J.I. Burton 34 Appalachia 13

The Burton Raiders ended the Dawg's 7 year reign as Region D champs by rolling over Appy 34-13 before a huge crowd at Lawson-Fitchco. The Raiders were fired up from the start as they took the field donning black jerseys which hadn't been worn since a 1991 upset of Powell Valley. The Raiders got things started fast when QB Matt Ward hit Jon Hunter down the sidelines for an 80 yard TD pass on the game's first play. The PAT was missed & Burton had a quick 6-0 lead. The Dawgs then went 3 and out on their 1st possession and Burton went back to work. Reggie Sensabaugh capped a 8 play 63 yard drive when he hauled in a 18 yard pass from Ward for a TD to make it 12-0 with 3 minutes to go in the 1st quarter. After a couple of exchanges of possession, the Dawgs moved 72 yards in 8 plays but the drive ended on downs at the Burton 8 yard line. The Radiers used that defensive stop to set up a 92 yard 10 play drive that would virtually ice the game as Sensabaugh capped the drive bulling over from the 10 and then added a 2 point PAT on a run to make it 20-0 Burton at the half.

The second half saw the Dawgs get briefly back into it when Derek Surrett interception gave the Dawgs the ball at the Burton 30. With 3 minutes to go in the 3rd Josh Fleenor smashed in from 2 yards out to make it 20-7 as Chris Papst added the PAT. Burton wasn't going to be denied today though, and Sensabaugh took over as he rushed for 2 4th quarter TD of 6 and 23 yards to give the Raiders a 34-7 lead until the Dawgs Pat Herron scored the final TD of the afternoon to make it 34-13. Sensabaugh led the Burton attack with 149 yards on 17 carries and the Raider defense held Josh Fleenor in check 80 yards on 22 caries. With the win, Burton moves to 7-5 and will host Region C champion Covington next Saturday in Norton. With the loss, the Dawgs finish the year at 4-8, most likely the best 4-8 team in the state.

Powell Valley 27 Clintwood 14

The old saying goes that offense sells tickets & defense wins championships was never more true at Bullitt Park Saturday as Powell Valley claimed it's 5th straight Region D title by downing Clintwood 27-14 in a hard fought game. The Clintwood defense, after being burned for 49 points & over 400 yards in the first contest against PV played maybe their best game of the season as they used a wide tackle 6 to containthe Viking attack and keep them in check....but when you talk about defense, the PV Killer D is as good as it gets and the Vikings rode the defense as they held the Wave who had rushed for nearly 700 yards the last 2 games to 102 yards. The Vikings also intercepted 4 passes on the day to stop drives. Clintwood's Justin Hamilton got the scoring off to a fast start by taking the opening kickoff back 83 yards for the TD to put Clintwood on top 7-0 as Brandon Green added the PAT kick. The Wave had another golden opportunity moments later when a PV fumble put the Wave in business at the PV 36. Two plays later though PV's Mike Prewitt picked off a long Green pass in the end zone to end the threat. Early in the 2nd quarter PV QB Jake Stepp hit Matt McCoy with a 43 yard TD pass to tie it at 7-7 as JT Wells added the PAT. The PV defense was relentless and held the Wave in check and with 4:30 left in the quarter Julius Jones broke through from the 11 for a TD to make it 13-7 as the PAT was missed. PV took a 13-7 lead into the dressing room, but the Wave was still on their heels.

The 3rd quarter opened with PV unable to move the ball, but the Killer D kept the pressure on when LB Keith Davis picked off a pass and returned it to the Viking 20. Two plays later Jones broke several tackles on his way to a 17 yard TD to make it 20-7 as Wells added the PAT. Clintwood wasn't through yet though and QB Brandon Green hit Jeremy Fleming with a beautiful 45 yard strike down the sidelines to make it 20-14 heading into the 4th. PV began to wear the Wave down though, and Victor Williams iced the game on a 15 yard TD run to make the final 27-14. Clintwood got close once more, but Jake Stepp, who was inserted at the last moment for a shaken up Prewitt intercepted a pass at the 2 to end the drive. PV got 138 yards from Jones to go with his 2 TD's and Matt McCoy provided 66 yards rushing to go with 75 yards receiving. Josh Callahan, Mike Prewitt, Stepp, and Davis all had interceptions for the defense. BJ Davis had 51 yards rushing to lead the Wave. With the loss, Clintwood ends the season at 10-2 with their only 2 losses coming to the Vikings. With the win the Vikings have now won 26 in a row and stand at 12-0 on the year. Powell Valley will travel to Giles next week for the VHSL semifinals.
