McAfee (2 TD), Josh Warren, Aaron Moses,
 Travis Maddux, and Timmy Fredrich.
    As impressive as the offense was, the "Killer D" from last year
 appears to be on track agian. None of the PV defensive units gave
 up a score, but the starting unit crushed the offenses. Lebanon
 had the most success, with a 10 play 30 yd. drive that 15yds of
 which was via penalty. The PH starting offense mustered approx. 
 -40 yds on 30 plays. The front 4 of Chapman, Coughlin, Davis, and
 Warren manhandled the offensive line leaving the linebackers free
 to make plays all evening. I will have pics posted by midweek on
 the scrimmages of last week and tonight. I'll drop the film off
 tomorrow.

*News of 8/18/98*
 A pretty reliable source that can't be named (for obvious reasons)
 has told me that FB/LB Josh Fleenor and TE/DE Travis Golloway have
 left the team. If this holds, it's a blow to the Dawgs chances, but
 if there's anyone that can find a way to get others to step up it's 
 Tom Turner.

*News of 8/19/98*
 Chunk's Dawg House has some big news from Appalachia...
 Really big news out of the Dawg camp has the return on Mike Sullivan
 who was an outstanding RB/LB last year. The VHSL showed a little
 heart (for them anyway) in granting Mike another year of eligibility.
 He was previously deemed too old, but his birthday fell one day
 ahead of the Aug.1 deadline. This is a big boost for the Dawgs as
 Mike is an outstanding player. Thanks to Chunk for the info.

 Word out of the Appalachia camp has Ryan Mabe now in Golloway's
 spot at TE, and Adam Durham in the FB spot vacated by Fleenor.

*Scrimmages of note this coming Friday*
 The annual Gate City, PV, Coeburn, jamboree welcomes back an old
 participant in the Abingdon Falcons. Abingdon used to participate
 in this event, but dropped out to play elsewhere. This event is
 Friday evening starting at 5 (approx.)PM at Coeburn HS. I'll have
 a report late Friday or early Saturday.

 Clintwood will host a jamboree Friday night as well. The Pound
 Wildcats, Haysi Tigers, and Ervinton Rebels will be the other
 participants. We'll have a report on this event posted Saturday.

 J.J.Kelly will travel to Lebanon to scrimmage against the Pioneers
 and Twin Springs. Starting time is around 6. I hope to get a report
 on this one too.

 The Kingsport Times-News comes out with their preview this Friday.
 It comes complete with updated rosters, so I'll make the nessessary
 changes to the team pages...post the pics I have....maybe reformat
 the front page and set up an archive for this section. I'd also 
 like to add a page to preview the week of upcoming action. I'm 
 working 6 AM-8 PM all week (except Fri. of course) so I'll do what
 I can through the week.

*News of 8/21/98*
 Clintwood half back Brent Hobbs has left the team for personal 
 reasons.

*Scrimmage results from 8/21/98*
 Richard Stallard of Wavehous reports that the jamboree at Clintwood
 was dominated by the Greenwave. Clintwood opened up by pummeling 
 Ervinton 20-0. Wave pretty much had control from the start with the
 offense scoring at will. In other contests, the Pound Wildcats and
 new coach Rocky Baker got off to a good start, leading the Black
 Diamond District favorite Haysi with two minutes remaining before 
 falling 19-7 when Haysi put together two quick TD's. In the nightcap
 LPD arch rivals Pound & Clintwood squared off in a contest that was 
 won by Clintwood 28-7. Clintwood used long TD runs from Hamilton,
 Mullins, and Greene, plus a 90 TD pass from Dan linkous to Meldon
 Brockoff to show why they are a serious threat to win it all.

 At Coeburn, the Blue Knights opened things with Abingdon as the 
 Falcons won 21-7. Blue Knights were without tackle Kendall Ward
 who missed the contest due to a off field injury. Coeburn had a 
 difficult time running against a huge Abingdon line, but QB Brandon
 Hale was impressive completeing passes to Tim Clay and Eric Burke,
 before hitting Anthony Gray on a 43 yd TD pass.
 In the 2nd game Powell Valley took on Gate City. Two quick TD runs 
 by Julius Jones of 64 and 66 yds were all PV needed as they took a
 quick 14-0 lead. After the 6 min mark, Phil Robbins substituted
 liberally as the final score wound up at 14-0.
 Game 3 saw PV take on a fired up Abingdon squad that gave the Vikings
 more competition than Gate City. PV took to the air with scoring
 passes of 66 yds from Jake Stepp to Mike Prewitt and a 68 yd catch
 and run by Matt McCoy. The Killer D was in stride as usual. LB Keith
 Davis was all over hunting ball carriers, as were his teammtes. PV
 won the match 13-0.
 The nightcap saw Coeburn take on Gate City. The Blue Knight defense
 was primed and ready as they had battled to a 0-0 tie when I had to 
 leave with about 6 min remaining. Coeburn had a great goal line 
 stand as the held GC on downs from inside the 10.

 At Lebanon the J.J.Kelly Indians took on the Pioneers and Twin
 Springs. According to this report from Robbie Stinson the Indians
 may be set to win some games this year. Robbie's Report

 Chunk's Dawg House is reporting that Appy HB/LB Mike Sullivan won't
 be allowed to participate due to a decision by the school. Report

*News of 8/24/1998*
 I'm trying a new forum for the page. Try it  and see

 Chunk's Dawg House is reporting that Josh Fleenor returned to practice
 today and will suit up for Friday nights contest with Sullivan North.
 TE Travis Golloway may be back tomorrow as well. Dawgs will certainly 
 benifit from this as well as the fact that North RB Josh Ball has a 
 broken hand and will be fitted with a special cast to try to play.

*News of 8/25/98*
 Powell Valley's outstanding LB Keith Davis may miss 2-3 games with
 a leg injury that occured during Friday night's jamboree when 
 another player accidently rolled on it. His place in the lineup
 will be taken by either Derrick Clark or Mike Stidham.

*News of 8/28/98*

*News of 8/29/98*
 Well the 1st round of action is over. Maybe the biggest suprise was 
 the ease with which Pound handled Kelly in Rocky Baker's debut as 
 coach. Cats reportedly looked like a veteran team with the offense
 running smoothly. Could Pound contend for a playoff spot? Time will
 tell. As for Kelly, the Indians repeatedly shot themselves in the 
 foot with 6 turnovers. Kelly has some good, young talent but will
 need time to develop it. Coeburn is up next for Kelly, while Pound
 stands a good chance of moving to 2-0 as they travel to St. Paul.

 Clintwood's opener went pretty much as expected with the Wave 
 putting Twin Springs away early and coasting the rest of the way.
 Wavehous has a detailed report on the game.
 Clintwood will travel to old rival Haysi next week.

 Appalachia showed their youth in a loss to North. Dawgs played much
 better in the 2nd half against a Raider team that's 2-0 on the 
 year & will probably be a playoff team in TN.AAA. Jamar Clark had 
 a good night with 73 yds on 15 carries. Dawgs will host bitter rival
 Burton in a big LPD contest next week.

 J.I.Burton won a thriller with Haysi 34-28 in OT. Reggie Sensabaugh
 had a fine night rushing for 191 yds and 4 TD. Burton's pass defense
 was burned by Haysi, but Jon Salyers is a fine QB. JIB QB Matt Ward
 ran the offense well and tossed a 51 yd TD to John Hunter. Raiders
 will have to shore up the defense when they travel to Appalachia
 next week.

 Coeburn put St. Paul away early as expected en route to a 40-6
 win. Jason Nixon & Anthony Gray accounted for all of the Blue Knights
 scoring with 3 TD's apiece. Coeburn will open up LPD play next week
 by hosting Kelly.
 
 Powell Valley and Lee staged an epic battle in Ben Hur as PV ground
 out to a 21-3 lead, then held on as Lee rallied to make it 21-18. PV
 appeared ready to put the game away as they were at the Lee 20, but
 a holding call ended the drive and Lee refused to fold. PV was able
 to grind the clock out to end the game. Lee got lots of yardage on
 the Killer D, but the defense made the plays when they had to. Shea
 Chapman had a great game from his DT position. The road for PV
 doesn't get much easier next week as they travel up I-81 to Region
 C power Radford.
