Clintwood 35 Coeburn 26

Coeburn traveled to Clintwood last night, and as usuual the game was one of the more entertaining games in the area as the Waveheld off the Blue Knights 35-26. Coeburn struck first when Jason Nixon went into the end zone from 33 yds out to give Coeburn a 6-0 lead after the PAT failed. In the 2nd quarter the Wave began to take control as QB Brandon Green hit WR Brad Ramey with a 17 yd TD strike. Greens PAT kick gave Clintwood a 7-6 lead. A few minutes later super soph. TB Justin Hamilton scored on a 53 yd catch and run from Green to put the Wave up 14-6 at the half. Coeburn refused to wilt however and came back to start the 3rd with Jason Nixon bulling in from 5 yds out to get the Knights back in it at 14-12.The Wave came right back though as Jason Mullins showed why he's one of the LPD's top backs as he went over from the 9 to extend the Wave lead to 21-12. Moments later Mullins may have put the game out of reach as he raced in from 39 yds out to make it 27-12 as the PAT failed. Just before the end of this wild 3rd quarter Coeburn got back in it as Nixon rushed for his 3rd TD of the night, this one from 10 yds out to get the Blue Knights back to within 7 at 27-20 as QB Brandon Hale connected with Eric Burke on a 2 point PAT. In the 4th quarter Hamilton put the Wave out in front by 15 as he raced in from 44 yds out to make it 35-20 as Mullins ran in on a 2 point PAT. Coeburn fought back with Josh Hill running in from the 16 to make it 35-26 as the PAT failed. A gritty stand by the Knight defense had Clintwood punting with about 3 minutes to go, but the Knights were unable to mount a threat and the game ended with the Wave on top 35-26. Coeburn falls to 1-2 in the LPD and 3-2 overall and will host Burton in a very important game for their playoff hopes next week. Justin Nixon was outstanding in defeat as he rushed for 150 yds on 28 carries to go with 3 TD against a great Wave defense. Clintwood moves to 2-0 in the LPD and to 5-0 overall and will host Powell Valley in what should be the game of the year in the LPD. TB Justin Hamilton was outstanding as usual with 176 yds on 13 carries and catching a TD pass. Jason Mullins added 73 yds on 9 carries to go with his 2 big TD's. Powell Valley 47 J.I. Burton 0

The Viking ship sailed into Norton last night to take on the Burton Raiders and early on found the seas a bit rough as Burton fought PV on even terms most of the 1st half. In the 1st quarter the Raiders stopped a PV drive at the 10 and took over on downs. The Killer D forced a Raider put but were guilty of holding before the return giving the Raiders a 1st down. From there the Raiders put on an impressive drive that ate up 9:27 minutes on the clock, but came up empty as it stalled at the PV 25. That was as close as the Raiders would get. After the teams traded turnovers PV QB Jake Stepp hit TE Josh Warren with a 15 yd pass on 4th and 12 to keep a drive alive. From there Julius Jones spun out of a couple of tackles as he went in from the 15 to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead with J.T. Wells PAT kick. Moments later Jones was at it again as he capped a 41 yd drive aided by 2 pass interference calls by going in from 13 yds to put PV up 13-0 at the half. When the 3rd quarter started it didn't take long for PV to put it out of reach as Jones blazed in from 52 yds to make it 20-0 and after the Killer D held Jones added to his total as he raced in from the 49 to push the score to 27-0. Following a diving interception by Mike Prewitt the Vikings added another as Matt McCoy took a pass in the flat and ran in from 34 yds out to make it 34-0 after the 3rd quarter. In the 4th PV got a TD of 7 yds from Josh Callahan and another TD of 7 yds from Scott Williams to make it a final of 47-0. Jones finished the night with 177 yds on 13 carries and 4 TD and Stepp was 7-11 passing for 111 yds and 1 TD, but the story for PV was the Killer D as they held Reggie Sensabaugh to 40 yds on 21 carries and completely shut down the Raiders attack until the offense woke up. Burton falls to 1-2 in the LPD and 3-2 overall and will travel to Coeburn in a big contest next week while PV will travel to Clintwood to face the unbeaten Wave in a game that should determine the LPD regular season title. Appalachia 35 J.J. Kelly 14

The Appalachia Bulldogs began their quest for a playoff spot after a grueling schedule by traveling to Wise to take on the Kelly Indians who were coming off a big 14-6 win over Virginia High last week. The Dawg offense had been struggling in recent games but with the return to fullback of Josh Fleenor things are shaping up nicely as rushed for 3 TD as the Dawgs downed Kelly 35-14. Fleenor got things off to a good start for Appy as he bulled in from the 1 for a 7-0 lead with Chris Papst's PAT kick. Kelly answered right back when Nathan Halls scooted in from 23 yds out to tie the game at 7-7 with Ross Clisso's PAT kick. Still in the 1st quarter the Dawgs regained the lead for good when Fleenor went in from the 9 to make it a 14-7 game. The Dawgs put the game away in the 2nd quarter when Fleenor scored again from the 7 to make it a 21-7 game. The Dawgs added another TD before halftime by an undetermined source by the newspaper accounts to make it 28-7 at the half. Kelly was able to draw within 14 at 28-14 when Hallscored again on a 2 yd run. The Dawgs put up the last TD of the evening when QB Brad Barnette hit Jeremy Sullivan on a 20 yd TD pass. With the win the Dawgs move to 1-2 in the LPD and 2-3 overall and will host Pound in an important LPD game for both next week while Kelly falls to 0-4 in the LPD and 1-4 overall and will host Abingdon next week. Hurley 20 Pound 6

The Pound Wildcats were looking to recover from last week's beating by Powell Valley by hosting the Hurley Rebels but instead had their woes added to as Hurley beat the Cats 20-6, dealing a serious blow to Pound's playoff chances. Rebel RB Denny Dillow put Hurley up first as he dashed in from the 41 to make it 8-0 with a 2 point PAT in the 1st quarter. Pound got back in the game in the 2nd when Adam Delforge hauled in a 25 yd pass from Brandon Cantrell to make it a 8-6 game at the half. Hurley put the game away in the 3rd as Aaron Justice bulled in from a yard out and Don Griffey went in from the 12 to make it the final of 20-6. The Pound offense which had been so effective in the 1st three games until last week was once again throttled as the Rebels held the Cats to 22 yds rushing on 18 attempts. Pound falls to 3-2 overall and remains 2-1 in the LPD and will travel to Appalachia next to take on an improving Dawg squad in a game that's very important in terms of playoff hopes.
