Gate City 33 Appalachia 9

The Appalachia Bulldogs hosted Gate City in a non district game as the Dawgs tried to rebound from last weeks loss at Lebanon. The Dawg offense struggled once again as they could only muster 142 yards on the ground and had a backbreaking clipping penalty that negated a 70 yard TD run by Josh Fleenor that would have tied the game. Gate City broke on top early when Nick Colobro scored from the 5 to cap a short 37 yard scoring drive to make it 7-0 with the PAT. The Dawgs came right back on a 52 yard drive but failed to punch it in and Chris Papst booted a 35 yard FG to make cut it to a 7-3 Blue Devil lead. The big play on that drive was the 70 yard TD run by Fleenor that was called back for clipping. In the 2nd quarter Gate City struck again when Colobro went over from 12 yards to make it 13-3 at the half. The Blue Devils then took the opening kick of the 2nd half and ground out a 6 minute scoring drive that Jeremy Keller capped from a yard out to give the Blue Devils a comfortable 19-3 lead. The Dawgs climbed back into it near the end of the 3rd quarter when Fleenor bulled over from the 15 to cap a 66 yard drive with 1:48 to go to make it 19-9 as the try for two failed on the PAT.

The Dawgs would get no closer though as the 4th quarter was all Gate City. The Blue Devils took advantage of a muffed punt deep in Appy territory to put it away as Colobro scored from the 4 to make it 26-9. The Blue Devils added another TD late when Derrick France scored from the 3 to make the final 33-9. In spite of the loss the Dawgs remain in pretty good shape points wise in the playoff hunt as they hold on to the final spot over Whitewood. Appy will travel to Coeburn next week in an important LPD game while Gate City will stay in the LPD as they travel to Powell Valley.

J. I. Burton 39 St. Paul 6

The Burton Raiders got back on the winning track as they bombed St. Paul in a non district game at Norton. Reggie Sensabaugh got the Raiders off to a good start by bulling over from the 2 to give Burton an early 6-0 lead as the PAT failed. Still in the 1st quarter QB Matt Ward tossed a 5 yard TD pass to Mike Sowden who made a great juggling catch to make it 13-0 as Ward added the PAT kick. Burton salted the game in the 2nd quarter by scoring 3 time as Quinn Smith smashed in twice.....once from the 4 and another from the 2. Sensabaugh capped the half as he went over from the 2 to make it 33-0 at the half. Sam Keys raced in from 69 yards out in the 3rd quarter to make it 39-0 and the Raider subs finished out the game giving up only a late St. Paul TD by Daniel Davis to make it the final of 39-6. The win breaks a 3 game slide by Burton as they will host Pound in an LPD contest next week. Sam Keys led the Raiders tonight with 172 yards on 9 carries and Sensabaugh added 111 yards on 11 carries and 2 TD.

Powell Valley 55 J.J.Kelly 0

Powell Valley showed little rust from their week off as they struck early and often as the Vikings tuned up for the stretch run by defeating the Kelly Indians on homecoming night 55-0. Julius Jones scored from 50 yards out on PV's first play from scrimmage as he raced untouched into the end zone. Matt McCoy took a bad snap on the PAT and dashed in to give PV an early 8-0 lead. On PV's next possession Jones raced in from 36 yards out to give PV a 15-0 lead with Wells PAT. QB Jake Stepp gave PV a 22-0 lead still in the 1st quarter as he sneaked over from the 1. The Vikings made it a 36-0 game at the half as Stepp hit McCoy with a 18 yard TD and Josh Callahan went in from the 5 to end the half. In the 3rd quarter Jones carried once for a 46 yard TD to make it 43-0. Derrick Clark scored from the 1 to make it 49-0 as the PAT was missed and Jones closed out the scoring when he fielded a punt at his own 39 and somehow managed to elude about 7 Indians who were within 5 yards of him on his way to a 61 yard TD to make it a final of 55-0. Jones led the Vikings with 208 yards on only 7 carries and Josh Callahan added 82 yards on 10 carries as PV improved to 7-0 on the year. Next week the Vikings will host Gate City while the Indians fall to 1-7 and will host Clintwood next
