Region D Tournament Action of 5/24/1999

At Honaker, Coeburn's bats came to life as they exploded to a 9-1 lead after 2 innings in a 17-6 rout of Castlewood. Anthony Gray led the charge with a 3-4 plate performance including a solo homer & double, Jason Nixon had 2 hits including a 3 run triple, David Long hit his 12th home run of the season, a 3 run shot in a 7 run 2nd, and Tim Clay added 3 hits as well as picking up the win on the mound. Coeburn will face BDD champ Haysi (13-6) on Wednesday at 2PM, while at 4PM Kelly will face Honaker, which disposed of St.Paul 6-2.

LPD Tournament Action of 5/20/1999

Defending champion J.J.Kelly showed it wasn't ready to give up it's stranglehold on the LPD by thumping Coeburn 11-0. Kelly's Marvin Graham broke open a scorless game in the 4th inning as he belted a three run homer. Then Kelly pulled away in the 5th by putting up 4 runs on hits from Chad Longworth, Graham, and a 2 RBI single by Brian Strength. Kelly again put up 4 runs in the 6th with the aid of 3 Coeburn errors to make it 11-0. Graham finished the day 3-4 with 5 RBI & Nate Stalnaker shut down the powerful Coeburn bats on a 4 hit shutout. The Indians receive a 1st round bye next week in the Region D tournament, while Coeburn will face Castlewood on Monday.

LPD Tournament Action of 5/19/1999

Defending champion Kelly had to climb out of the hole twice to beat Pound 9-8.Pound moved out to a 4-0 lead after the top half of the 2nd inning, only to see Kelly cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning. Then Pound went up 8-3 in the top of the 4th as Justin Boggs and Andrew Shortt hit back to back RBI singles. Kelly then raiiled with 1 run in the bottom of the 4th and a big 5 run bottom of the 6th for the win. Josh Spinella was 3-3 and had 4 RBI to lead the Indian attack. Josh Tompkins and Shortt had 2 RBI each for Pound.

In the other semifinal game Coeburn pounded Clintwood 12-2 behind the 2 hit pitching of Tim Clay, and home runs from Jason Nixon and David Long. Coeburn held a slight 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th, when the Blue Knights put up 6 runs after there were 2 outs. Coeburn had 4 hits in the inning, but Clintwood's 3 errors led to the big inning. Coeburn will face Kelly Thursday night for the LPD title.

LPD Tournament Action of 5/17/1999

The opening round of the LPD tournament got underway with Pound downing Burton 10-4 behind 6 innings of 1 hit pitching from Mike Robinson. Pound went up early as Josh Tompkins socked a 2 run double in the 1st inning. Zack Moore also hit a 2 run homer for the Cats, who are to face Kelly Wednesday evening at Powell Valley.

At Wise Kelly spotted Appalachia a 1 run lead after 1 inning before exploding for 21 unanswered runs as they routed the Dawgs 21-1. Brian Strength had 3 RBI and Josh Spinella & Marvin Graham each had 2 RBI to lead the Indians.

At Clintwood, Andy stallard went 3-4 at the plate & had 2 RBI, including the game winner as Clintwood edged Powell Valley 5-4. John Stanley hit a 2 run shot in the 4th to tie the score at 4. Brandon Green came on in relief & pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball for the win. The Greenwave will now take on Coeburn at Powell Valley on Wednesday.

Action of 5/13/1999

At Norton, Kelly grabbed a share of the LPD title by downing Burton 9-4.Wade Stanley had three double, a triple, and scored 3 runs to lead the way. Anthony Graham & Marvin Graham hit solo homers as well.

Action of 5/12/1999

At Pound, Andrew Shortt scattered 6 hits & fanned 10 as Pound claimed a share of the LPD title by downing Kelly 3-2. The win throws the LPD lead into a three way tie between Pound, Coeburn, & Kelly. Coeburn will be the #1 seed in next weeks LPD tournament.

At Ben Hur, Powell Valley dropped a 9-8 decision to Lee. Michael Prewitt led PV with 3 hits.

At Norton, Brad Stidham & Cain Reed each hit 3 run homers as Burton crushed Ervinton 23-3. A.W.Collins & Shane Roberson had 3 hits apiece for Burton as well.

Action of 5/11/1999

At Wise, Brandon Green tossed a 6 hit complete game as Clintwood stunned Kelly 6-1 to tighten the LPD race. Green was also 2-4 at the plate. Kelly now holds a 1 game lead, but must play at Pound tonight, where a Wildcat win would result in a three way tie between Kelly, Pound, & Coeburn.

At Pound, Andrew Shortt blasted a three run homer and drove in four runs as the Cats thumped Burton 17-5. Shane Roberson had 3 hits for the Raiders.

At Coeburn, the Blue Knight slammed 4 home runs including a grand slam by Josh Davis as they thumped Appalachia 13-4. Jason Nixon, Justin Nixon, and Eric Burke also homered for Coeburn.Matt Skeen had 3 hits & 2 RBI for Appy.

Action of 5/10/1999

At Coeburn, Powell Valley played spoiler as they upset Coeburn 11-7 to all but end the Blue Knight's chances for the LPD regular season title. Matt Coughlin homered, doubled, and had 3 RBI to lead the 11 hit Viking attack. Brian Chandler & Jake Stepp had two hits each & an RBI. Jason Adams picked up the win while Bobby Maiden got the save. Josh Davis was 4-4 at the plate along with 4 RBI and Jason Nixon was 4-4 also for Coeburn.

Action of 4/27/1999

At Clintwood, Brandon Green allowed just 1 run in 6 innings and drove in 2 runs as Clintwood topped Powell Valley 7-1. Andy Stallard went 2-3 with a solo homer & 2 RBI to help the cause. Victor Williams hit a solo shot for PV's only run.

Action of 4/22-23/1999

At Kingsport, the Kelly Indians split 2 games. In the 1st game the Indians lost to Tennessee's 3rd ranked AAA Dobyns-Bennett 9-4, before coming back to destroy Sullivan North 18-4 later in the evening.

At Clinchport, Coeburn made short work of Rye Cove by blanking the Eagles 16-0 in 5 innings. Justin Nixon & Josh McDavid combined to go 7-7 at the plate & drive in 10 runs.

At Pound, Mike Robinson pitched a complete game 4 hitter to carry Pound past Clintwood 6-3. Josh Mullins went 3-3 including a 2 run homer and Justin Boggs added a solo shot for the Cats.

At Rye Cove, Clintwood's Jeremy Stallard went 2-4 with 4 RBI to carry the Greenwave to a 8-6 win over Rye Cove.

At Appalachia, Derrick Smith went 4-5, including 2 home runs and 5 RBI as Powell valley pounded Appalachia 22-8. Matt Coughlin had 4 hits, Jake Stepp chipped in 3, & Brian Chandler added a home run as well for PV. Todd Scalf & Matt Skeen homered for the Dawgs.

Action of 4/20/1999

At Wise, the Kelly Indians edged Pound 2-0 behind Justin Morgan's 2 hitter. Morgan fanned 8 & only walked 1 in the complete game win. Kelly took a 1-0 lead in the 1st when Justin Wyatt scored on a Pound throwing error on an attempted double play. Kelly scored again in the 5th when Brandon Bates led off with a single. Pinch runner Chad Thomas advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, then to 3rd on a fielder's choice. He then scored on another Pound error. Andrew Short pitched well for Pound, allowing only 6 hits.

At Big Stone Gap, Coeburn's Jason Nixon, Ryan Lawson, and Anthony Gray each stroked 2 run homers to lead the Blue Knights to a 8-4 win over Powell Valley. The game was 2-2 entering the forth before Coeburn scored 4 runs to pull away. Brian Chandler hit a solo shot for the Vikings.

At Appalachia, the Burton Raiders got 4 hits & 3 RBI from Brad Stidham to top Appalachia 15-7. Josh Austin cranked a homer for the Raiders as well. Brad Barnett had 3 hits for the Dawgs and Chris Lane added two, but the Dawgs couldn't overcome an amazing 12 errors comitted.
