LPD NEWS & NOTES

This is a new section about the weekly happenings
around the LPD. It will depend entirely on news
reports from the local papers and things that I hear
        from other fans or players.

*News & Notes of 11/9/1998* In a season of few suprises, the job that Rocky Baker did at Pound in his 1st year was outstanding. Baker took a Wildcat team that wasn't expected to win more than a couple of games to a 5-5 record. Clintwood finally seemed to break out of a slump in their 41-0 rout of Pound. Look for the Wave to easily dispose of Haysi in the 1st round of playoff action. The Burton Raiders have had a week to rest and get ready for Twin Springs.... If the Raiders are focused the will be the team to beat in Region D.... Powell Valley is starting to get everyone healthy....bad news for the rest of the Region D teams....Jones showed little effect of his bruised knee by his 3 carry 93 yard night against Appalachia....DT Cory Davis is also back at full strength after missing 4 games with a broken bone in his foot... Appalachia was granted a reprieve when St. Paul took down Thomas Walker. If FB Josh Fleenor is able to go, the Dawgs will have to be reckoned with... *News & Notes of 11/17/1998* The Dawgs more than proved they belonged in the playoffs by dispatching the Cove by 17....the Josh Fleenor injury/attitude problem was resolved in time for him to smash the Eagles season... We now have the rivalry that's one of the most intense anywhere in Burton vs. Appy....The Raiders rode a superhuman effort by Reggie Sensabaugh who ran for 286 yards and blocked a punt to lead the Raiders past Twin Springs to set up the encounter with the Dawgs... West Virginia is reportedly very interested in Sensabaugh as are several other schools.....Reggie's brother Boo is a standout DB at WVU so the Mountaineers know more than a little about Reggie..... It's also reported that big Quinn Smith is drawing some interest from Division 1 schools as well as many 1AA schools... PV and Clintwood complete the all LPD regionals....not too many times have the BDD teams survived to make the finals, and never an all BDD..... Julius Jones has narrowed his choices (visits anyway) to UVA, UT, Michigan, UCLA, and Alabama.... The Viking-Wave contest will be just one of several times these two have met in the playoffs.... *News & Notes of 11/19/1998* Clintwood will be without WR/FS Jon Stanley who was ejected during the Haysi game & will have to sit out this week. PV's Derrick Clark (elbow) and longsnapper/punt returner Jimmy Yonce (hand) are ? marks this Saturday. *News & Notes of 11/26/1998* The VHSL has finally let us all in on where the finals will be played. The Division 1 finals are slated for Dec. 5th at Western Albamarle HS in Crozet, which is halfway between Waynesboro & Charlottesville. It was also the site of Powell Valley's 1st state title in 1982. The Division 2 finals will be Dec. 5th at Harrisonburg HS. I'm sure both schools have fine facilities, but it would've been nice if the VHSL could have staged the games where the folks from Wise Co. (provided both Burton & PV make it) could have watched both games. *News & Notes of 11/29/1998* It's championship week again & as usual, the LPD is right in the thick of it. Burton will take on Surry Co. at Westwern Albamarle HS in Crozet as the Raiders try to win their 2nd state title and Surry tries to finally get over the LPD hump, as the Cougars have dropped the last 2 title contests to the Dawgs. The Raider's Reggie Sensabaugh has been sensational in the playoffs by rushing for well over 600 yards. The Surry defense will have their hands full. Here's the story on Surry's win over Strasburg yesterday. Not far up the road, the Powell Valley Vikings are chasing their 2nd straight state title and will square off with Madison Co. at Harrisonburg HS. The Vikings avenged their last defeat by hammering Giles 40-0. Madison will look to avenge a 14-13 defeat by PV in the 1982 title game. Madison has a super offense with balence & it should be PV's biggest test of the year. *News & Notes of 12/03/1998* Here's a link to a good article in the Times-News about JIB vs Surry. Here's also a good article in the Times-News on PV vs Madison. *News & Notes of 12/14/1998* The LPD season went pretty much as expected with Powell Valley capping their 2nd straight Group A D2 title. The Clintwood Greenwave may have well been the 2nd best team in Group A as well. Once again showing the road to the state title goes through the LPD. Hats off to the Burton Raiders as well for bringing home a runnerup trophy in D1 too. Outstanding job by 1st year coach Jim Adams. The PV state title was the school's 8th which ranks 1st among Group A schools & gives the LPD an unprecedented 19 VHSL State Championships, to go along with 6 runnerup trophys. It don't get no better than that folks. Congratulations to PV's Julius Jones, Keith Davis, Luke Gilley, Brian Chandler, & Shea Chapman along with Burton's Reggie Sensabaugh who made the Group A All State team. Several other players from the LPD should've made it, but I suppose the rest of the state didn't see it that way. Next season should be a great one & later on this winter I'll give everyone a "football fix" by previewing the 1999 season. It's now basketball time in the LPD and for those of you out of state, you can keep up with the action on the LPD Hoops Report. I'll have the scores & schedules along with stats as they become available. Sometimes the papers here do a terrible job of reporting basketball, so I'll do the best I can. It looks like the Pound Wildcats possess enough talent to bring it all home this year. F-G Zack Moore is a very good prospect for NAIA or maybe even an OVC or Southern Conference school. Put him with a good PG in Adam Delforge & the inside tandem of 6'8 Slade Potter & 6'8 Jarrid Large & the Cats are tough to beat. It's a deep team too, with Josh Tompkins, Justin Boggs, & Shane Bray. *News & Notes of 12/19/1998* Good article in Kingsport Times about Powell Valley's football program. It's got some good points to the Viking's success. PV TE/DE Josh Warren has verbally committed to play football at Wake Forest. *News & Notes of 12/27/1998* Did anyone catch former Burton Raider Boo Sensabaugh blocking a Missouri punt in the Insight.com bowl? Boo's a great special teams player for WVU. Congrats to Zack Moore of Pound on his 1,000 career point vs. Coeburn a week ago. PV's Julius Jones visited UCLA last week & reportedly had a great visit. Appalachia has lost two football games for next year. Both Lebanon & Gate City have elected to end their series. However the Dawgs line up AAAA Daniel Boone of Jonesboro, TN. for one game and are still looking for another. Appy's loss was Clintwood's gain....the Wave picked up Gate City along with Richlands & Castlewood to replace Twin Springs, Honaker & Ervinton. Good games for the Wave, both on the field & the box office. *News & Notes of 12/30/1998* The Coal Classic continues at Appalachia. Good article here on it. Pound center Slade Potter has left the team.
