Powell Valley 49 Clintwood 20 The Viking ship sailed into Clintwood Friday for a battle of LPD unbeatens and in front of a SRO crowd at Ralph Cummins Stadium the Vikings showed why they were the favorites to win yet another state title by thumping the Greenwave 49-20. After a spectacular parachute in by some skydivers the game began. The Greenwave took the opening kickoff and on their 2nd play from scrimmage the tone was set for the night as Viking DE Josh Warren blindsided QB Brandon Green causing a fumble which Warren scooped up and took into the end zone to put the Vikings up 7-0 with J.T. Wells PAT. Clintwood was able to rebound a couple of minutes later when they recovered a PV fumble at the Viking 43. From there Green's pass attempt hit a PV defender in the helmet and an alert Dan Salyer picked it out of the air and took it to the PV 5. From there Wave TB Justin Hamilton took it in on what was amazingly his longest run of the night. Green's PAT tied it at 7-7. PV then answered with a 10 play drive that ended with Julius Jones going in from the 11 to put the Vikings out in front for good at 14-7 as Wells added the PAT. On the next series PV standout LB Keith Davis was ejected after two personal foul penalties, but the Vikings forced a Clintwood fumble and once again Jones made it payoff by going in from the 14 to put PV up 21-7 with the PAT. Clintwood got a glimmer of hope when PV's Matt McCoy muffed a punt he shouldn't have even tried to field and put the Wave in business at the PV 25. After a spectacular catch by Brad Ramey on a 4th and 15 the Wave went to the air again with Green hitting Justin Hamilton on a 8 yard TD. Green's PAT made it 21-14 with 3:22 left in the half. That was plenty of time for the Vikings to score as they took only 4 plays before Matt McCoy took a counter play 18 yards for a TD to make it 28-14 with the PAT. Clintwood tried to rebound and with 1:34 remaining PV's Josh Callahan picked off a long Green pass at the PV 26 before steppin out of bounds. From there Jones drove the final nail in the coffin as he stepped through one of the many huge holes his line created and turned on the jets for a 74 yard TD run and put the Vikings up 35-14 at the break with the PAT.
The second half was more of the same PV drove down only to have Stepp's pass to Warren picked off by Hamilton at the 1 yard line. Two plays later though the Killer D got the ball back on a fumble and Josh Callahan took it in from there to make it 42-14 with the PAT. The rest of the game consisted mostly of PV driving the ball on the ground in a Dawglike fashion with Victor Williams, Derrick Clark and Callahan taking chunks of 4 and 5 yards at a time. PV's final score came when Clark bulldozed his way in from the 4 to make it 49-14 with the PAT. Clintwood added a TD with about 6 minutes left when Green hit Hamilton once more with a 10 yard TD pass to make it 49-20 as the PAT failed. That would be the last time the Wave would see the ball as Clark and Callahan ground out the remaining time before the Vikings just let the clock run out deep in Wave territory. For the night the Vikings rushed for 437 yards and Jones led the way with 286 yards and 3 TD's while Williams had 50 and Clark had 41. The Killer D was spectacular and except for the play where the bounced the defender's helmet for a big play and the punt muff that gave the Wave the ball deep, the defense shut down everything. Justin Hamilton came into the contest averaging 12 yds per carry was held to 23 yds on 14 carries and as a whole the Wave only had 62 yards rushing. Clintwood should rebound nicely next week as they travel to Ervinton while PV has the week off. You can be sure that the Wave will have another shot at PV in the playoffs as the two will likely meet again. Coeburn 34 J.I.Burton 30 The Coeburn Blue Knights rallied from a 22-0 1st quarter deficet to defeat Burton in an important game LPD game. Burton got off to a fast start as Reggie Sensabaugh went in from 12 yards out for an 8-0 Raider lead as Sam Keys ran in a 2 point PAT. Moments later Keys added to the score as he darted in from the 17 and Sensabaugh added a 2 point PAT to make it 16-0. Still in the 1st quarter Jack Kennedy hauled in a 55 yard TD pass from Matt Ward, but the PAT failed and the Raiders looked on their way to a rout but the Blue Knights had other plans. Coeburn was able to gather itself and Jason Nixon cut into the lead as he rumbled in from the 26 to make it 22-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the 2nd quarter the Blue Knights pulled closer when QB Brandon Hale hit Nixon on a 24 yard TD pass and Eric Burke with a two point PAT to cut the lead to 22-14 at the break. Coeburn took control inthe 3rd when Nixon scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards to make it 26-22 Coeburn heading into the final quarter. Coeburn then exrended the lead when Hale hit Anthony Gray with a 7 yard TD pass that put them up 34-22 with a 2 point PAT. The Raiders refused to fold though and battled back when Ward hooked up with WR Jazz Coleman on a 75 yard TD pass and Sensabaugh added a 2 point PAT to cut it to 34-30. The Raiders got the ball back one last time but were held on downs. The loss drops the Raiders to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in LPD play but they're still in good shape for a playoff berth in Division 1. The win was a big one for Coeburn who moves to 2-2 in the LPD and 4-2 overall. The Blue Knights are in a battle with Honaker for a spot in the Division 2 playoffs and need every win they can get.

Appalachia 28 Pound 7 The Appalachia Bulldogs appear ready to make their stretch run for a playoff spot as they won their 2nd game in a row as they blasted Pound 28-7. For the Wildcats it was their 3rd loss in a row after a promising 3-0 start and severly damaged thier playoff hopes. The Dawg offense has been a different machine with the return of Josh Fleenor to the FB position. In this game Fleenor rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries and 1 TD, but his presence helped QB Brad Barnette buy time to complete 9 of 10 passes for 167 yards and 3 TD. The Dawgs scored on their opening posession as Fleenor bulled over from the 1 to cap a 72 yard drive to put Appy up 7-0 with Papst PAT. Next time the Dawgs got the ball Barnette hit Jeremy Sullivan with a 54 yard TD pass to make it 14-0 at the break. On their 1st possesion of the 3rd quarter the Dawgs put it away when Barnett hit Derek Surrett with a 37 yard TD pass to make it 21-0. Still in the 3rd Barnette hit Fleenor with a 13 yard TD pass to make it 28-0 Dawgs heading into the final quarter. In the 4th Pound managed to get on the board when Brandon Hubbard crashed over from the 1. Pound falls to 2-2 inthe LPD and 3-3 overall but their playoff hopes are dwindling as they'll be chasing Honaker and Coeburn for the last playoff slot. For the Dawgs, they move to 2-1 inthe LPD and 3-3 overall and seem to be rounding into shape at just the right time. Pound has the week off and the Dawgs will travel to Lebanon.

Abingdon 24 J.J.Kelly 0 The Kelly Indians dropped 24-0 decision to Abingdon to fall to 1-5 overall. The Indians offense was totally shut down by the Falcons as Kelly only managed 73 total yards of offense. Abingdon got a 25 yard FG from Eric Lathemand a 3 yard TD run from Martin Lucas to take a 9-0 lead after one quarter. The Falcons added to their lead in the 2nd half when Anthony Summit went in from the 1 and later hit Leeson with a 3 yard TD pass to round out the scoring. Kelly will travel to Honaker next week.
