Appalachia 7 J.I.Burton 6

The Appalachia Bulldogs used a 99 yd 2nd quarter scoring drive capped by Tyrell Hardison's 34 yd TD run & an unheard of (for the Dawgs anyway) PAT kick by German exchange student Chris Papst for a thrilling 7-6 win over J.I.Burton in front ogf a capacity crowd at Riggs Stadium. The drive started after a Burton fumble inside the Dawgs 1. It was just one of many mistakes on the night for the Raiders who had 86 yards worth of offense negated by holding & clipping calls. The Dawgs defense did a great job, bending, but not breaking & held Burton in check until the 9:50 mark of the 4th qtr when Reggie Sensabaugh plowed over from the 1. QB Matt Ward's pass on the PAT attempt was broken up. Hardison led the Dawgs with 104 yds on 13 carries, most of which came on the 99 yd drive. Sensabaugh led the Raiders with 134 yds on 28 carries. Papst, the new kicking star hit the right upright on a 30 yd attempt and had a 42 yd attempt blocked. No doubt he's a big addition to the Dawgs program. The win was a big boost for Appy as this gives them some needed momentum for next week's big game at Clintwood. Burton in the meantime will look to get back on track as they travel to arch-rival J.J. Kelly. For more on this game go to the Bristol paper. Coeburn 41 J.J. Kelly 15

At Carl McConnell Stadium in Coeburn the Blue Knights moved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the LPD as they easily dispatched the Kelly Indians 41-15. Coeburn built a 28-0 halftime lead on the strength of two Brandon Hale TD passes and two TD runs by Jason Nixon, then coasted the rest of the way. Hale tossed another TD pass to Ryan Lawson who grabbed his 2nd TD catch of the evening for the Blue Knights final score. Anthony Gray added another TD on a two yard run. The story for the young Indians was much like last week...turnover after turnover...4 lost fumbles and two interceptions never let the offense get untracked. Bobby Ramey had a 62 yard TD run and Robbie Stinson hauled in a 28 yard scoring pass from Tommy Asbury for Kelly. Next week the Blue Knights will travel to Pound with 1st place in the LPD on the line while Kelly will host arch-rival J.I. Burton. Pound 37 St. Paul 8

The Pound Wildcats traveled to St. Paul in search of their 2nd win in as many tries and came away with a 37-8 win over the Deacons. St. Paul shocked the Cats early as Daniel Davis scooted over from the 5 to give the Deacons an early 8-0 lead with a 2 point PAT. It didn't take long for Pound to recover as Brandon Hubbard bolted in from 35 yards out to make it an 8-6 game as Pound's 2 point PAT failed. Still in the 1st qtr Pound took the lead for good when Hubbard bulled over from the 1 & Adam Delforge added a 2 point PAT run to make it 14-8. The 2nd qtr was all Pound as QB Brandon Cantrell hit Delforge on a 58 yd TD pass and added two scoring runs of 5 & 1 yard to make it 35-8 at the half. The 2nd half was pretty much a standoff as Pound added a safety to make the final 37-8. The Wildcats will host Coeburn next Friday with 1st place in the LPD on the line. Powell Valley 41 Radford 13

The Powell Valley Vikings made the long trip up I-81 to Radford to take on the Bobcats and were lat in arriving as bus trouble delayed the start by almost 45 min. As far as Radford was concerned, PV could have stayed home as the Vikings rolled to a 41-13 win. Julius Jones and Matt McCoy each rushed for 2 TD as PV opened up a 28-0 lead midway in the 2nd quarter and never looked back, leading 35-6 at half as linebacker Mike Stidham scooped up a fumble and went 54 yds for a TD. Derrick Clark scored on a 7 yd TD run to cap off a good game and the PV scoring early in the 3rd as it was 41-6. The PV 2nd & 3rd team finished out the game as the 3rd qtr came to a close. Julius Jones had a great night rushing for 203 yds on 18 carries and 2 TD. The Killer D was in stride as the smothered a very quick Bobcat attack. PV will finally get to play a game at home next week as they host SWD favorite Richlands.
